Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Mookie Jones

I, like most Syracuse fans, have developed a soft spot for Mookie Jones, and have actually been really impressed with how he's handled himself most of this year. He's been active and supportive on the bench, hasn't complained about playing time, and has just generally seemed more team-oriented.

That said, because I have a soft spot for Mookie I also want to see him succeed, and I just can't foresee a scenario in which he gets significant playing time. I love having him here, but I also believe he could go to any number of other schools and contribute immediately.

I don't pretend to know anything about Mookie's personal life, but I assume he still plans on basketball as a career and I can't help but think he would be better served, personally, by taking his talents elsewhere. That said, if he's happy then I'd love to have him around for another two years, but I can't fathom how tough it would be mentally to come to a great D1 basketball program as a relatively highly touted recruit, and never see significant playing time in five years.

What do you want Mookie to do, and what do you think he will do?

If he transferred

He’d only have 1 year of eligibility left cause he redshirted one already. Makes no sense for him to give up a year. He has 2 years left at Syracuse. If he was gonna transfer he should have done it last year or in December. He should stick around. You never know what’s gonna happen in college ball.

Yup, that's exactly it

If he were going to transfer, he’d likely have done it already. He could still go elsewhere, or even to a D2 school, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense to leave at this point to go to a D1 school.

Unfortunately, Mookie just isn’t a good enough player. He can catch and shoot with the best of them, but to get on the court he has to be able to do more than that. His handle is extremely weak and he’s really not all that athletic. Hope he sticks it out, but I find it hard to believe he’ll be any more than the 9th or 10th guy on an SU team….

He said he loves Syracuse too much to leave

And i wouldnt say its out of the question that he could see playing time. He has 2 years left. Hes being coached by some of the greatest coaches in the game. Theres no reason they cant turn him around because they see what we see, a kid with a good mindset that just wants to play for the school he loves.

He could be a good 6th man his senior year putting up 10 a game. I can see it

I can vouch for this

I saw him at Chuck’s a few weeks ago and he told me that exact thing. Have things changed for him? Maybe, but he seemed pretty set on staying.

I thought it was evident this year

That he needs to see at least a few minutes in every Big East game. There’s always some kind of an energy when he gets into games. I don’t want to see him on the floor when we’re up 5 with 2 minutes to go, but when we’re down 8 in that kind of scenario our team has a much higher chance of making a comeback IMO.
