All SU Students Get into Rutgers Game Free
This e-mail just went out to all SU students:
Dear SU Students:
I appreciate your enthusiasm at the Dome this year, especially during the Wake Forest game. The atmosphere has been electric! As we prepare for our conference opener with Rutgers this Saturday, I need your help. Your spirit and enthusiasm carry over onto the field - you truly inspire our players. They need your support this weekend as we begin our quest for a BIG EAST Championship.
With that in mind, I am extending you an invitation to attend the Rutgers game free of charge. All you need to do is present your SUID at Gate E. Let Rutgers know why the Carrier Dome is known as the "LOUD HOUSE!!!"
The game will be televised as the BIG EAST Game of the Week. Let the rest of the conference know what is in store for them when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. Wear your orange. Cheer loud. I will see you Saturday!
Go Orange!
Doug Marrone
IMPORTANT: As a thank you to our current student season ticket holders, we are offering you a free general admission ticket to one of the following basketball games in November--choose from Fordham, Manhattan, Colgate or Eastern Michigan. If you are a dual season ticketholder (football and basketball), you will then receive two tickets for the selected basketball game. Please contact the Carrier Dome Box Office for your ticket(s) after November 1, 2011. *Remember, if you are a season ticket holder, doors open at 10:00 am and all others will be admitted at 10:30 am.

Sounds like it
Sounds like you are right he wants turnout every game and frankly he should get it.
Hey Dan get a group of guys together and walk all around the dorms and University Neib banging pots and pans at 10am saturday maybe that will help get people out of bed for FREE FOOTBALL!
Note: do this only if you can run fast or are un-afraid of consequence.
Nice work
There can be no complaints that the University does not do enough. Short of free beer for underage kids, what else can they do???
O/T Fun Fact: Since Paterno debuted as the Nittany Lions’ head coach in 1966 there have been 886 coaching changes among the current 120 FBS schools.

I love this
But I still wonder if it will kill the nooner effect. Most college kids dont wake up before noon on a saturday.
Syracuse '13
I didn't want to get up before noon on school days
But I do recall waking up pretty early to do social events. And that’s not an excuse at every other college in the country. Actually, it’s a horribly lame excuse. Who cannot party at 10 am????
Dictated, but not read.
Ditto
I had trouble getting up for 1PM classes, but would show up at the Dome at 6AM for a noon basketball tipoff. This might help, but I think that the greater problem is just apathy. People still expect the Orange to lose just about every week, and dont’ want to haul themselves up to the Dome for that, free tix or not.

Lame excuses
I remember rolling out of bed at 1130, throwing on my Real Men Wear Orange shirt, and watching us play nooners against the UCF, Temple and Rutgers of the world, and not really caring that it was “early” on a Saturday and I was extremely hungover.

I hate that excuse.
College students can wake up hungover or still drunk no problem. They do it all the time for other reasons, not doing it for a game is stupid. Hell, they can just party all night, eat brunch, go the game and then crash afterwards. They will wake up in time to party again Saturday night.
I went to every football game for four seasons. A lot of those were nooners. It’s really not that difficult.

I'm reserving optimism
they did this for #4 Cincy a few years back, and it was the smallest section we ever had.
Still the right move though, especially the bottom part so they don’t tick off the season ticket holders. I really hope this works…

It was Halloween…but it was a nooner. It was a really bad scene. I had 5 friends visiting me from home, and I think they made up about 10% of the section.

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.
Really? You’d think I’d remember this. Looking at my pictures, I was there and taking said pictures. And Otto wore costumes. But I remember NOTHING about this day either football or Halloween related. Which is especially odd because I didn’t even start drinking for another month.
Actually, I do remember some incident of the season ticket holders thinking that it would be cool if we got something else for the fact that we’d already paid.
'Cuse 2010, Michigan 2012
I was at that game when I was a student
If I remember correctly it wasn’t advertised that well. Despite having season tickets I didn’t hear about that offer until I got to the game that day. Hopefully this works out a lot better.
I’m not a fan of ALL free games. ‘Cause you know eventually it’ll turn into “it’s free, so why should I bother?”
But this is the right direction. The student section feeds the crowd.
I don't think the students should have to pay anyway
The only time students should have to pay is when demand is too high and not every student can get in.
We could be heading this way, but if kids aren’t going to show up either way, they’re not going to make them free. This weekend will be telling.

Florida State has free student tickets. If it’s a high-demand game, it’s first come, first served. If you want guaranteed tickets (they’re generally available without much trouble for games other than Miami/Florida/top 10 teams coming in), you can pay (they call it the “Student Booster” program) and get guaranteed admission.
I like it that way, personally.

