So shame on me. I went to the Pitt-ND game to meet up with some college friends instead of going to the SU game. Judging by the attendance, I was needed at the Dome.
So a few observations. First, this was a painfully dull game. Very little offensive explosiveness. Pitt is supporting their new coach with Tshirts that say "high octane." Pitt is anything but.
So people say that Syracuse football fans are awful. It was just as bad at Pitt. The game is at Heinz field, the Steeler's stadium, which is nice. None of the students attend the game and season tickets for students are $20, bc no one goes. The student section was tiny. This is a school of 28,000 kids, and I dare say that the Syracuse student section fills more seats that Pitt did for this game as far as I could tell. In general, the stadium has the same percentage of seats filled, bare in mind Piit is a much bigger city.
So the atmosphere was no more exciting than the dome. The dome gets louder on 3rd down. People were falling asleep all around me. The fans are pretty apathetic. Possibly, worst of all, Pitt claims the song Sweet Caroline. Now, im pretty sure 1 in 10 to 1 in 5 college football games play sweet caroline either through the PA or by the band each weekend. It is pretty lame that they claim Sweet Caroline.
Dan Marino is by far and away the most supported Pitt player, with 9 out of 10 pitt jerseys being Marino.
Bottom line, our game atmosphere can be much better, but it is not 100's of quality points below any one else's experience (save for the SEC, Big 12, other big football programs).
