Hunt For Houston: Syracuse's Road To The Final Four

Photo

As the regular season winds down and the NCAA Tournament looms, it's time to start thinking about the road Syracuse is going to take if they want a chance to actually get to the Final Four in Houston. There's plenty of bracketology seeds and regional placements out there. We spend most of our time focusing on the seed, but where we play those games is also going to have an impact.

Just looking at the places the Orange could end up in the first and second weekend, there's spots that look really appealing and there's spots that don't.

1st Weekend Locations: Washington, D.C., Tuscon, AZ, Denver, CO, Tampa, FL, Cleveland, OH, Charlotte, NC, Chicago, IL & Tulsa, OK.

2nd Weekend Locations: Anaheim, CA, New Orleans, LA, San Antonio, TX & Newark, NJ.

So what does the road to Houston look like for Syracuse? I want to know. And in order to grease the wheels, Supercuts has provided a prize pack for you.

All you need to do is say which two locations you'd like to see on Syracuse's road to Houston in the comments below. By doing so, you're automatically entered to win the following:

  • $20 Supercuts Gift Card
  • $20 Sports Authority Gift Card
  • Desk/Office Basketball Game Set – Hoop/Ball
  • Foam Finger

Also, Supercuts is hooking up a lucky winner with a trip for 2 to Houston from April 1 - 5, 2011. The package includes airfare, 4 nights’ hotel accommodations and $500 of spending money to help enjoy the on-court action. You can go to facebook.com/supercuts to find out more and learn how to enter to win.

Star-divide

Supercuts_gift_card_medium

You've got through Sunday to enter your comment below. I'll be choosing a winner at random on Monday.

So, do you want to see the Orange start in Washington, DC since that would be a "home" game? Or would it be our other "home" Tampa? Or does Charlotte makes sense so Orange Chuck can go to the game?

What about the second round? Newark obviously jumps out at us, but what about New Orleans? Syracuse has good history playing there, should we take advantage of that? Leave your comment below...

Hopefully will go through DC & Newark, the two largest alumni bases outside of Upstate. Having a couple of “home” games didn’t hurt in ’03.

Road to Houston (aka Orange Empire Expansion)

DC and Newark because I live in DC and we dominate the VZ Center and Newark because it’s the Mid-Atlantic Syracuse. Although this would be fantastic for us, the committee doesn’t exactly care what we want and will probably stick us on the west coast just to see Boeheim’s head explode on Selection Sunday.

I’ll go with Tampa and Newark. Newark is the obvious choice and Tampa because I live in DC and cannot afford tickets and I think it would be too upsetting for me to know I was so close and yet so far… Either way, def want to stick to the East Coast!

Charlotte → Newark → Houston → cutting down the nets :)

Thanks for the love Sean but you would be shocked honestly how often I run into people in NC/SC who are either Syracuse alum or grew up in the area but moved down here when jobs did a few years back before everyone got hurt. As of right now in Charlotte, my best options to see SU is to go see the Knicks at Bobcats on the 26th or the Jordan Classic with two of our incoming freshman playing. I will be back in Syracuse to take my grandmother back home and of course, it is BET weekend and none of the sports I saw listed have a home game so guess I am just off to one of those fabulous TULLYS locations to watch it…wearing Orange of course because nobody should watch a Syracuse game unless thye have orange on.

What we really need to be thinking about!

I thought about this for a few minutes and though I would personally prefer DC and Newark for obvious reasons, I feel as though, we need to maximize our chances. In other words, where will the Chipotle curse least exist on the road the final four? After checking each city on Chipotle’s location finder on their web site, it’s clear the least influence on first round cities is Tulsa…only 2 restaurants near Tulsa according the site. The second round cities revealed something very interesting, http://www.chipotle.com/en-us/find/find.aspx?loc=New%20Orleans
NO Chipotles in Nawlins (again, according to the site). No wonder we won a National Championship there (BTW, I attended the semi final game against Texas)! So, it’s pretty clear, it’s gotta be Tulsa and New Orleans. Go Orange! Oh yeah, and I need a haircut!

1. Somewhere where there is no Chipotle
2. Washington & Newark so they only play in “home” states
3. Who cares & Anaheim, so I can drive 6 hours to watch

OSU & Pitt are locks for the 2 Cleveland pods

So there’s practically no hope of going there. I could imagine one of Cinci, WVU, or Marquette showing up in OSU’s pod in an 8/9 game in Cleveland, though.

I just wanna tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Cleveland – Anaheim.

Call me selfish, but I’m an SU grad/ fan living in Orange County, CA. I don’t get to many games, because the team doesn’t travel out here very much. Here’s my logic: Assign them to the West Region. I’m making the assumption that they will capture one of the top 4 regional seeds — in which case they will be in the “pod” system and be assigned a first round location that is geographically favorable. For me it’s a toss-up between Cleveland and DC, geographically (albeit, there may be more Orange fans in DC). That will give them the best chance to advance beyond the first weekend to the Sweet 16 in the West Region in Anaheim. Anaheim is minutes from my house. I might be the only one in the stands wearing Orange — but what better place to celebrate a trip to the Final Four. Not to mention get our fan base out here fired up for the Football team’s trip out here in September to take down USC. GO ORANGE!

DC—→New Orleans—→Houston

DC to start because it’s close and gives us some home court advantage to get rolling.
New Orleans second for four reasons:
1) I live here and want to easily see us play
2) Cuse has some winning history in New Orleans
3) Travel distance. It will happen no matter what, so let’s get the travel down south (and west) out of the way before playing what should be a lesser opponent than any team we face in Houston. The trip from NOLA to Houston is not a tough one.
4) There is NO Chipotle in New Orleans. I cannot stress this point enough people.

Mostly reason 1 though.

Tampa because I can go to the game. Was able to go to the first couple of rounds in ’09 when they were in Miami. That was the last chance I got to see SU basketball in person. Would be nice to do it again.

New Orleans because of the good memories.

Or even better

Just skip the first 4 rounds and just put us directly into the Final 4. Cmon we deserve it. If you make us actually play the games, we’ll probably just goof around and end up losing one of them. Then where will your Syracuse themed Final 4 be NCAA?
