This is another entry in the Get To Know Your Local Syracuse Watering Hole series. If you would like to claim a local SU bar of your own, simply email the site and get to writing.

Approximately three years ago, the Syracuse Alumni Club of Washington, D.C., switched to Sign of the Whale, branding it as the place for Syracuse Alumni events. At the time of the switch, the bar was owned by the same individual who owned Rhino Pumphouse in Georgetown. The problem with the old location was that it was not Metro accessible and that we could not watch football games at it due to it being the gamewatching spot for Penn State and THE improper benefits university (aka OSU). The owner and GM of Rhino ensured we got great specials and could continue raising money for our scholarship at his other location. With Syracuse flags adorning the bar all year long, D.C. alumni have deemed Sign of the Whale as their official hangout for SU games and special events.

Most memorable event: Three way tie between staying open late for the six OT game , Getting Marvin Graves to come for a basketball game as a guest bartender and the fundraiser for the former general manager of Sign of the Whale child who unexpectedly passed away a little over a year ago.

Décor: Large flag hanging in the center of the bar, 2003 championship flag on the top floor. All of this is up 24/7/365 (although on occasion the club will borrow the main flag for something).

Famous annual events: All you can drink fundraisers (AYCD) for the SU Alumni Club. During three games a year, the bar allows us to do an AYCD special. 15 dollars goes to the bar, 5 dollars goes to the alumni club. We get an open bar (liquor and beer) until the game is over. This event has raised thousands of dollars for the DC Alumni club scholarship program for current SU students.

Specials/ Deals: Beer, Liquor, burger and wing specials. No cover charge for SU Alumni Club members ever. Specials are extended for all times outside of Friday and Saturday (10 PM to Close) for Alumni Club members. The bar has also been very generous to allow members to host their own birthday and charity events at it. The bar also gave away tickets to the Gtown game at Verizon last year.

Crowds: Standing room only on big games (100s). During basketball games everyone starts cheering "Lets go Orange!’.

Sound & TV: Sound is on for all the games, the number of tvs on depends on the size of the crowd, but its generally on multiple tvs include the biggest ones.
