For us, for the most part, we don't think we're talked about enough as a No. 1. People are saying we don't deserve it, that we shouldn't be No. 1. They want to see the Kentuckys, North Carolinas, Ohio States at No. 1. Syracuse, tradition-wise, is the same as those teams. We try to keep ourselves motivated knowing that we don't get talked about enough. We'll go out there and prove everyone wrong who says we don't deserve that No. 1 spot.
Scoop Jardine, in a fantastic interview with USA Today. Go read it to hear Scoop's thoughts on returning to Philly, the Bernie Fine saga and his role with the team.

Scoop Jardine -- SB Nation New York Reaction Piece
Linked below is my reaction piece to the interview. Jardine naysayers should stay away.

First Question
Let’s start out by talking about Wednesday’s game at Villanova. Obviously, there was a lot of talk about your guys’ first real road test. What was that like?
Really?

I just don't get it
How can they continue to ask these questions and make these comments? It’s just so idiotic.

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
I was really hoping Scoop was going to say something about that.
Alas.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
next question
How do you feel about that fact that you only have a 6-man rotation?
Can we stop calling him scoopid now?
So many teams would kill for a humble, smart, and SKILLED player such as we have. I mean, seriously. Everyone is so quick to get down on him. He’s such a good guy, on and off the court!

I think we all love Scoop off the court
He’s an awesome leader and (at times) can be brilliant on the court as well. He definitely still has his bad moments and I think the fans have a right to criticize his play.
Awesome interview though. I really love that they’ve taken all the negative media attention about being #1 and Bernie Fine and used it as a motivater.
His diet
Still has a bad rep off the court. Needs to Chipot-lay off.

I don't think so.
Fans criticize him but he single-handedly won at least 4 games last year. He had the most assists in the Big East! He led the damn league! In the midst of all that, he earns the nickname SCOOPID? Terrible, spoiled-brat, crabby fan mentality. I hate it, I’m sorry. We could be stuck with a teamate puncher or a selfish jerkoff. We have it pretty good with Scoop.

He led the Big East in turnovers as well, didn't he?
Yes, Scoop is a good player. He’s the starting PG for the #1 team in the nation. I’m not denying that, but he has awful moments during games that you’d expect out of freshman, not redshirt junior/seniors. There were games he single handidly won for us last year and games we lost because of his play. How many times did he bring the ball across half court and settle for a pull up three at the top of the arc without passing once and with 25+ seconds on the clock? At least once per game?
I love Scoop as a leader and I love him on this team because if he’s playing poorly, we have the depth to put him on the bench unlike last year. I would NEVER boo him, but I think he’s fairly earned the nickname scoopid at times.
I completely agree
I’ve always been a Scoop defender, but I also recognize he has bad moments and bad games. That said, the dude has been here five years, worked his butt off to get better and be a leader, and has had a lot of big moments. The term “Scoopid” has always just seemed disrespectful to Scoop and all the work he’s put in.

My sentiment exactly.
I like the idea of nicknames, but he is one of our leaders! It should be something nice for him! Something that shows our appreciation! Not a pun that insinuates he’s stupid. HE GOES TO SU, REMEMBER?!

I like Scoop
But Jade Scorpian & Scoopid are like Jekyll & Hyde. They’re the same person. You can’t have the one without the other.
I’m not sure about humble, but he’s a D1 Athlete on the #1 Basketball team in the country. You don’t get there by being humble. He seems quick to remind people that he’s the leader of this team and how important he is. Maybe its just me.
I've been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower. But you make more money as a leader.
He didn't start when he got here.
He had to work for it. He has earned the right to call himself the leader, I think. That’s just me haha

I’m with ya on this one. He’s definitely a good player. You have to take a few bad decisions with all the good ones he makes. Yes, he’s worth at least 1 head scratching decision per game, but for the most part he helps us waaaay more than he hurts us.
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

He still does some
pretty scoopid things on the court.
And I’m sorry, I don’t trust him with the game on the line. Try to. Can’t.

To think we could still have Flynn
Flynn chucking up selfish shots, dribbling with his head down, penetrating too deep only to dribble the ball off his knee or foot, refusing to close out on shooters on D. Things could have been sooooo much better.
I am being sarcastic of course
Simply to illustrate that every player has their warts. We put up with – heck many equated him with Sherm – Flynn’s selfish play at times, with his average assist to turnover ratio, with his lazy D ( despite all the athletic gifts that would have made him a lock down defender), with his over penetration, etc. because the end he gave us 39 minutes a game when we lacked depth, and he gave us a lot of points when we needed production.
People ignored the Flynn warts but with Scoop all they want to do is focus on the warts.
For the most part
That was a great interview. If Scoop doesn’t have a career in basketball ahead of him, he’ll do great in front of a camera. But he needs to lay off that one verbal tic.
You don't think Scoop will cash some pro checks somewhere?
Heck, Gmac made $200,000- $300,000 in just a couple years barely playing overseas. Not a bad way to start off in your early 20’s.
My guess is that Scoop bounces around overseas or in the D League for a few years and then goes the coaching route. I think his career will be basketball.
I saw Scoop
at the Camillus Walmart a few years ago. I tried to play it cool as he walked past with some of his family members. After about 15 feet he turned around and gave me a big smile that said yes its me and I know you were eyeballing me. Gotta love Scoop.

I love Syracuse basketball more than most things in life...
but I’m sorry, we are not “the same” tradition-wise as UNC and UK. There’s just no way you can justify that comment.
We may not have as many titles as those schools
but Syracuse is fifth all-time in D1 men’s basketball wins, trailing only KU, UK, Duke and UNC. And we’re sixth in all-time winning percentage, trailing those four schools plus UCLA.
You didn’t mention them, but Scoop did, and FYI Ohio State is wayyy down the list: 37th in wins, 236th in win percentage.

oops
OSU is 36th in win percentage. Not 236th.
