We overachieved all year long and made things interesting for us. We started out undefeated and we do play in the best conference in college basketball. We came in worried about 3 point shooting and defense. What did we have problems with? Our defense at times and our 3 point shooting. (James Southerland...please hit the wide open jumper..that is why you have a free ride)
No one should sit here and bash Scoop or Triche or Kris Joseph. All three of them have had to embrace new roles on almost a completely new team. Wes Johnson, Andy Rautins and AO were the main components from last year while Kris, Scoop and Triche all got good looks because defenses focused on those guys (Rautins, Wes & AO). Scoop does Scoopish things and I hope next year he will just embrace a 6 ppg average 11 assists and 3 turnovers stat line. We have scorers. We NEED a point guard.
Plus we got to see flashes of the future with CJ Fair, Dion Waters and the hustle of Keita. The center position worries me for next year. Does Fab Melo redshirt? Does Riley come back bigger and better? We are going to need scoring next season and I don't know if we are going to get in from the center position again. Rakeem Christmas listed as 6'10" could be a "Rick Jacksonish" player but he won't have the luxury of having a Arinze next to him in the zone or posting up on the block. I think with the "growing pains" of people like Scoop, Triche, Joseph and the growing the freshman went through we should be competitive next year.
I do not buy any hype in freshman anymore after hearing how Paul Harris was going to be the second coming of Carmelo Anthony or how this year people said Fab Melo was one and done. So we will see next year how good our freshman will be, but I am happy with our Sophomore class. (more so Keita, Waiters and Fair)
As for this year I gave the season a "B" overall and do not take for-granted Jimmy B we might not be in the NCAA Championship game every year (like Duke seems to be). But after a conversation with a Rutgers fan at MSG during the BE Tourney, I realized things could always be worse. I mean at least we aren't in Tennessee's situation, John Calipri or Jim Calhoun's recruiting mess.
