This Day in 'Cuse History - January 19th
It's that time again! I figured it would be a great start to the day to kick Pitt while they're down. Does that sound like a good idea?
I though so, now let's get in the time machine and head back to January 19th, 2000. SU would travel to unranked Pitt on this day as the No. 6 team in the country and improve their record to 15-0 with an 82-72 victory over the Panthers.
A trio of SU seniors led the way on this night. Jason Hart had 12 points and 11 assists. The poetic Etan Thomas scored 17 points, grabbed 10 boards, and of course blocked 4 shots. Ryan Blackwell added 10 points. DeShaun Williams poured in 23 in the winning effort. I thought Williams would have been a mainstay but it didn't work out for him at the Cuse. Same could be said of Tony Bland (remember him?)as he finished with 6 points and 1 assist.
There were 6,645 fans at Pitt on this night to witness this game. Yep, I'm serious, under 7k for hoops. We couldn't even imagine that!

Tony Bland!
Fantastic Pull. Forgot about that guy.
This was back when
Pitt sucked at hoops. They took off about a year or two later, so the attendance doesn’t really surprise me
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
The Peterson Center
Only holds like 12K max. Still, under 7K is a poor showing for a top 10 team in your conference. Was Pitt bad that year?

The Pete
Wasn’t built at that point. I think 6k was a sellout at their old place.
My one memory on Tony...
…id a game in an early season tournament in Hawaii when he was a freshman – he had a great game, and I was pretty psyched.
This space for rent
I just know
that he had a lot of steals while he was here. 60 of them to be exact, or about 1 per game. Not too bad for a reserve.

Tony Bland blazed the trail for Fab and Rak to get pulled 2 minutes into the game
He was the original honorary starter
Remember Michael Brown from the early 80's?
He wouldn’t make it 2 minutes.
