The "Wave"
I know there has been a lot of talk about the wave and many think it should have been retired along with most of our mullets,,,,,,, but! I am curious if anyone else noticed that when the wave got rolling around the Dome during the SU beat down of Providence that the SU Football Coaches and recruits got into it? It looked as if Coach Hackett was the ring leader of the group as he definitely was doing his part to get the recruits and coaches into it. And much to my surprise the recruits honestly looked liked they loved it! One person in their group was video recording it as it went around and he seemed to be honestly enjoying himself and his first Dome wave experience. So I ask, if we get any of these recruits to commit this weekend should we credit the wave and it's retro awesomeness? Let the great debate begin!

I think there just need to be some Wave guidelines
Last night was an appropriate use of the wave. It was:
- early in the second half…
- during a media timeout…
- in a game the Cuse had under control.
The Marquette Wave was questionable since it was during a short time out and in a close game. In a close game against a good team, people should be standing up to scream and cheer on defense—not do the Wave. I’ve been giving the Wave the Daria volleyball treatment – passively raise one hand as it comes by and keep watching the game.

It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

Daria reference gets a rec from me
I loved that show. I occasionally watch reruns of it on Logo.
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-tip
Agreed
Anyone over the age of, I dunno, 10 or 12, probably finds the wave annoying. Anyone who is not yet a teenager probably finds it fun and exciting. So that being said, I’d have to agree with the proposed wave guidelines. Especially since kids find it enjoyable and there are always lots of people in the “next generation” of fandom who attend games.
I’d only modify one proposed guideline. Instead of early in the 2nd half, I’d maybe wait until the 2nd or 3rd media timeout (normally around 10 minutes left in half) of a game that is not only in control but is a blowout. Anything closer than 15 points and the wave is off the table.
I guess I’m in the minority, but I really have no problem with the wave if its done at an appropriate time. When that time is, however, is always hard to define. (NOTE: I was at a Sabres game earlier this season when fans started the wave when Buffalo was up 2-1 in the 3rd period. Buffalo lost the game. Too close of a game to do a wave in my opinion, and I did not participate. There are times to do it, and there are times to not do it. Its like the political definition of pornography…you know it when you see it.)
Yeah I'd be OK with late in the second if it's a blowout
I think that’s (historically) the reason that the band/cheerleaders do the Flag Run thing during Can’t Turn You Loose during the under-4:00 timeout. They always put the Otto surfing graphic up during that time.
It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

Hackett started the wave.
I think that’s just another reason he needs to go.

I was at the "Rally to Restore Sanity" a few years ago.
The hosts of Mythbusters warmed up the crowd. They wanted to set a world record for largest Wave. I took it upon myself to demand that no one participate in this obsolete, preposterous crowd stunt.
As long as they dont rush the court
Every week that we stay #1 should be another year down the road until our next rush is permitted.
ABSOLUTELY!
How many court rushes occurred a decade ago when the Cuse simple beat teams ranked higher in the polls? Also, for what its worth, sometimes its almost like the security staff begged for a court rush by all of a sudden appearing in front of the stands to guard against a rush. It was as if they were saying “we dare you to rush the court.” Rushing the court should be for when Cuse is ranked in the 20s/unranked and beats a top-3 opponent…top-5 maybe if that team is a rival.
Some of the court rushes are ridiculous
in fact, most probably are. There was one time we beat West Virginia probably 5-7 years ago and the students rushed and it was awful. At risk of sounding like a real blue-blood here: We’re Syracuse. We’re supposed to beat West Virginia. That’s not one to get excited over, no matter how our season’s going or what they’re ranked.
The (probably superfluous) one I did enjoy was Georgetown a few years ago though – just a pure “eff you” to Georgetown and its fans. Rushing against Georgetown is OK.
Also, and I think this is one of Bill Simmons’ “rules” – if it’s spontaneous, it’s OK. (Like, if we get another Pearl-esque buzzer beater against a good team.)
I was at the Pitt game in 2003 and that was stupid.
It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

"I was at the Pitt game in 2003 and that was stupid."
So was I, and it’s one of my greatest ’Cuse memories.
"If I ain't gonna be part of the greatest, I gotta be the greatest myself." Busta Rhymes
That game's one of mine, too
and if I were a student at the time I probably would have been out on the court myself… up in the 300s with my dad, I was in high school then. Jeremy McNeil’s free throws remain the least-probable Cuse moment of my lifetime this side of “kickout to Roberts for the win!” against Rutgers a few years later.
But looking back, on principle, by the third court rush, it wasn’t really spontaneous ecstatic emotion anymore but just proving a point / doing it because why the eff not, which I don’t personally think is really worth doing… but it was certainly memorable and it’s not like it’s been a chronic problem for us.
It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.
