The Ranked True Road Game Debunkage

The Syracuse Orange are still the No. 1 team in the land. So whatcha got?

Calling us overrated is just lazy and boring at this point.

Complaining about our non-conference schedule is over.

We just beat the No. 20 team in the nation so you can't say we haven't played anyone good lately.

So what's left? What will this week's caveat to Syracuse's ranking be?

Nice win for Syracuse. Believe it or not they don't play a ranked team on the road until Feb. 13 at Louisville.
Jan 07 via TweetDeckFavoriteRetweetReply

Now, let's just state right away that I'm not writing this to attack Seth Davis et al. (especially since at this point they're talking a great deal of pleasure in our complaining). This is for when you sit down in the bar to watch the Villanova game or start talking about SU in the office and some jerk alum from a Catholic school who wears a bowtie regurgitates that fact back to you.

Star-divide

So, since Seth brought it up, yes it's true. We don't play a ranked team on the road until February 13th. First of all, obviously that's our fault. We always make our own Big East schedule. Just like how we tell the Preseason NIT who to invite.

Second, the unsaid implication of that statement is that other top schools like Kentucky, North Carolina and Ohio State play a ranked team on the road way sooner than that.

Let's check.

  • Ohio State's next road game against a ranked team...February 4th at Wisconsin.
  • Duke's next road game against a ranked team...February 8th at North Carolina.
  • Syracuse's next road game against a ranked team...February 13th at Louisville.
  • Kentucky's next road game against a ranked team...February 21st at Mississippi State.
  • North Carolina's next road game against a ranked team...February 25th at Virginia.

No road games against a ranked team in January? All five of these teams should be put on probation.

I'm so fed up

with the media over our schedule. You know who didn’t make our Big East schedule? Syracuse. You know who did? The Big East. And if we had it our way, we’d be playing at Georgetown in January instead of playing Providence again

Well said

Why is it that we play Louisville twice like every year?

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

I'd happily play 5 games against GTown every year

2 in the Dome, 2 in the SU Verizon Center, and the other in MSG

SU Verizon Center

A little known fact, all the signage/signage installation in the VZ center was managed by a company in upstate NY.

Yeah, but

All the teams you list have already played a road game against a ranked team except us and UK (who played at Indiana when they were unranked and apparently should have been ranked). However, they all lost all of those road games against ranked teams so what does that say about them?

I’m not defending Seth Davis by any means because I think he’s a terrible college basketball writer, I’m just stating a fact here. Regardless of this fact, I think Cuse is easily the #1 team in the country without any yeah-buts.

by JB44ever on Jan 10, 2012 9:16 AM EST reply actions

I agree

That railing against the media for whatever caveat or addendum they might try to attach to SU’s ranking is kind of pointless and I’m done wasting energy on Ron Morris and the rest of them. As long as the team plays well, I’m satisfied.

In fairness to Seth, though, while the unsaid implication that you point out could be read into that, one could also read into it “Get used the Orange being at #1 for a wile as their upcoming schedule is favorable to their continued success with the way they’re playing.” This alternate interpretation provided independent of what the other schools are doing, since as long as SU keeps winning, they’ll likely remain #1 in the rankings.

Anyway, I prefer to enjoy the season and the way the team is playing rather than being pissed off over anyone else’s interpretation of it. For all the opposing fans talking smack, the counter-argument is easy. SU is undefeated and ranked #1 and your school is not. For every cupcake you lay at our door, I will lay just as many at yours and luckily there is a game on to decide for sure.

Why are you guys so sensitive...

…to what a few people are saying? You are the number 1 team in the country. You are undefeated in the best basketball league in the country. Act like you’ve been there. You have more posts on here about who is not voting you number one and who is not giving you any respect. Wait until your in the ACC with a cupcake conference schedule then they are really going to talk smack! (sorry, had to throw that in :). Good luck the rest of the way except for that February 4th road game you guys have in the big City. See you there!

Is Lou Carneseca gonna be named interim coach in his absence?

Since the early 1990's I have not been able to get Mike Hopkins' bloody face out of my brain. I don't remember what game it was but I'll never forget that as my first memory of SU basketball. Mike Hopkins, bloody face, bloody nose, all for the love of Syracuse.

