Syracuse 36 - Wake Forest 29 (OT): Links, Recaps, Videos & Whatnot

The Syracuse Orange completed a massive comeback Thursday night when they topped the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 36-29 in overtime to win their season opener. Let's take a look around to see what everyone has to say on the matter.

So you know that TD that Ryan Nassib threw in overtime and that amazing catch by Van Chew to seal the game? Yeah, that was all by accident...

"To be honest with you, I was trying to throw it away," Nassib said of the throw. "I was just trying not to get it picked."

Antwon Bailey had a rough start and his fumble seemed, at the time, to ice the game for the Orange. Then, he flipped a switch and took over. Brent Axe saw what he expected to see out of the senior.

Bailey started slow, like the rest of the offense, but eventually settled into a grove, hitting the hole with purpose, demonstrated good patience, read his o-line well, and proved that this "little guy" can be physical as well.

I'm expecting big things from Bailey this season and nothing I saw in this game has me backing off that opinion.

If you watched Kevyn Scott all night, then you realize that the CB epitomized the Syracuse defense Thursday night.

The senior got beat on a couple pass plays through the first three quarters. He had to leave the game in the third quarter with a leg injury. And later in that period, he took a bad angle on a quick hitch that Wake Forest wide receiver Chris Givens took all the way for six.

But, like the rest of his Orange teammates, he turned it around in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Scott cut in front of Givens for an interception that gave SU a chance to win the game in regulation. And on the last play of overtime, his blanket coverage sealed Syracuse's come-from-behind win.

Did you leave the game early and miss the comeback victory? Doug Marrone ain't mad at (though he did notice...).

"I appreciate the fans, they helped us win this game at the end. And if you wound up leaving, you missed a great game."

Syracuse won its season opener for the second year in a row, first time since 1999 and 2000. We also beat an ACC team at home for the first time since 1994. Love seeing these kinds of stats and streaks go down...let's keep it up.

Andrea Adelson

Is it bad that I miss Brian Bennett writing the Big East blog at ESPN? Andrea never posts anything after 5:30 pm. Her analysis this morning is the kind of quick hit I would have expected from Brian last year IMMEDIATELY after the game. For all his faults, I really miss having him on our blog.

I definitely felt that way at first

but on the whole she’s been pretty fair towards Syracuse, and not uninformed about the conference and its teams. Bennett was good, but I don’t think Adelson is the Pam Ward of football blogging. Go Orange!

I liked Bennett a lot better, hands down

Much better analysis and insight, and his writing felt a lot less like popular opinion regurgitation. -but I think Adelson is warming up to the task. I still feel like shes learning her beat. In another year or two she will be a lot more educated about Big East Football and the dynamics of the conference.

They have her writing

the non-AQ blog as well, which is either to her credit for being talented or to the Big East’s detriment that they lump those two together.

You'd like to think

it’s the former, but most likely the latter or possible just “eh, who cares about the Big East. Give her the independents too.”

I had a chance to watch the game again more in depth this morning.

1. Eric Crume should be starting, the only times we had an effective pass or rush defense was because whenever he came in, he fucking destroyed the center of the Wake Forest line. Kid is a tank and Goggins was ineffective.

2. Secondary played deep zones, there was barely any man coverage. That needs to change.

3. Really should have seen Adonis in the first quarter when there wasn’t space for someone like Bailey to run.

4. Our tackling looks like dogshit.

by Nick Petrilli on Sep 2, 2011 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed throughout.

The secondary concerns me the most I think, but I’m really hoping a lot of last night’s debacle was issues with the scheme that can be adjusted. Tackling has to get better and fast. Bad tackling will kill us if it becomes a recurring problem.

Re: #3

Would have been nice to see anyone other than Bailey get some touches. Harris carried twice, Gully once, Bailey 25 times, most of them up the gut for little to no effect. Take out that 53 yard rip and his stat line reads 24 carries, 61 yards for a whopping 2.54 YPC.

That's the plan though

You know Bailey is capable of breaking off big runs, and once WF was tired he broke through.

It’s like in baseball. Hitting a lot of singles is great, but you need that home run threat. To quote the lazy announcer “Bailey is Syracuse’s home run threat.”

Crume and Cameron Lynch both impressed me

When we were getting mauled up front early, I was wondering why we wouldn’t just put our gigantic DT in there that from the sounds of it had a very good summer. Was definitely pleased with his performance.

Lynch is really the only person in the first half I remember getting into the Wake backfield. I think it was the 3rd drive on defense that he came in for Vaughan. He had a couple well-timed blitzes and was disruptive. They took advantage of his aggression later with an option/pitch-out play, but he still strung it out enough that it wasn’t a big gain before safety help arrived.

Also, I don’t know how it looked on TV, but dear god did Jeremiah Kobena look every bit the track star that he was built up as. That kid is absolutely taking one back this year.

+1

Kobena did look unworldly out there. He can fly with the ball in his hands and has the size that Graham doesn’t

All good points

That was G-Rob tackling at its worst.

Deep zones

Noticed that, too. Tons of space all game.

I think Bud Poliquin

is desperately trying to emulate Peter King.

And, too, you missed a time to wonder . . .

I can’t even describe in words how tortuous that sentence is.

Our offense changed for the better...

…once Harris was brought into the game. He can help open holes in the middle, give Nassib a little more time with some protection, and actually carry pretty effectively. I think Bailey can shine with Harris’ big body shielding him as he comes into the line, and then give Bailey another block to which he can react.

by offthedome on Sep 2, 2011 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

Right

Most of our troubles passing early with time were from them bringing a guys or stunting/twisting against a line that hasn’t worked all too much together. Adam gave that extra degree of blocking protection in there.

by DutchHart on Sep 2, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Harris impressed.

displayed good hands and blocking. With the way he ran the ball I can see his number being called more often to spell Bailey. Kid is proving to be a player
