Syracuse Football: The Vacancy Sign Is Lit
Nolan Weidner wrote a piece today details all of the many openings that have popped up on the 2012 Syracuse Orange Football roster and what that might mean for the scholarships currently (and not currently) on the table.
Nolan confirms what Rahme first reported, that Dorian Graham is gone. "Graham has told SU coaches he's going to try his luck in the NFL draft."
He also confirms that #SHAMARKO and Chandler Jones are going to test the NFL Draft waters but will not hire agents, so, all hope is not lost. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Art Jones did the same thing and returned.
Phillip Thomas is technically suspended for a year but he's made it clear via social media that he's gone.
All of that means that SU will have at least three new scholarships available (Adam Harris' career-ending injury is the third).
The Orange currently has 20 verbal commitments in its Class of 2012, not counting linebacker Darius Parson, who has reopened his recruitment after being told by coaches there wasn’t room for him in the current class.
Nolan says that there are two other commits in danger of not making grades.
Assuming Marcus Sales returns and Jonny Miller does not, the Orange will have roughly 61 returning scholarship players heading into next season.
It's gonna be an interesting off-season.

Maybe he just doesn't want to play ehre anymore?
I dunno. Maybe he has had enough……odd, but possible.
Born in '87, Orange fan since '86

If I'm correct he will graduate this year so would have to be accepted to a grad program to play next year
University could have denied this
Apples and Oranges, but might be like Taj Smith
Who got to be old by college standards, graduated, and wanted to move on. So Stealth has a point, I think. Maybe it’s just time for him.

He can't catch for s**t, but he'll be a combine beast.

yeah I agree
Since the early 1990's I have not been able to get Mike Hopkins' bloody face out of my brain. I don't remember what game it was but I'll never forget that as my first memory of SU basketball. Mike Hopkins, bloody face, bloody nose, all for the love of Syracuse.
If Phil gets his head on straight, he could have Tanard Jackson type career

for failing drug tests?
he is on his way, no need to change his mindset.
Tanard, suspensions aside, is a top 8 FS in football
Phil could have the kind of impact Tanard does when he’s on the field

Agreed
As an Eagle fan, I would love to have Tanard Jackson in the secondary.

As an Eagles fan
You would be happy with Betty White in the secondary. :-)
Thanks, I’ll be here all weekend. Remember to tip your waitress.

I don't get it
Why can’t we keep a full roster of players? Is this a problem at other programs as well? This seems absolutely ridiculous, but it’s been a recurring theme since HCDM took over. What gives?

RESTORE 44!
To clarify
I mean that it seems like the # of scholarship players is usually lower than our competition, thus leading to depth problems, special teams issues, etc.

RESTORE 44!
85 is the limit.
If Sales and Miller stayed out of trouble last season, SU would have had 82.
84 if Smallwood and Broyld qualified.
So...
…that means that we’ll be 24 scholarships short?

RESTORE 44!
We have roughly 61 returning scholarship players
And 20 incoming ones, so about 81 or so depending. They may try to pick up a couple more – and Im not sure if Smallwood and Broyld are counted in that bunch.
We should be fine. But, this year – its the first real year that you will see a Doug Marrone born and bred team. Pretty much all of G-Robs players are gone, save for a handful (Chandler Jones and Ryan Nassib being two that are still here)
K4E
Maybe we can FINALLY get ourselves a kickoff specialist?????

Get Two of These Decisions
But Dorian Graham sounds like Paul Harris a few years back. No one has him on their radar, and now he’s going to spend his career and some traveling salesman for his football skills.
All about ACC (Plus SU & Pitt) football: http://atlanticcoastconvos.wordpress.com

Im sure Chandler Jones
will whiff the draft and be back – when his draft status is negligible. With all due respect, he was injured half the year so he has horrible stats, and he more or less disappeared in the last five games. Coming back for one more year will do wonders for him. I think he’s almost going to have to if he wants to be noticed.
As for Dorian Graham and Shamarko…um…? Youre lucky to be playing on a D1 college team?
I love the effort these guys put in for the Orange….but its still kind of a head scratcher.
Unlike basketball, almost all football players who test the waters enter the draft
The withdrawal deadline is way before pro days and the combine happen.
by DukePettyjohn on Dec 15, 2011 9:22 PM EST up reply actions
Art didn't test the waters (in the sense of what basketball players can do)
All he did was ask the NFL draft committee where he was projected to be picked, which any underclassman can do. The draft committee then gathers information based on what the teams project and offer the player a grade, ranging from 1st round to UDFA.
Maybe this is what you meant, but the way you said it makes it sound like Art talked to teams and/or worked out with them before deciding to come back.

If we get Shamarko and Chan back on D, which I almost expect since they’ll see their draft prospects skyrocket by doing so, I’ll be fine with the D side of the ball. Really will. I’m just curious as to the QB situation and the RB situation and whether or not Sales maybe pops back in.

Shamarko
I think that Shamarko has a future in the NFL. He reminds me a lot of Bob Sanders. He is fast, strong, vertically challenged, and has been hampered by the injury bug. I hope he comes back so he can get his degree and raise his draft profile for next year.
yeah except
Bob Sanders was a nationally known stud at safety for an Iowa team that was light years better than this SU team. He is only like Bob Sanders in height and weight and that he plays safety.
