No. 3 Syracuse Orange (20-1) vs. Cincinnati Bearcats (15-5) GameThread
Syracuse Orange at Cincinnati Bearcats, Jan 23, 2012 7:00 PM EST
Fresh off its first loss of the season, the Syracuse Orange will look to avoid a losing streak as they head to Fifth Third Arena for a Big East battle with the dangerous Cincinnati Bearcats.
This will be just the ninth meeting between the Orange and Bearcats. Syracuse holds an 6-2 edge in the series after winning the last three encounters. The Orange handled Cincinnati in last year's contest with a 67-52 decision in a game played at the Carrier Dome.
Head coach Jim Boeheim saw his team's 20-game win streak snapped as it was handed a 67-58 loss by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday. The Orange had their worst offensive performance of the year in the loss as they set new season lows in points (58), field goal percentage (34.0), and assists (13). Syracuse is still leading the Big East in scoring offense with an average of 78.9 ppg on 48 percent shooting from the field and 35.4 percent shooting from three-point range. The Orange's defense that allowed Notre Dame to make 50 percent of its field goals to score 67 points, is now allowing opponents to score an average of 60.7 ppg.
Syracuse will be without its rebounding and shot-blocking center Fab Melo for the second straight game as he attends to academic issues. Although he does not score an overwhelming amount of points, Melo's inside presence was missed against Notre Dame on both ends of the floor. Kris Joseph and Dion Waiters will need to step up with Melo out. Joseph is the team's leading scorer with an average of 13.6 ppg, but he will need to do better than 4-of-12 from the field to score 12 points, as he did against the Irish. Waiters scored in double-figures for the ninth-straight game against Notre Dame, but also shot a poor percentage to do so. The Orange's 7-1 record in the Big East has them in sole possession of first place, but another defeat would give them the same total of losses as five another teams in the league.
Cincinnati comes in with a 15-5 overall record after its 77-74 overtime loss to West Virginia on Saturday. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and gave the Bearcats a 5-2 league record, their best start in Big East play yet. Head coach Mark Cronin has won three in a row and six of his last eight against ranked opponents with Cincinnati. Although the Bearcats have the worst field-goal percentage (39.3) in league play, they will attack the Orange's patented 2-3 zone from deep as they have made the second-most three- pointers (57) in Big East action.
With Melo out, Yancy Gates should be a big contributor for the Bearcats. Gates is averaging 12.2 ppg and a team-best 9.4 rpg. The senior forward has recorded double-doubles in each of his last two outings. Sean Kilpatrick is Cincy's top scorer with an average of 16.0 ppg and comes in having scored in double- figures in all but two contests this season. Dion Dixon is the team's second leading scorer with an average of 13.9 ppg, while Cashmere Wright is chipping in 10.8 ppg and a team-high 4.8 apg.

Stop the presses
Hubert Davis said something that actuallty made sense. He said KJ needs to get to the line 8-9 times a game. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Anyhow, familial obligations kept me from watching before 3 minutes or so left in the 1st half, so I can’t say much. The Orange are up, though, so I’ll take it.

I don't want him trying to get to the line that much
Because if he does he’ll try to dribble into it, and we’ve all seen how that story ends.

If he tries to dribble it yeah.
But if he gets it like he did with the dunk, 1 on 1 on the wing, he’ll do well.
Absolutely
but he hasn’t been doing that this season, kids gone soft the last two years.

True
But Hubert’s hypothetical was spot on. KJ needs to catch a step outside the lane, one or two dribbles and finish.

Way to stay strong, team
On the road, winning ugly works. No worries about how it looks, so long as it works.
We absolutely do not have a go-to guy. Four different guys had a chance to give us the lead and bricked. and, as far as I am concerned, JS should be prohibited from shooting 3’s unless we are up by 10 pts and in the Dome. He is just the opposite of clutch. Kind of like A-Rod. He’ll put up the numbers, but don’t expect it when you really need it.
Great first half by Christmas, I thought. Really used his body. A couple nice rebounds too.
Fair has to stop swatting at the ball on rejections. He is winding up and following through.
Triche is our best rebounder. Everyone else seems to have trouble catching the ball.
Good defense overall though. We seemed to have a lot more in the tank than Saturday.

One thing I forgot
Anyone else notice that the team has not been passing nearly as well lately. What was once a selfless team is starting to have more of a selfish feel. I guess it’s easier to be selfless when you are up 20.
Waiters, in particular, has seemingly abandoned passing. All this NBA talk must be hitting home. Nothing will help his stock like a deep tournament run.