I've heard FSU has some major issues with their student tix process
Not sure the fine details but they were complaining about it on one of their boards the other day, after they had come over to welcome us to the ACC
I used to write for the DO (when it didn't suck)
and bitched and moaned about the fans endlessly. I interviewed someone from the SID athletic department about this. The claim was that state schools offer free tickets for the most part and it’s built in to their tuition or something along those lines.
I don’t really understand why that makes any sense, especially since SU charges around 50 gs a year. Like the rest of the interview (better seating for students for bball, etc.) the person was spewing nonsense.
http://cusepulp.blogspot.com/
Nebraska
I forget what they charge for Student Season tickets, but it is a lot. They also fill the student section every time.
The other really cool thing they do is that students can sell their student section tickets to regular fans that may want to sit in the student section. Any non-student that is going to use a student ticket just has to get the ticket validated (which means bring the ticket to the box office and pay a fee to bring it up to a regular price ticket).
It works pretty well, I’ve used it many times to sit with my brother and sister in their student section.

Size, not cost, is the issue
Florida St – 31,005 undergrad
Syracuse – 14,200 undergrad
Michigan – 26,208 undergrad
Nebraska – 19,000 undergrad
Part of the reason we have difficulty filling the student section is that we are not a rabid football school, part is also that we just don’t have as many undergrads. With an extra 5 or 10k undergrads around, that would probably help fill the stadium
Yeah
But the Dome is also half the size of those other schools’ stadiums. The Big House is, what, almost 120k capacity now? So while, yeah, sheer numbers will be skewed by student body size, the relative percentage of seats filled by students won’t be. I think that’s part of the frustration with attendence. We know for a fact that 35,000 people are willing to come to the Dome in the dead of a Syracuse winter to see a basketball game. Why can’t those same 35,000 come on a beautiful fall day for a football game?

However, I have a strong feeling the look of the ID has undergone several revisions since 2000. Plus I live in Miami. Plus I look far too old to be a college student.

I have an idea.
Take the Dome and revamp everything.
Combine all the big donors and such to the sections behind the SU bench. Let the older people park there. All of them combine into one section. More of a reserved, classy environment. Give them seats. Whatever.
On the side behind the visiting bench… make that “Lower General Admission.” If you paid for a lower bowl ticket, you can sit there. If you are a more active season ticket holder, you can opt to go sit over there. Whatever suits you. Why not let all the rowdy people sit there??? #1, the rowdies will bother the visiting team more. #2, when the camera hits the other side of the stadium, it will looked packed because people will want THOSE seats.
Meanwhile, do the same for the upper section. Behind the SU bench—season tickets for people with less CA$H/donorability. Keep a family section adjacent to those season ticket holders.
But then the rest of upper deck is “Upper General Admission.”
Then… in the 4th quarter, the whole Dome becomes General Admission. If fools want to leave, nothing stops anyone from squeezing down into the lower bowl. Keep them out of the Big Roller area if necessary. But the rest of the Dome anyone can slide down into.
Dictated, but not read.
makes a ton of sense
would be hard to enforce, though.
But it always bugged me how the side the TV cameras focuses on is always much more empty than the SU side.

Stupid
Give me the $22 or whatever or let me get free food in the dome. WTF am I going to do with an extra ticket to a basketball game against Eastern Michigan? Complete bullshit. Not that I don’t want to see more students there, but don’t tell me the one of the tickets as part of the package I bought is worth nothing right now.
Amazing
what people will criticize. Be happy that the University is taking steps to get more of your fellow students involved. In reminds me of employees where I work bitching because other started out at a higher pay grade then they did when they started 5 years ago. We not be happy for the fortunes of others rather than bitching that you got nothing out of this deal? I highly doubt that students who aren’t season ticket holders were holding out for this deal. If it converts 50 students into even part time fans it was worth it.
Ahh…feel better now, I do.

Not complaining about getting others involved
Im ecstatic about that. I can’t wait for the game and the pre-game drinkfest with friends who usually don’t go to football games. But don’t compensate me with something I already have, at least appreciate those of us who show up and scream our brains out for both sports (and others). All I want is a beer and a dog out of this, because that actually has some value. A ticket to something I already have a ticket to does me nothing, and the amount of people who will be scalping those will outweigh the demand for them, leaving most of us with nothing.
Also, I really hope this works
And they decide to extend it to other football games and non-conference bball games.
Don't hold your breath on free food/beer
Beer will never happen due to age issues. I have no idea how food works, but it would probably be a cash outlay to fork over food vouchers as opposed to giving away tickets that weren’t going to be sold.
If you’ve already got football + hoops tickets, you’ll get two tickets to one of those games. You don’t want them, sell them. Hell, I’ll buy them off of you if you’re allowed to sell them.
As I said above, you’re getting something for nothing. Stop complaining. Technically the university doesn’t have to give you anything. That wouldn’t go over well from a public relations stand point, but it’s true none the less.
We will not rest until we see these capitalist octopuses annihilated.

