Syracuse Basketball: Fab Melo Doesn't Travel, Mookie Jones No Longer On Team

Update 4: Mookie takes to Facebook to say "I'm sorry to all of my fans but family is the most important thing right now much love to everyone"

Update 3: The Juice Online actually saw this coming last week when word began to trickle out that Melo was academically-ineligible.

Update 2: Mookie tweets "Ill be back next year." That only makes this seem stranger...

Update: According to Andy Katz, Fab's issue is an "unresolved academic issue from first semester."

According to the source, the school is hoping the matter can be cleared up next week. The Orange host West Virginia Jan. 28.

Original: Well, we've been hearing the rumors all morning and here it is.

Fab Melo did not travel with the team and will not play in the game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish today. He also will not play when the Orange take on the Cincinnati Bearcats on Monday.

Further, Mookie Jones has left the team for "personal reasons."

For the Syracuse Orange fan who's always waiting for the other shoe to drop, there it is.

Here's the official statement:

"The Athletics Department's Communications Office is releasing two separate and unrelated matters regarding the men's basketball team:

-Sophomore Fab Melo is not with the team for the current road trip, which includes games against Notre Dame (tonight) and against Cincinnati (Jan.23).

-Junior Mookie Jones has left Syracuse University for personal reasons, and currently is not a member of the team.

Given University policy and federal student privacy laws, we are not able to provide any further details at this time."

As we find out more, I'll update...

well crap

I think ND is still a win. cincy will be tougher without Fab. Fair will need to play more. might be a wash with Fair’s scoring but not blocking shots like Fab.

Knew things were going too smooth

If Melo is out the semester, good bye dream season. Further, this could be a problem if he doesn’t get his grades up because that has the long term effect under NCAA rules.

by orangetundra on Jan 21, 2012 1:43 PM EST reply actions

It's always something

We are totally screwed long term now. Keita cannot play substantial minutes and neither can Christmas. With Fab, this team is not a contender.

ND and Cinci are still winnable

ND, because they aren’t great, and Cinci because they use a small lineup any way. But long term, with no Fab… agreed.

Gates is going to eat the interior alive, unfortunately

JB needs to get this team to adapt. Guards need to be even more active up top and the wings need to pinch better than they have.

My initial thought tii

The Irish have no interior presence to speak of, but Yancy Gates is a man inside for Cincy. It’ll be a long night without Fab in there.

How the eff can you be ruled academically inelegible as a scholarship athlete...

None of these guys are bio chem majors. I am sure they have every piece of material for EVERY CLASS on the SU campus, with mandatory study halls and mandatory tutoring, you really have to be a real moron to be ruled academically ineligible.

Hopefully Fab is back after this road trip.

And hopefully everything is ok with Mookie. There have been a lot of ups and downs for him at Cuse. If nothing else, at least he went out on a high note by putting up 10 in his last game.

I think the Mookie deal is permanent

It says he is not longer a member of the team. That is a significant statement.

Not necessarily true

I’m living proof that the people who write the grades can pretty much do whatever they want and make it official.

Case #1. When I was at SU, I skipped class more often than not. After missing the majority of a class, I was going to fail but the prof. let me take an incomplete instead, and retake the class. Perhaps the same is happening with Fab.

Case #2. At the beginning of my senior year, I needed 4 liberal arts credits to graduate. After failing Japanese and Spanish in consecutive semesters (again, skipping class) I didn’t have those credits. I assumed I wasn’t going to graduate, but a couple months later I got a diploma in the mail. Apparently the registrar’s office decided that since I was way over the number of credits needed to complete my major, I could graduate even though I didn’t have the requisite liberal arts credits, because I had enough total credits.

Point is, just because there’s something on Fab’s transcript now that makes him ineligible, doesn’t mean it’s something that can’t be rectified in a week.

And the athletic department, GRob, mike worked out a deal with the Prof and Academic dept for him to be given an Inc and take the class again so he would be eligible to play.

What are the odds Rakeem starts at center and they slide CJ in to start along side Kris. Then you’ll get Rakeem and Baye splitting time, with CJ playing a few minutes at center if need be.

Melo is being held out due to an unresolved academic issue from the first semester, according to a source.

This weekend’s games against Notre Dame and Cincinnati are the first games of Syracuse’s semester, which started Tuesday.

Melo played against Pitt Monday, before the second semester began. Melo set a career-high with 10 rebounds. He also had 10 points.

According to the source, the school is hoping the matter can be cleared up next week. The Orange host West Virginia Jan. 28.

Baye

Sure, he’s been shaky the last 2-3 games, but he played 20 minutes (his most all season) against Marquette and put up 4pts, 5reb, 2blocks and 3 fouls. That is fine (at least tonight). Last year against UConn he played 27 min had 4pts, 11reb, 6stl, 2blk.

