We're counting down every SU football player from Chandler Jones (#99) to Phil Thomas (#1). Keep track of every player profile right here.
Next up on your Orange-Man Orientation, #23, Prince-Tyson Gulley.
Position: Running back
Year: Sophomore
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 181
Hometown: Akron, OH
High School: Garfield Senior HS
2010 Stats: PTG played in ten games for the Orange last season, mostly seeing time on kick returns. He returned 29 kickoffs for an average of 21.8 yards per, with a long of 47 yards (against Washington). His 23.7 yard kick return average ranked fourth in the conference. He also did some mop-up duty on offense with 74 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries as well as 8 yards on 2 receptions. That touchdown came against Colgate. Hoodoo that!
2011 Projections: While not yet a starter on offense, PRG is a critical component of the squad in 2011. Antwon Bailey is the top dog but Gulley will likely get significant carries. He's also been deemed quicker than Bailey, so expect to see him run some Wildcat and trickeration. Gulley is also listed as the No. 1 kick returner and the No. 2 punt returner, so he'll be getting a lot of action on special teams, assuming he's fully healed up from all that stabbing.
How'd He Get Here?: It was basically between us and the entire MAC for Gulley's services. He chose the Orange over offers from Kansas, Marshall, Toledo, Ohio University, Akron (obviously), Ball State, Central Michigan, Kent State, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan.
Scouts/Rivals Said:.As a prospect he was rated two-stars by Scout as well as by Rivals. ESPN rates him as a three-star RB who "has marginal size but is an absolute burner with great burst, play-speed and acceleration."
Money Quote: "I’m out of the hospital. Yeah, I’ll be back. I’m good. Just taking it slow now." - PTG's first comments after the stabbing incident. Whew.
Links of Wonder: PTG is on Twitter, you should be following him.
Doug Marrone Thinks: "You know, I told Prince the other day that he could be the first player to touch the ball for us this season," Marrone said. "And you know his response? ‘Good, coach. I hope I am, because then we’ll be ahead 7-0.’ You have to love a kid like that. That is the attitude of the young players." - Doug before the 2010 season.
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: When he originally came to us, he was simply Tyson Gulley. He made the switch to his given name, Prince-Tyson Gulley during camp his freshman year. We're all the better for it.
Let Us Get A Good Look Atchya: Here's PTG (along with #SHAMARKO), gettin that grind on.