Awesome that you support the teams
And we clearly need more fans like you who will go to all the games. With that said, I just don’t get the “stupid” comment. The purpose of this is not to compensate you with a hot dog for going to the games, it’s to get more people to experience a game. Watching us beat down Rutgers is worth whatever any ticket costs.
I just can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t think this is a good thing or have their first reaction be that a freebie ticket is not good enough. Support the team and and enjoy a rocking student section.
Go Orange!
I understand where he's coming from
It’s not really a “freebie”. He already paid for it in the form of a Rutgers football ticket. Plus I would assume most students that have football season tickets would also have basketball anyway.
My idea would be to give the students that have season tickets a sort of pregame in Club 44. Maybe invite some older players to have a meet and greet with the die hard fans and some food. Who could turn that down?
They're essentially telling me a game against E Michigan is equal in value to the Rutgers game
That’s bogus before even mentioning that I already have a ticket to that game. Again, how many people have both football and basketball tickets? On top of tickets already being scalped, do you honestly believe there is going to be demand for that many tickets from people scalping to any of those games offered? So what the hell else am I going to do with that ticket? This isn’t a stock where I bought it with a chance to sell high or anything like that, either. Now I’m not getting the value out of my purchase.
I am absolutely stoked that everyone is already talking about going, and we’ve already got a ton of people planning on drinking and grilling all morning. This might be the best football game experience I’ll get in my time here, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a right to get what I, or anyone else in my position, paid for.
Also
It isn’t like I’m going to get better seats than the students who are showing up on a freebie, either. If the student section is packed full of kids who have no clue about football when I show up, I’m going to be stuck behind them. At the very least make sure we’re closer than those guys. We’re the ones making the most noise, anyway. Isn’t that what the goal of this is?
i hear you
but to the outsiders (and I know you’re not one of them), the positives seem to outweigh the negatives.
Hey if they haven’t been to a game before, I doubt they’ll show up super early. And if they do, just make them move. Make up some policy or “I heard row N gets free beer pretty much every game cause someone’s cousin is the vendor” comment.
http://cusepulp.blogspot.com/
Of course the way to make sure you get to sit near the front for a first come first serve event is to… get there early.
Do we know that they are not planning to use the different entry times for season ticket holders vs. single game ticket holders for this game? I guess if they aren’t swiping, maybe they won’t.
'Cuse 2010, Michigan 2012

To describe the SU student body's support of the SU Football team...
In a word…, “WEAK!”
by Jimbo in Chicago on Sep 28, 2011 1:06 AM EDT reply actions
I always wondered why SU didnt just add a “sunk cost” into tuition/student fees that cover all sports? I understand with 13,000 undergrads, not every one wants to pay for sports. Oh well. Large parts of tuition and fees go to things you dont want or dont use.
Currently, only a small percentage are buying football tickets. Im sure a larger percentage buy basketball.
If you make everybody pay for all sports, you can make more money, and charge less, since you get a larger volume. Plus, then you market the football (and esp basketball) games as they do at Duke, etc. You are not guaranteed a seat. Make people want to show up.
Granted….people will reply that its not fair to charge everybody. Or, they will say if students dont pay out of pocket, they might feel less inclined to go.
Anyway, kids. JUST SHOW THE EFF UP AT THE DOME AND HAVE SOME DAMNED FUN.
One thing about paying...
you tend to show up for what you pay for. If it’s free, it’s easy to blow off.
The students complaining about this are just kids learning how to form judgments. That starts with complaining about everything (i.e. challenging authority). Most of the time they misdirect their complaints.
So it goes.
Dictated, but not read.
I agree that when you pay for it, you feel more invested to use it. However, we KNOW a lot of kids paid for the RI and Toledo games and didnt use it.
I dont think making it a part of the student fee would hurt attendance, since it is already so bad. Also, I believe (Dan, correct me if I am wrong) ALL STUDENTS got a free ticket for the Wake game. Basically, a “come try it, and if you like it, please buy tickets” kinda thing. And the attendance for that game (granted it was Wake and a Thursday) was pretty good.
That's usually only for Freshmen
They get the first game of the year free
I understnad all of the arguments
And agree with most. But it comes down to this. If you want fans, student or otherwise, to come to your games, win more games. Men’s basketball draws crowds because people go to the games expected to see a W. Football doesn’t draw crowds because people expect to see an L. Even squeaker wins against teams like URI and Toldeo don’t really help. HCDM has the team headed in the right direction, and I understand his want for fan support. But until fans can reasonably expect a win just abotu every game, attendence will suffer.

Daryl needs to take some of that ACC cash and upgrade the seating in the Dome. Historical attendance numbers bear this out. Don’t have the link here at work, but the periods of best attendance have followed sustained success and averaging 8-10 wins. Coach Mac’s years (87-92) and the McNabb era (98-02) – I’m operating on memory for the years, but they’re about right. Maronne keeps winning 8-9 games per year, the crowds should start to pick up maybe later this year or next.
I’ve looked at the Syracuse Metro Reporting Area population figures, and while the city has lost people, Oonondaga County and the MRA have remained pretty flat. The numbers did show that the composition has changed a bit. Mean age is up a couple of years, and minorities (asians and hispanics) have replaced some caucasians, but I don’t think it’d be enough to radically change the available fan pool too much
We will not rest until we see these capitalist octopuses annihilated.
