Syracuse Basketball In Perspective

via www.allaboutbipolar.com

Yikes with the losses, right? Enough of that. I didn't sign up for this. Neither did you. The sky is falling. Everyone grab what you can and head for your 2012 bunker. Bring two of every animal (one from each sex, remember? Like we discussed...). Make sure there's a doctor, a chemist, a botanist and a philosopher cause, you know, ideas, man. And pray for the End of Days to pass over you while you dine on unleavened bread...

OR

Let's put things in perspective. It requires us to take a step back off the ledge. A risky proposition, I know. Last night emotions ran high, I should know. I hated referees and Scoop Jardine's mental capacity. I don't actually hate those things (though I do believe those refs are awful at their given profession).

Here's what I do know. Syracuse is 20-5 after 25 games. It's not as great as 24-1 but it's not exactly as bad as 15-10, now is it? And in the grand scheme of things, that's a pretty good record for Syracuse basketball in a given season.

Got a email from my former Syracuse neighbor and Portland, Maine's favorite news anchor Dave Guthro, who helped me realize just how okay things are in the big picture. Here's his crackerjack analysis of how this season measures up to some of our best overall seasons since 1996 after 25 games.

(Sidenote: Dave and I used to have song that we created in the voice of the guy who works behind the counter at Acropolis Pizza. It went to the tune of Three Times A Lady but as we re-interpreted it (in his voice, a little like the Soup Nazi), it went "One slice...two slice...three slices, maaaybe.  I'llllll serrrrrrve youuuuuu." We were very cool.)

1995-96: 19-6 (included stretch where we lost 4 of 5)
Eventual NCAA seed: #4

1997-98: 20-5 (included stretch where we lost 3 of 4)
Eventual NCAA seed: #5

1999-00: 22-3
Eventual NCAA seed: #4

2002-03: 21-4
Eventual NCAA seed: #3

2003-04:
19-6 (included stretch where we lost 4 of 5)
Eventual NCAA seed: #6

2008-09: 18-7 (included stretch where we lost 5 of 6)
Eventual NCAA seed: #3

2009-10: 24-1
Eventual NCAA seed: #1

This year: 20-5
Eventual NCAA seed: ?

Sky, please rise back up for now. If we're looking at 4-5 seed at the moment, so be it. We've got issues and concerns and whole lot of questions...but we're not dead yet. Ways to go...