I’m obviously just cherry picking here, but Baye could step up. It’s not like the team is putting someone completely untested and unaccustomed to getting minutes into the starting lineup.

by DMF on Jan 21, 2012 2:10 PM EST reply actions

It's not stats

It’s him getting overpowered in the paint and allowing easy buckets, rebounds and putbacks. Fab also alters more shots, in addition to those he blocks. Keita has been fouling a lot more, it seems, this season….

And why we shouldn’t be ready to throw the towel in just yet, but Fab is a difference maker and by far our best big. That makes sense

Hypothetical:

Fab is going to fail a class. Instead, he works it out that he can get an incomplete for the 1st semester. If he completes “X” work over the break, he gets a passing grade. I mention in a comment before that some professors are willing to do that kind of of thing, and not just for the starting center on the #1 ranking basketball team in the country.

apparently if your replying on the iPad and someone posts while your writing, your post doesn’t actually go as a reply anymore, but instead gets thrown as a general comment

This is a big test. Something was going to test this team this year

This was a little larger than we’d like or expect, but let’s see how the team rallies.

Hopefully it’s worked out next week and this gives us practice of a big man foul situation.

Yes

this team’s focus and resolve has yet to be tested this season…hmmm…

haha

not saying that

I was meaning on the court.

Injuries, suspension, etc.

by desoto86 on Jan 21, 2012 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

like most teams lose players to injuries

UNC has two players out, OSU had Sullinger out several games, Ryan Boatwright, etc.

by desoto86 on Jan 21, 2012 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

I would think if this is something that would land him out for the rest of the season

It would’ve said that, and not that it’s something “they hope to resolve this week”. And, yeah, I can’t figure out for the life of me how this is just coming out now when we’ve had our grades for weeks.

I’m still not worried about ND. Even with Fab I’ve been nervous about that Cincy game. They’ve been playing damn good ball on the road against G’Town and UConn. Now the #1 team comes into their gym….that place is going to be rocking.

Paterno was known

For Ignoring Indiscretions by his players, and wouldn’t let the university punish them. Instead he would swat them with a newspaper and say bad boy.

yep

Enjoying this Mizz-Baylor game right now, and still feel pretty damn good about the match-up tonight.

by Orange&P on Jan 21, 2012 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Not stressing.

It sucks we’ll be without Fab tonight and possibly Monday. But I didn’t think this team would go undefeated, anyway. If we beat ND tonight, I’ll be OK. Monday was gonna be tough with or without Melo.

Agreed

A first loss is coming at some point. Losing at ND would be bad with or without Fab, I don’t think they’re that good. But would anyone lose any sleep over the first loss coming at Cincy the way they’ve played? I wouldn’t. If we beat ND and we find out Fab is coming back this week, I’ll be very, very pleased. A win Monday would be an added bonus.

by cuse2012 on Jan 21, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

even with Fab...

I was thinking that Cincy might be the first loss. They’re playing like a team on fire.

by KS Racing on Jan 21, 2012 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

This is where the Seniors step up

Many a time in sports, a team rallies around a lost player (injury or otherwise) to win games nobody thought they could. Dion, if you think you are NBA ready, here is your stage in South Bend and Cincy.

by orangetundra on Jan 21, 2012 2:34 PM EST reply actions

There is no guarantee he is back

Unless I’m missing something, there is a significant chance this “issue” lingers for the remainder of the season. Also, it’s a huge deal on the court because they now only have two big guys, one of whom has barely played in the middle and hasn’t played more than 10 minutes in any meaningful game. Not good things

We're about to find out how deep our team really is today

Hope baye brought his good hands today

i think we should run

and run and run and run until ND goes 12 deep from pure exhaustion. TOs and fast breaks and press, we have the bench to do it. We score 70 against ND, we win.

My take

This sucks. But the final goal is winning a title. Not going undefeated. As long as Fab comes back sometime with in the next few weeks it will be ok. We are still better then every team we play I think we can get by with out him until the Gtown Uconn Lville stretch.

by Collin B on Jan 21, 2012 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Agree

But, I’m a bit worried. Unresolved 1st semester issues carrying over to the 2nd can’t be good. Sounds like he had to appeal something and it either hasn’t been decided or disapproved. If the latter, he may have another level of appeal. But, if Fab is gone, so is that dream of playing in April. This is a great team, but defensively Fab Melo’s presence alone is what makes them dominant. Fab makes guys change their shot before they even touch the ball. Let’s hope for the best, because they have overcome so much bad crap they deserve an honest run through the tourney.

by orangetundra on Jan 21, 2012 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

okay so fab is out

that leaves us dion, kris, cj, scoop, rak, baye, brandon, and j south to get things done. so stop crying, we are spoiled to be fans of such a talented team.