I don't think he'll be on the sidelines again until the Fall.

His surgery was something like seven hours long and he apparently had some sort of set back when he came back in November and coached four games. Docs said it was too soon. He is running practice and is recruiting but his docs have not cleared him for game coaching. He was at the Garden for the Louisville game but up in a luxury box. Dunlap is really good so the team is in good hands, but Lavin has a way of calming his guys down – an important skill when you have all freshmen. Never see him angry on the sidelines or in huddles. He said there is no timeltable for his return and he could be back in February, but I think it’s doubtful. He gets along well with Jimmy B (he gets along with everybody really) and he has said they have talked about it a lot. Same with Calhoun.

You really don't...

…this is the best Cuse team I have seen and not because of their record. Not a good year for the Johnnies to throw five freshmen at them.

My feeling on the matter is that people pick up on the criticisms of this SU team as an indictment of our program.

We’re 5th all time in wins by a NCAA school (St Johns is 7th btw), but we’ve only won the one national championship*

So, the fact of the matter is that we’re not considered in the same boat as teams like UNC, Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas, but we feel like we should be. Thats why those teams (less Kansas) were ahead of us in the polls this year.

The only reason that I see why Kentucky (who starts 3 Freshmen and 2 Sophomores), and Duke (who lost their best player) were ranked above us in the pre-season poll is because they are Kentucky and Duke.

*N.B. as much as I would love to see us have a home game with the 1918 or 1926 Helms Foundation Champs throwback jerseys, I don’t really count that as a national championship

When you win...

…it shuts everyone up. What people are you worried about? First, everyone hates the Big East. The last thing they want to see is a Big East team ranked #1 or winning the National Championship. Big East competition is the best (I know you guys will be ACC soon but I think you have to admit the ACC is pretty weak after Duke and UNC. I don’t see you guys being challenged to much in that league). The Big East conference schedule is brutal. No other legaue makes its teams run through a gauntlet like ours. Take St. John’s for a moment. We are in the middle of a five game swing that puts us playing UConn on the road, Louisville at home, Cincy and Quette on the road and G’Town at home. Every team in the league will have a stretch like that. Is Duke going to have that? Is Kentucky going to have that? Nope. That’s why they have to schedule better OOC teams. So I would take outside critism with a grain of salt. Someone thinks Kentucky should be number 1? Let them host UConn, then do a road swing at Pitt (which sucks right now but you get the point) and West Virginia. Don’t sweat it Cuse. Just play.

by redmen9194 on Jan 10, 2012 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

I think Seton Hall had an equally brutal Schedule.

Like SU, Louisville, UConn, then SU again in a span of a few weeks.

But back to my point… We have been winning, and now the win over Marquette has apparently won over Seth Davis. So my point is that it seems to me that if the current Orange team was wearing Kentucky, Duke, or Carolina Blue jerseys, they wouldn’t have to prove anything and they would get the benefit of the doubt.

I don’t fully subscribe to this, but I have to admit that I resent the fact that we’re really not considered as an elite program on the same level as the aforementioned teams, but I understand why we’re not.

At some point in the season

We will lose. Very likely more than once. And then we won’t be #1, at least for a period of time. Given that near certainty, I have to admit it’s ridiculous to care about who is voting us #1 right now or trying to say we aren’t really #1.

When the games and the numbers lead to no other rational conclusion than we are the #1 team, it’s natural to see a snub as intentionally disrespecting the team/school. So of course we jump on it, as probably any other fan base would.

But…overall, yes we are just whining because we have nothing else to really be that concerned about. Which is wonderful in more ways than one, considering the beginning of the season.

by Orange&P on Jan 10, 2012 10:27 AM EST reply actions

I am quite fine

with just enjoying it without trying to find some sort of reason to whine. I get that we are used to finding silver linings in the clouds… but we are all silver right now and people are grasping for the clouds. I mean, this generation of fans has a national championship… a #1 seed… the 6 OT game… we are headed to the ACC…. and we are undefeated at some point in January AGAIN.

Dictated, but not read.

I took this to mean more about the quality of the Big East this year

than anything else. It sounds like Seth is sort of surprised that our first road game against an opponent is so late since the Big East is usually tough like that. Maybe I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt though.

Ooo yea that's hot.

So…ya know…up to you.
