I know I said I wasn't gonna touch Gottlieb, but when you #TrollHard like this, it deserves some notice.

No, we are not a mad fan base

We’re an angry, angry fan base!
/Nobody will get this reference :(
As for my opinion on this, umm, haters goin’ hate?
Twitter: RyanMcD29
sigh
Every time someone defends DG for being “knowledgeable”, I remind them it’s no excuse for being a jerk.
It's Not a Popular Opinion
Gottlieb does make a valid point about the fans. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily alcohol-fueled (although it likely plays a part).
His tweets are an example, as they touch on the inferiority complex held by a lot of SU fans. All hoops season long, anyone (expert, columnist, voter, etc.) questions SU for being ranked #1 gets a slew of responses from the fanbase often quickly slide to personal insults and often into vulgarity.
Also, when was the last time you sat in a Syracuse fan section and didn’t hear something yelled in the heat of the moment that didn’t embarrass you? (This is not just SU, obviously, but the fact that Gottleib’s reputation as a Syracuse basher makes Orange fans quick to jump on him.)
When was the last time...
…you went to any sporting event Little League through the pros where you didn’t hear something that embarrassed you? Society as a whole has gotten publicly vile.
I am very guilty of this
At a local college hockey game, I yelled to the refs “fuck you” after a crap call.
The RIT hockey fans (Corner Crew) start chanting / singing 3 Blind Mice when the refs make bad calls
They also point at the opposing goalie and chant “It’s all your fault!” after an RIT scored goal is announced over the PA.
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-tip
We tell the opposing goalie that he sucks, by name,
after he lets up a goal in Lacrosse…

he's taking anecdotal evidence
of a few morons on Twitter or a couple of people he may have met at a live event and categorized the whole fan base. It’s juvenile and something you josh with your friends about (my fans are less ugly than your fans!). But it’s obvious he loves to poke us and the people who respond directly to him in a nasty way on Twitter are just feeding the troll.
That's part of his job
Good point. I think we all need to remember that, along with providing analysis, it’s Doug’s job to stir the pot and liven up debates. Remember, he’s not just a college basketball analyst, he’s also a talk radio host. His Twitter handle is @GottliebShow, not @GottliebFactualDebate. Whenever we as fans get riled up by something he says we’re just playing his game.
That's
every fanbase.

I'd say we are a pretty angry fan base
- and not even that has people happy.
Apparently, happiness will only come when all differences of opinion are extinguished.
If that is not anger, it is some serious lack of self esteem.

I can't believe he writes like that
especially for his official Twitter account. You’d think he’d write more professionally, not like a twelve year old girl writing on her Twitter. I’m genuinely surprised there wasn’t a winking face with a tongue out at the end. ;-P
Snitches get stitches.

I was thinking the same thing
Hard to take Doug seriously when he writes like that. He marched grammar and punctuation off of a cliff, rappelled down the cliff to beat them with a stick and then fed them to a piranha. O.K., that metaphor was probably over the top, but I’m angry and drinking booze while writing this.
I"M MAD AS HELL!!!!
SOMETHING, SOMETHING, SOMETHING, WARGARBBLEAAAARGGG
Since the early 1990's I have not been able to get Mike Hopkins' bloody face out of my brain. I don't remember what game it was but I'll never forget that as my first memory of SU basketball. Mike Hopkins, bloody face, bloody nose, all for the love of Syracuse.
I'm (respectfully) hasseling him hahaha

My first! I was very excited.
@GottliebShow @cdtreece You don’t think some, NOT ALL, of any fan base could be categorized in the same way? Weak sauce, man.
@MikeIntaglietta @cdtreece hey man I am sharing your rep, reps are earned- it is not the majority-but enough to earn a rep
My response to him, unacknowledged, was that as a member of the media, he has a hand in creating rep, not just sharing it.
A perusal of the Yahoo or ESPN comments sections proves one thing: 90% of SU, UK, KU, UNC, and Duke fans that comment on those sites are raging jerks. SU fans more often this year than in previous years because of our exposure. But the vast majority (VAST majority) of those fan bases are composed a normal cross section of people. Some knowledgeable, some ignorant. Some overly enthusiastic, some casual.
SU fans, overall, suffer from a slight defensiveness and low self esteem. The others suffer from entitledness and an insufferable smugness. But most fanbases are just comprised of good people and to call us “vile, completely disgusting, and angry” is not at all cool.
Yahoo & ESPN site comments
99% of any fan base that comments on those sites are jerks, many bordering on deranged. It’s syracuse.com gone to plaid. If you see a comment on an ESPN or SI.com or any site like that, chances are it’s extremely hostile and degrading to someone and the person who made it likely needs some professional help or at least to get outdoors a lot more. I now stay away from those things like the plague.
Do we actually have a reputation for being an unpleasant fan base?
Aside from the Gtown incident a few years ago, I’ve never heard that.
Also, not all reputations are earned. Logic fail.

Someone at ESPN has our back.
From the Power Rankings:
The Orange have been the most dominant team this season and it’s not close. Pick apart the schedule if you’d like but Syracuse has handled every test. There are no primaries this election year in the Big East. The race is over.

that was Katz, he wrote all the paragraphs for the Power Rankings
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-tip
Call Gloria Allred
We Syracuse fans should file a defamation and slander lawsuit against Mr. Gottlieb.

Ummm, so whats his point?
Never understood the fascination with Gottlieb or any other “talking head with an opinion”. Its what they get paid to do…be “controversial”, & get responses.
Just try watching that CBB show w/ Gottlieb & Katz- Dougie goes out of his way to contradict Katz & bring up counter-points.
ESPN force-feeds this confrontational, in-your-face POV, & then wonders why some yahoos at a ball game start acting the same way? Ever try listening to Steven A. Smith for more than 30 seconds? Or how about Bayless or that noise on Around The Horn?
I mean nothing says “class” more than mocking laughter with the “NOT Top 10”, right?
As usual, the biggest hypocrites in the room are ESPN.
A portion of our fanbase is seriously starting to rival Kentucky in its lunacy and harrassment of media personalities
Even if you think they are wrong, you are making all the rational fans of SU look bad by going at it this way.
Syracuse nation just annexed the Paul Finebaum show

Thank god we're the only fan base on earth that has unpleasant elements
I was NOT, for example, heckled by a grown man in Notre Dame gear at the Lacrosse final for, when, obviously our teams were not even playing each other. It did not continue for nearly the entire game.
Also, UCONN fans did not shout homophobic insults at the SU student section during the 6 overtime game. This was also not another grown man harassing a group of college students.
We were not insulted by UNC fans as we left MSG after beating them. We were not harassed by Pitt fans when leaving Heinz Field after losing to them.
I’m so glad I’ve never seen unpleasant behavior from any fans of other teams.

Also, we were not insulted
and told to “get [our] resumes ready” by a Georgetown fan at a Field Hockey game bothered that we had the audacity to sing our fight song and alma mater.
Also, we were not physically attacked by Rutgers fans last year leaving their football stadium.
It’s good to know that other schools set such a good example.

The georgetown field hockey thing
still the weirdest moment that did not happen in my entire life.
