By now we all know that Syracuse is going to the ACC. (I hope sooner rather than later)
The Big East's current TV contract pays football schools around $3.5 million per year. The ACC's current TV contract pays each school $12.9 million per year.
That means the Syracuse Athletics Department now has $9.4 million more to spend each year. (could be more if the ACC gets a new contract)
Now the question us Syracuse fans must ponder is, what exactly will Dr. Darryl Gross do with all this new cash-money?
I personally would LOVE to see SU add more teams. We currently only offer 7 men's teams, and 11 women's teams. (thanks Title IX)
I think the most sensible options are:
- Men's Ice Hockey (I think it's sad S.U. doesn't offer hockey, when were in frickin Central New York and every other little school in the state seems to have a D1 team. Cornell, Clarkson, RIT, RPI, etc.)
- Baseball (S.U. used to have a baseball team until it was disbanded in 1972. While browsing some ACC forums I noticed that every ACC team currently offers baseball, and lots of ACC fans were wondering if Syracuse would bring the team back)
- Wrestling (S.U. had a very successful wrestling program that produced 34 All-Americans and 5 Olympic Wrestlers, but the team was cut in 2001 due to Title IX)
- Swimming (recently "phased out" from the initial cut in 2007-08 due to Title IX and aging facilities at Archbold Gymnasium. The team existed for over 90 years. I was member of the S.U. Student Government at the time and helped fight for the current swimmers to atleast live out their 4 years of school and eligibility rather than face a drastic immediate cut. Unfortunately the decision to cut the team was not reversed, but atleast the phase out helped the current athletes.)
If Syracuse University could afford to add one team and one team only with the new ACC money what team would you want added?
