I'll admit that I've been paying more attention to this situation than any self-respecting 'cuse fan should...but this has been brewing for sometime now, and the only reason I care to bring it up here is a potential opportunity for SU on the recruiting trail. Consider the following:
- HCDM has offered to a dozen or so Ohio kids the last 2 years, roughly 2x as many as during the Grob years
- 2 of the last 3 star RBs have come out of Ohio (Reyes, Carter), plus up-and-comer PTG
- SU is on the upswing, both on the football field and recruiting trail
- The Otto-Man empire knows no boundaries
Granted, I fully expect OSU to hire a name brand HC in his place and recruit the lions share of Ohio's prospects, but there is an opportunity that SU, not mention several other schools are looking to capitalize on. In the Big East, Cincy, Pitt and WVU have got to be licking their chops. Bottom line is I think OSU's influence over the region is going to slip at least little bit. Perhaps a lot, if OSU slips out of conference champion/BCS-bowl contention for a few seasons.
Could this be the key to unlocking the nations (arguably) most fertile recruiting grounds?
There is the fact though, that very few OSU recruits over recent years were holding SU offers, however, I'm willing to bet theres a considerable trickle-down effect that would result. SU doesn't necessarily have to pull kids out of Ohio to benefit from this either. For example, maybe schools like PSU or ND will back off NYS recruiting in order to pluck a few more blue chippers out of Ohio.
Maybe the return of Floyd Little and talk of restoring 44 has me thinking a bit more wishfully about recruiting these days...what do the nunesmagicians think?
