All the attention about the passing of Al Davis and his relative estrangement from the Syracuse football program (at least public estrangement, as I understand he was a quiet "friend of the program") made me wonder about the lack of attention paid to another Syracuse legend, Art Monk. Since Doc Gross took over the program it seems like 'Cuse Hall of Famer's have been used as a resource by the school in promotion, recruiting etc.
Syracuse titans like Csonka, Little, Brown, Mackey and even Joe Morris are mentioned frequently in association with the football program, but rarely if ever do I hear of Monk. Art Monk graduated in '79, played a key role for a few Superbowl Champion Washington Redskin teams and was inducted to Canton in 2008 (thanks wikipedia!). My memories of him were that he had amazing hands, rarely dropping passes, and always seemed to conduct himself like a class act on the field.
Anyone have any insight as to why his name is not mentioned along with the plethora of other Syracuse football giants? If there isn't a good reason for this oversight, can someone please ask Dr. Gross to bring Art into the fold?
