Syracuse vs. Wake Forest: The Final Countdown
This is it. The Syracuse Orange kick off the 2011 football season tonight against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
You ready? Here's the final pieces of the puzzle to get you all caught up.
Expectations are high for the Syracuse offense this season. Offensive coordinator Nate Hackett isn't going to rely of fancy trickery or anything like that. He's all about the system and how well the Orange can master it.
Don’t look for fancy new plays or formations, Hackett said. But while the playbook is the same, the players are a year older and more experienced, and they’ve had time to grasp the nuances of a complicated offense that’s been a hit in the NFL.
"Right now, Drew Brees and Aaron Rogers run this exact system," Hackett said of the quarterbacks at New Orleans and Green Bay, winners and MVPs of the lat two Super Bowls. "The system that we have can be devastating. That’s why it’s the number one system in the NFL. The problem is it takes a little time. Once it starts clicking, it’s exciting."
QB Ryan Nassib is ready and he knows his margin for error is slimmer than ever before.
"We do have high expectations," Nassib said. "There is no room for excuses this year. Mental mistakes, mental errors, stuff like that, that’s not tolerated. We can’t have that, game in and game out, like we did last year."
A lot of folks out there doubt Antwon Bailey's ability to carry the Syracuse running game. That's no problem for 'Twon...
"I know I can play with these guys, for one," Bailey said. "But just proving everybody wrong and being in the underdog role, it's something I've been in my whole life."
Don't forget about the defense, however. Not while Scott Shafer is in charge. Or should we call him...The Guru?
"That's why I call him a guru, that's why I call him a mad scientist," Lewis said. "Anybody who can take an intricate game like football and turn it into something simple and be successful off of it, got to be some type of guru, right?"

So I played a game of NCAA and whooped UConn.

5 star General
They aught to make you a 5 star general in Ottos army thats what this alum is looking for in the student section. Now Run up to the mount and yank all the freshmen out of there rooms into orange shirts and into the dome!
oh and dont forget to teach them the hey song on the way over.
and don't let them bring keys to shake
Stupidest thing ever.
Oh and please tell them under no circumstance shall the “Wave” be started or participated in
Keys are fine if they are screaming at the same time
you cant have quiet people shaking keys although i got to admit clapping is prolly way louder.
clap and stomp and scream, Keys look stupid and make no noise
Isn’t every play a “key” play anyways?
How bout we shake keys
when we start the “go start the bus chant” with SU up 3 touchdowns with a minute left

There's no way the playbook is the EXACT same
Because I swear to god if I do not see a god damn shotgun formation or a set with more than 3 wide receivers I am going to go apeshit.
Can't say for sure about 3 wide outs
but I’m positive we’ll see shotgun. Problem last year was that Bartholomew couldn’t snap shotgun to save his life. Macky can.
The playbook may be the same, or nearly so, but the players will dictate what you can do with it.
We will not rest until we see these capitalist octopuses annihilated.

What I got from that was that the playbook is the same, but the players are now actually ready to utilize it.
Meaning, even if the playbook is the same as last year, we didn’t see a lot of it actually make it to the field. Things like shotgun and multiple receiver sets certainly could show up since they definitely do for the Saints and the Packers.
The playbook last year had shotgun and 4+ WR sets, we just didn’t have the ability to do either due to injury and Bart’s snapping issues.
I will take Mackys size at Center
over Barts lack of snapping ability. Its almost funny to me that he was that unreliable, as a center, as a snapper that they never did a shotgun.
That Mackys got a lot to live up to this year. No pressure kid!
Sean's obviously not ready to be a hack football announcer.
Nate Hackett isn’t going to rely of fancy trickery or anything like that.
Surely you meant “trickeration.”
GO ORANGE!!!
It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.
this feels like
it could be a catch-22 for the orange tonight. i could see the following headlines
a big blowout type win= “cuse wins big over crappy wake team”
a close win= “cuse hold on against crappy wake team”
a loss= “cuse loses to crappy wake team…back to square one”
no doubt we need a win here to get us started. but i can already see how the pundits will spin this.
in that case...
SU’s defense needs to shut Wake out while Nassib show’s he’s truly mastered the playbook. If he’s decisive and the defense shows how formidable it can be without the players who were on last year’s team, I think the catch-22 scenario goes away.
I couldn't seem to do a FanPost
But please for the love of god someone tell me this game actually got picked up on TV…even ESPN Gameplan. It is still not listed and I just can’t wrap my mind around this being the only BCS matchup tonight and not getting real air play. I’m super excited about a new season, but super pissed I need to be hudled around my fuckin laptop. While I am grateful to see the game at all, ESPN3 can kiss my ass. I see its on TW, but its ot showing up on my SNY on DirecTV——please someone! Find me an actual TV station!!
Sorry bud
Its not the only matchup, UNLV vs Wisconsin is on, and its not on SNY tonight cuz of the Mets game (unless that gets really ugly [distinct possibility]). ESPN3 is the only sure fire bet
"O...M...G. And that's not with a smiley face, that's with a DUNK-NASTY FACE"
Is it me or
is the team coming out in Black and Orange Uniforms tonight? All the press/interviews with coaches and players I have seen this week has had them in Orange and black. That or my monitor is not working properly.
