Odds are that the Syracuse Orange basketball team will take over as the No. 1 team in the nation today. It will be the first time since a one-week run at the top spot late in 2010 and the first time they'll be No. 1 this early in the season since the 1989-90 year. The only other time they've been ranked No. 1 was at the beginning of the 1987-1988 season.
Let's take a look back at Syracuse's history of One-ness (using AP rank).
| Year | Weeks | Record | Final Record | Final Reg. Season Rank | NCAA Tournament |
| 2009 - 2010 | 1 | 1-1 | 30-5 | 3 | Sweet Sixteen |
| 1989 - 1990 | 6 | 10-1 | 26-7 | 6 | Sweet Sixteen |
| 1987 - 1988 | 2 | 2-2 | 26-9 | 9 | Second Round |
| Total | 9 | 13-3 |
Syracuse actually lost the first game it ever played as a No. 1, to North Carolina, but kept the top spot nonetheless. Let's hope the location of that team and the location of our next opponent (NC State) is not a bad omen of some kind.