My style is impetuous. My defense is impregnable.

by 361Orange on Jan 21, 2012 3:04 PM EST reply actions

I agree

But theres no denying center is the one spot we have the least depth. Or at least talented depth. If Scoop KJ or Dion had to miss 2 games it might be better then Fab missing it actually. Because I trust CJ Triche South and MCW to step it up more then I do Xmas and Baye

by Collin B on Jan 21, 2012 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

Someone at Syracuse.com

Said a class was given an invalid final and they all have to retake it. This affected 4 athletes including Melo.

by boriscleto on Jan 21, 2012 3:19 PM EST reply actions

I hope that's true

And if it is, it’s complete BS that he would have to miss games for it. Which is why I don’t really believe that. Well that plus it being said on syracuse.com.

by cuse2012 on Jan 21, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

I'm hearing the same.

Let’s also not forget that our head coach is in the Hall of Fame and has seen a fair amount (no pun intended) of adversity during his tenure and am confident he will get the most out of what he has.

by Jesse James Helinger on Jan 21, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting if that's the word

It is a little odd that they’re saying they need to “clear up an academic issue” instead of saying something like him being “academically ineligible”.

by cuse2012 on Jan 21, 2012 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

The wording is the reason....

I feel o.k. about it. If there is a chance to have the issue resolved by end of week, than I believe J.B. is going to make sure it is resolved as soon as possible.

by Jesse James Helinger on Jan 21, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

I've had this happen before

Granted, it was a different school. What happened in my case was that they printed an answer key and stapled it to the final. Obviously, it was voided. There were 3 options, retake in a week, retake after the start of the next semester, or average your previous tests and use that as a final. That’s what I did since it didn’t change my grade.

If that’s all it is, it’s not a big deal for Fab so long as he passes.

by actioncuse on Jan 21, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Haha wtf

How do you staple the answer key to the final?

by cuse2012 on Jan 21, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

I have no idea

All 300 tests had an answer key. At what point does someone at the printing office say “WTF? Why am I stapling the answer to these tests?”

by actioncuse on Jan 21, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'm blaming this on Nike.

I agree it sucks that Melo may be out for who knows how long...

but can we stop crapping on BMK and Rak? I know no one is saying they’re terrible, but let’s get behind them and provide some encouragement, maybe? We should be grateful we have 2 very talented reserves to step in and split Melo’s role. So we might have to go smaller? Since when has that been a BAD thing with Syracuse? They might just have to collectively focus on rebounding. Frankly, they should be doing that anyways.

Melo is 6th in the country in Block Percentage

It’s not crapping on Baye or Rak to say that’s hard to make up.

UK trolls over at ESPN are demanding we forfeit our wins.

Of course I want to take everything someone from UK says with a grain of salt (probably more like a shaker of salt) but is anyone else afraid of this?

by adselver15 on Jan 21, 2012 3:30 PM EST reply actions

Did any one watch that game?

Was there some home cooking there? 27 fouls to 18, 25 free throws to 40?

by Mike I. on Jan 21, 2012 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

I watched G'Town/RU

Rutgers is going to be a tough game. Good defense, just make the game incredibly ugly. Kind of reminds me of playing against Butler back in the 2010 tourney. G’Town scored like 30 of their 52 points on the free throw line, too. Rutgers was given 7(?) free throws, and the physicality was no different on both ends. I don’t think there’s any team that gets half as screwed over in Big East basketball as Rutgers does. This, that debacle at MSG by Burr and Higgins, etc. Even that game they played here last year, though a lot of that was their own strategy to foul us.

This just in

Fab wrote all the answers to his finals in Brazilian. The answers couldn’t be accepted because Brazilian is only a language to Fab.

Either that or Chipotle is involved.

by cuse03 on Jan 21, 2012 4:54 PM EST reply actions

I'm shocked

at how many of you are taking this so hard. Even for cynical northerners it’s a little ridiculous. Some of you are acting like we just lost our season. Even if Melo is out a few games who cares? Last time I checked a number 1 ranking is completely irrelevant and we’re up two games on everybody else in the Big East. Not to mention regular season games meaning much less than Big East Tourney and NCAA Tourney games. I hate to say it but this kind of ‘woe is me’ crap is what makes us look bad. Stop complaining. It could be way worse

by W.A.Wilson on Jan 21, 2012 5:34 PM EST reply actions

We are one week into the 2nd semester.

That is five weeks after the first semester grades are closed and in. If this has been allowed to go on for five weeks without consequences than I’ll be damned. If that’s the case the University deserves to look like crap. There’s no freakin’ way

by W.A.Wilson on Jan 21, 2012 5:38 PM EST reply actions

I agree with most

Who are saying that if this were a situation where Fab definitely would be ineligible for the rest of the year, the statement would have said so. I don’t know the NCAA or SU rules regarding academic eligibility, but guys (from all over, not just SU guys) get held out over questions about academics all the time. If his eligibility isn’t rock solid, you hold him out. It’s the smart thing to do.

It may not be that he’s academically ineligible. As of right now, it’s more likely that there’s a question if he is or no. So, instead of risking having to forfeit wins due to an ineligible player, they’re holding him out as a precaution. So let’s not panic and see what happens.
