We're counting down every SU football player, one a day, from Chandler Jones (#99) to Phil Thomas (#1). Keep track of every player profile right here.
#78 is today, and that means it's go-time if you're not up to date with Austin Lane knowledge.
Position: Syracuse Athletics says he's an offensive tackle. The depth chart disagrees, claiming he's a left guard. If HCDM wants to play Lane on his line, he's going to have to know how to play center, too.
Year: Sophomore
Height: 6'6''
Weight: 304
Hometown: Clifton Park, NY
High School: Shenendehowa
2010 Stats: Hard for a lineman to amass stats, but for Lane it's really hard - he didn't play in a game in 2010.
2011 Projections: Doubt we'll see much of Lane on the line this upcoming season. Pugh and Hay didn't start last season at left and right tackle for nothing, and HCDM will rely on that experience. Same can be said for left guard Zack Chibane. Lane has some time to put in before he cracks the big uglies, and that's okay. He's still just a sophomore.
How'd He Get Here: Lane got a partial scholarship to play at SU and had to walk on to the team before the 2010 season. He had also received some interest from schools like UMass and (soon-to-be-Big-East-member?) Villanova.
Scouts/Rivals Said: Like I said, Lane was a walk on before last season, so there's not much literature on him as a prospect.
Money Quote: Here's Lane on why he became an Orange-man:
"I picked Syracuse because the sports management program is rated No. 2 in the country and I have a chance to earn a full scholarship. I’m getting a good education and I have a chance to play at a high level."
Those who can't sport, manage. But like I said, Lane's just a sophomore, and it's awesome to read his head's on straight.
Links of Wonder: Here's the one story I've been pulling most of my info from. Thank you Times Union Blog, I wouldn't really know Austin Lane without you.
Doug Marrone Says: ...can't find anything. Sorry team, better luck next Orange-man.
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Nothing groundbreaking here either, folks. The accolades he received at Shen are kinda cool - he made the first teams of the Times Union, Schenectady Gazette, and Saratogian papers. I'm from that area and a paper-hat trick is a sweet deal.
But hey: find something interesting about Austin Lane and tweet it to me (@nicktoneytweets). If it involves a keytar, double bonus points.
Let Us Getta Good Look Atchya: The pic is small - I'll just link it to you here - but you're going to want to see A-Lane in his Shen greens. Great piece of mean-mugging, sir.
