Super Bowl 2011: Should Syracuse Fans Root For The Packers Or Steelers?

via www.packers.com

The Steelers and the Packers are getting ready to kick off the Super Bowl and there's a lot of folks in Cuse Nation who still haven't figured out how they want this one to go down.

Do you root for the Steelers cause they're closer? Do you root for the Packers cause they enjoy cheese? Tough decision.  Let's see if we can't make it easier.

ROSTERS - A quick glance at the active rosters shows that neither the Packers nor the Steelers will feature a Syracuse player during the game. That said, technically a Syracuse player is involved with the Packers. Safety Anthony Smith is among that dubious group of Packer players on IR you've been hearing so much about lately. Maybe that makes you want to root against the Packers for the way they treated players in Smith's position, or maybe you just want to root for them cause he'll probably get a ring if they do win.

There's also this...Smith was originally a Steeler and played for them for three seasons. After the 2008 season the Steelers did not offer him a new deal and he became a free agent. Vengeance time?

HISTORICAL - Historically, the Packers have had six Syracuse players on their roster (Smith, Paul Frase, Blaise Winter, Larry Morris, Tim Moresco and Jim Ringo). Meanwhile the Steelers have had thirteen (Gary Anderson, Craig Bingham, Dee Brown, Erinie Brown, John Brown, John Hinkle, Pat Killorin, Dick Lasse, Terry Richardson, Guy Ruff, Willie Sydnor, Anthony Smith and Craig Wolfley). So I suppose if you want to support the most Orange possible, you can go with the Steelers.

Star-divide

LOCALES - Let's apply where these teams are from to our selection process. The Packers represent Wisconsin, home of Marquette, who recently vanquished us National Marquette Day-style. The Steelers are from Pittsburgh, home to the Pitt Panthers, our nemesis of late. We can hate them both equally for recent transgressions but the Eagles still don't measure up to the Panthers. You can bet there's a lot of folks who are Steeeler fans AND Pitt fans. Let's not give them any more satisfaction than we already have.

FAVRE FACTOR - Brett Favre isn't involved, which is great. A Packer win would tarnish his reputation just a bit as the Packers will have won a Super Bowl without him despite his burning desire to prove them wrong. Aside from every broadcaster out there, we can all go with that.

At the end of the day, Syracuse fans have to go with the Packers. The Anthony Smith factor is present but also a vote for the Steelers is a vote for the Pitt Panthers. And that's just not kosher.

I'm rooting for the Steelers/Big Rape +3

Hopefully the pack win by a GWFG though.

Because of biased police work. The system is biased against rape victims. Especially the vast majority of rapes which are not stranger-rapes. Rape is under reported because victims are not believed, because victims are encouraged not to report, and because victims are blamed for their own rapes. Rather than tell men to stop raping we tell women not to go out at night. The majority of rape kits- these are reported rapes, people who go to the hospital after they are raped and seek medical attention- are not tested.

Ben Roethlisberger is a rapist.

More specifically, the crime scene was never sealed off so all physical evidence was lost. Roethlisberger was never really questioned, the primary reason that the police did not believe the accuser was her level of intoxication (if she was that intoxicated, then she could not legally give consent therefore rape), the sergeant investigating the crime not only made it clear from start to finish that he did not believe her but he also told her that she was wasting her time charging Roethlisberger with rape because he has money and good lawyers. The officer also filed a “non-detailed police report” in order to minimize media attention. The sergeant investigating has since RESIGNED in the midst of an internal investigation into his handling of this case.

I Voted Steelers

Only because Gary Anderson is, or at least was at one time, the all time NFL points leader and is a Syracuse guy. I even had his rookie card until I gave it to my brother for his birthday (he is a SU and Steeler fan and I didn’t need to spend money).

Probably Steelers

My father is from Steel town and my brother followed suit. I guess to show family solidarity I will Go Steelers

FWIW

I think most West Virginia fans are Steelers fans, too.

Me, I’m a Packers fan because I lived in Wisconsin before ’Cuse and my original hometown Browns skipped town on me (the new Browns are a pale shadow of the old, and not a team I can support).

voted Steelers

I don’t like the Steelers, but I HATE the Packers as much as Georgetown, if not more. With the packer lovefest going on in the bradley center last saturday in addition to Cuse losing that game to marquette, it was a personal hell for me. Oh yeah, and marquette screwed up basically our entire Cuse alumni block of tickets, they weren’t scanning at the gates and lots had to be reprinted and of course reassigned which conveniently scattered many of us. I hope their precious football team gets stomped on sunday.

Underdog is here.

I went with Green Bay. When I don’t really have a vested interest I try and go with the under dog. That Helps in college too, because usually Duke, Georgetown, Kansas and UConn are favorites. Come to think of it, that may be how I started this cheer for the underdog malarkey…

MEGO

Three hours of commercials, one hour of football? I’m going skiing, or watching my 6OT disc instead – because seeing UConn lose to the Cuse twice in a week would beat any possible SB LMXVDII outcome. Hope it’s a good game for those who can’t keep away.

I'm rooting for my squares to hit

Also, the Steelers.

I just wanna tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Also, he’s Jonny Flynn’s cousin and wears #44. That’s enough for me.

I'm torn right down the middle.

I don’t have love for either team, but I definitely hate Pittsburgh more. I think I’m just hoping it’s a good game because I really can’t choose a rooting interest here.

I don't hate either team for once.

But the college someone went to is more than likely to have me root against a team than for it.

Historically, I would have supported the Steelers, but....

My allegiance has always been:
1. Bills
2. Steelers
3. Packers

As it is no longer 1994, the Bills are not an option.

But as of late, I am sick to death of Big Ben and his shenanigans. Frankly, the Steelers might just as well be the Jets at this point.

Aaron Rodgers, OTOH, is doing a great job all around and has now pushed the Pack to my personal #2 spot. So… GO PACK!

After this Sunday, I can again concentrate on getting Chan Gailey deported and seeing if Harvard has any more guys who want to move to Buffalo.

Plus, it allowed Jerry to shorten his commute. Problem solved.

Packers. Can’t root for any team associated with James Harrison.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
