Syracuse Midnight Madness: Scouting The Legends Game
All due respect to Scoop Jardine, Kris Joseph and Baye Moussa Keita but the highlight of Friday's Midnight Madness event is officially the Legends Game, featuring some of the biggest stars to ever suit up for the Orange.
And Donte Greene.
The specific team line-ups have been settled and it's time to start over-analyzing how this exhibition will play out.
On one side, Derrick Coleman and Pearl Washington will be co-coaching Laz Sims, John Wallace, Donte Greene, Adrian Autry, Hakim Warrick and Lawrence Moten.
On the other side, Mike Hopkins and Billy Owens will be co-coaching Jonny Flynn, Wes Johnson, Gerry McNamara, Howard Triche and Roosevelt Bouie.
One team will be coached by Derrick Coleman and Pearl Washington. That team will consist of Lazarus Sims, John Wallace, Donte Greene, Adrian Autry, Hakim Warrick and Lawrence Moten.
The other team will be coached by Mike Hopkins and Billy Owens. That squad will include Jonny Flynn, Wes Johnson, Gerry McNamara, Howard Triche and Roosevelt Bouie.
- The first thing I wondered...who's gonna get the biggest pop during intros? Despite all the mega-wattage, it's still gonna be G-Mac. Just watch.
- Gerry McNamara, Jonny Flynn, Adrian Autry and Lazarus Sims all on the basketball court together. It's Mt. Guardsmore.
- If the game is tied with seconds remaining, can Pearl sub himself in for a half-court shot?
- Howard Triche? Are we just letting the relatives of current players play now? (someone whispers in ear). HOWARDS TRICHE IS BRANDON'S WHAT? WHY HASN'T ANY TV ANNOUNCER TOLD ME THIS BEFORE???
- Carmelo Anthony is "planning on coming" but is not confirmed. In other words, he's not coming.
- Andy Rautins and Eric Devendorf.are considered "possible additions" in the coming days. You're gonna tell me Andy and Devo have something better to do?
- What, Dave Bing has more important things to do? Oh, right.
- Early pick? I'm going with Team Hopkins-Owens. I stopped betting against Gerry McNamara years ago.
Who you picking?

I'd be okay with this
It would lead to more college bball & NHL coverage. It’s a win-win!
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-tip

This is gonna epic
so epic…
Since the early 1990's I have not been able to get Mike Hopkins' bloody face out of my brain. I don't remember what game it was but I'll never forget that as my first memory of SU basketball. Mike Hopkins, bloody face, bloody nose, all for the love of Syracuse.

Seems Hak could dominate if he wanted to,
Assuming Wes would be matched up on Donte, I don’t see how Bouie, who hasn’t played professionally in about 20 years, has much of a chance to stop one of the best athletes in the NBA.
My prediction...
This will be an epic defensive clinic, a post-graduate thesis on the intricacies of the 2-3 zone, no easy hoops, nothing but tough, physical play (circa SU/G’Town in the 80’s). Blood will spilled. And we will all rejoice in all it’s morbid glory. Ultimately, DC will go bananas, get T’d up, and GMAC will sink the free throws, the game’s only points… for the win!

Team Hopkins-Owens has a current NBA starting PG
That ought to be good for something, right? Do we really like Laz or Red’s chances of stopping JFlynn? I’m worried the old guys might literally get their ankles broken on a cross-over… and then when everyone else collapses to the rim to try to deal with that – kick-out to a wide open G Mac for 3…
can’t we just watch this every night instead of anything else ever?
"Starting" might be pushing it when describing Flynn.
I want him to succeed as much as anyone, but the NBA (or more specifically, Minnesota) has not been kind to him so far. Thank God he got out of there.
Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!
scouting report?
im not nearly knowledgable enough. but it would be fun to see a scouting report P-S style for this game, done as if all the players were in their prime. buller…bueller?
I like this
‘all in their prime’ premise!
Which team wins with all the players in their prime, including the four coaches?
My starting lineups:
Team DC/Pearl
pg Pearl
sg Moten
sf Wallace
pf Hak
c DC
bench: Autry, Sims
Team Hop/BillyO
pg Flynn
sg GMac
sf Wes
pf BillyO
c Bouie
bench: Hop, Triche
Yup, gotta go with DC/Pearl, unless Melo decides to show up and is reunited with GMac on Hop/BillyO.

How will they top this?
Maybe next year, Gmac, Devo, Rautins, Jason Cipolla, Marius Janulis, and Craig Forth… battle Kueth Duany and various other Duany family members.

Never bet against Final Four participant Duany Duany

And don't forget...
Bil (Eastern Illinois) and sisters Nyagon (Bradley) and Nok (Georgetown).

Let’s be honest, we should forget Nok.

Her Georgetown education is really the only Nok on the Duany family

It's hard to root against Keuth, but...
…with Nok there – we’ve got our team of villains.

i'm going team hop/billy
unless they play 6 on 5, which it appears they might.
I'm going with Team Hopkins-Owens
because they have Roosevelt Bouie, a true big man, patrolling the paint.
Granted, Bouie is a seasoned 53 year old big man and his legendary ‘fro is just a memory, but I’m optimistic that he can still take care of business down low.
I think DC and Pearl better get on the phone with Danny Schayes and Rony Seikaly stat.
I like DC and Pearl
Just got three guys who actually played together, so we’ll see if they still have the chemistry of those early 90’s teams
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
Team Moten/Autry/Wallace will be winning when Donte Green goes down with injury
Suddenly Melo’s music hits (he has music, right?) and he appears to a standing ovation by the Carrier Dome faithful. He takes Donte’s place, only to then pull out the chair from under Derrick Coleman and turn on Hakim Warrick via a steel chair shot to the head. G-Mac then hits a trey over the laid out Warrick for the win. Book it.
GMac and Flynn
with Wes at the wing? How can you pick against that?
May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.