I feel like they never show any other Big12 teams
They have one ranked ahead of us now
Just sayin
True
but other than Kansas who else is a continual basketball power in the b12?
Random thought
But for a powerhouse basketball school like Syracuse we get really disrespected. How in the HELL is OSU ahead of Syracuse in the rankings and have lost 3 games. I would love an explanation

One loss suddenly makes you worse than other one loss teams when you were better than them for six weeks?
We need to be careful at the start of the half.

For Michigan football tickets
They print physical tickets. You can get a stamp on them so that an ID is not necessary which means you can sell them to anyone. (Although I don’t get the impression that Michigan students sell a lot of tickets to opposing fans.) I’m guessing that’s what’s going on at these schools. Much harder to get an opposing fan into the student section at SU. Have to be a student who is a traitor or know someone well enough to get their ID.

So
Guess we need Fab back. Even if we win tonight, it does not look like the same team.
Looks like the Tenn. women were overratted.

In all seriousness
Someone needs to give him accolades for not fouling out yet, too.
If you're going to be stupid, you're going to have to be tough

Has CJ seen playing time this half? Very unusual.

"I have no idea, give me a call"
This is the 2nd game in a row these morons can’t figure out an easy call.
Was that really a tough call?
If the ball went that direction, there’s only one guy it could’ve gone off…simple physics
How sorry is cincys offense?
Live by the three….

Even with the win here I dont think Fab is to blame
Its been the offense thats really killed us. Look at the score. They have 48 points

Yes and No
we’ve proven we can do the job on D without him, which is pretty cool. But I feel like on the offensive end you gotta body up on Fab more than Christmas, and DEFINITELY more than Keita, so our forwards and guards have been seeing more pressure.
If you're going to be stupid, you're going to have to be tough
Julie is at the game
the Cincinnati radio announcers just mentioned Juli is there and about 20 years younger than Jim?!

We never had a safe lead in that Pitt game.
So far, there is no evidence that the formula has ever failed.

Solid win
Very pleased with Rak’s contributions and Southerland’s rebounding. Not to mention, Scoop had a good game and KrisJo didn’t miss a 2pt shot. Those FT’s at the end scared the crap out of me.
proud of him he stepped up when we needed him

From Dana's Rapid Reaction
There’s never a single star with Syracuse, which is sort of the beauty of the Orange.
Go Cuse!
Ugh
So Kris’s 17 pts (8-11 FG), 6 reb, 2blk don’t count as being a star tonight?
We've been wining about people demanding a Go-To Guy.
And now you want to complain when someone essentially says, we don’t need a Go-To Guy.
Go Cuse!
by nymetsfan1226 on Jan 23, 2012 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
Haha, I know
I think I misinterpreted it actually. Reading it again, I think (hope) she was implying that there are multiple stars, as opposed to implying that there are a number of very good players and no stars.
Rak
Rakeem grew some hair on his chest tonight. I know the rotation in the forward position is tougher for a freshmen than the center, but if Rak can translate atleast his aggressiveness and controlled play he will start to be a big factor.
So we lost a game, that was going to happen. Dick Vitale is an idiot. But I think we gained a lot more from this than a 1 in the L column. Rak really stepped up and we may be starting to see what we saw from Fab at the end of last year, which could translate to big things for Rak at when we need him down the stretch as the season continues.
Great win. Go Orange. On to WV.
Cuse fan in ACC country.
Well said
Boeheim must have chewed Christmas and Southerland out for their rebounding effort last game. Being tall doesn’t make you a great rebounder. It’s desire. If Christmas builds on tonight’s effort, Fab’s absence will be mitigated a bit
I was afraid Dion Waiters was going to dwell on this game
But with the 50 cent tweet I think he’s probably already forgot about about the game.
I’ve always said that 50 cent comes through for this team when we need him.
he needed that benching
and a long break b4 the next game to think and dwell on the benching
CBS's goodman tweeted that Dion had a huge smile on his face
when Scoop hit that big 3. It’s one smile but that’s a pretty good sign.

Yeah his tweet was "Great win tonight fellas good way to bounce back.. I didn't play good but my teammates was there to have my back."

And he just followed it up with a RT
of someone’s twit pic of their Syracuse socks and hairy legs. HAHAHA

Good to see he can react that way
Tom Brady did the same thing yesterday. Being able to admit that is what the greats are made of.
Solid win...
Now, if we get good news regarding melo tomorrow I will be ecstatic!!!
yeah really
I missed seeing Fab do Fab things.
What do you think Calipari would have done in that situation though?
There wouldnt have been an academic situation
You think his players REALLY go to class or do ACTUAL work? John Wall bragged about taking a bowling class his freshman year.
Better yet
Why aren’t SU players taking UK correspondence classes. Syracuse is apparently among the last schools who make athletes go to class. Need to stop that nonsense.
