Update: Breathe easy, Greg Adkins says "There's nothing to it...I don't know where that started" in regards to this news.
Scott Shafer may have been Doug Marrone's most important assistant coaching hire, but Greg Adkins would be 1A. Adkins came to us with a reputation as a recruiting whiz, something he proved at previous stops in Troy, Marshall, Georgia and Tennessee. It's also something he's proving here at SU where the Orange are arguably coming off their best recruiting class in years. He's also working closely with Doug Marrone on rebuilding the Syracuse offensive line, something the two of them have a vested interest in.
When you've got a recruiter with an eye for talent, you better believe that someone else will notice. And that someone is Mark Richt, Georgia's head coach. According to ESPN, Mark's got an opening for an OL Coach and Greg is on his short list:
Greg Adkins: Adkins, who just finished his second season as Syracuse's offensive line coach, was a member of former Georgia coach Jim Donnan's staff from 1996 to 2000. Adkins also coached offensive lines at Marshall, Troy and Tennessee. He is regarded among the best recruiters in the country, helping sign future NFL players DeMarcus Ware at Troy, Boss and Champ Bailey and Will Witherspoon at Georgia and Erik Ainge at Tennessee.
The good news as far as I can tell is that the job doesn't necessarily come with the dual role of Recruiting Coordinator, and would therefore be a step backwards for Adkins. Then again, it would be a entry way back into the SEC, an area Adkins knows well.
Richt told reporters on Wednesday that he hopes to have a new offensive line coach hired by the end of next week. So who's taking the first shift to form a human barrier around Adkins?
