Hmm, been a few years since I was 13...
But, you can’t convince me that if you only went to 1 Syracuse game your whole life, you wouldn’t remember what freaking city it is in. So, you tell them this story, then relay it to a friend who does a 15 second google to realize that they didn’t play in Hartford that year. But wait, they played Pitt. I’ve never been to either city (except the Pitt airport), but I’m guessing they don’t look much alike.
So, a few months ago (Nov 2011) this phone call happened. He throws UConn because they are champs & a good SU rival. But when that doesn’t work, he throws out another rivalry, like Pitt, because that’s what he remembered—a big rival. But, in 2002, Syracuse v Pitt wasn’t that big of a deal. Sure they were always good, but it wouldn’t be for a few more years that Jamie Dixon really created the Pitt monster & SU fans looked forward to those games. Honestly, I don’t remember Pitt being that big of a game way back then. Tough for sure, but nothing to classify it as a rivalry.
Yeah, after a half-court buzzer beater
To avenge an earlier loss and that was after the 2002 season that started their Pitt surge. I’m not saying it wasn’t a big game, but in Jan 2002 Pitt was no different than Seton Hall, Providence or Rutgers. Back then, it was Georgetown, Nova, BC and UConn. Jamie Dixon didn’t even become head coach for a few more years. Pitt was good in 2002, but they hadn’t been good long enough to be a “rival” for SU. I mean, if you said in 2002, I went to a game against a huge rival, Pitt would not come to mind in your first few guesses.
That is the point. In 2011, PItt is a huge game. So, if you were to start guessing rivalries you would definitely say Pitt. But, in 2002 that just was not the case. So, when UConn fell through, he went to the next best guess, Pitt.

I think the '03 Pitt court rush was due to us beating the soon to be #1 team in the country
Pitt was #2 at the time, and the #1 team had lost earlier in the week.
The court rush preceded, then followed, then followed again, a Pitt half court buzzer beater that was ultimately waved off because it came after 0.0
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-tip
