2013: Return of the 4 star recruit?
Yeah, we havent had a 4 star recruit in a couple years - maybe 3 now? The last one we had playing for us graduated last year with Delone Carter. Definitely correct me if Im wrong on that.
But the fact of the matter is the stink of GERG has been mostly whiffed away, the ship has been righted, and we are sailing in the right direction. The kids are going to notice. We are going to be playing in the ACC and opening up the southern pipeline even more, let alone other recruits now interested in an ACC school as opposed to the BE.
I dont want to speak ahead of shcedule, but I think we are going to have back to back bowl games for the first time since the late 1990's McNabb era.
I think after this year recruiting and landing 4 star recruits will become more of the rule than the exception if things hold.
What does the Nunes nation think? There's a hell of a lot of variables out there, but I think we can all agree on the fact that stud recruits weren't going to be interested in going to a school that was a perennial loser, so we have cleared the first big hurdle. The second one is getting consistency, and that's where getting better athletes starts coming into play. When do you see the 3rd Golden Age of Cuse starting?

Currently some 4 stars with interest
… This is according to ESPN, so who knows. Also do not know who will get in the mix late or how the ACC move effects.
But the problems with all these recruits who have not yet committed is they all list about 20 – 25 teams as being considered, incl. a lot of big time programs. So it is a crap shoot.
Marquis Spruill was a 4 star, same with Marcus Sales

Also
Per Scout:
Marcus Sales (Four-Stars) – 2008
Averin Collier (Four Stars) – 2008
Doug Hogue (Four Stars) – 2007
Rivals same for Sales & Collier, but replace Hogue with Mikhail Marinovich (Four Stars) – 2008
I knew Sales was 4-Star
But not the rest. Honestly, though, in following college sports more closely over the last few years, I don’t really get excited about any recruit until they step onto campus and start to put up numbers in games that count. And that goes for any sport.

Same here
Not after the Roberts, Watkins, McCroskey, Nichols class where all I heard is how we were going to be one of the best in the country. Whoops. At least there were 3 solid starters.
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

Worst class EVER.
EVER.
Headcases. Team chemistry was awful and I think Gmac as the leader of the team had to shoulder some blame there as well.
GMac
Yes and no. I mean, there’s only so much he can do. And I’m sure he tried, but he can’t make people listen either. I’ll admit, though, when Roberts and Watkins were freshmen, I was among those who thought that SU would have the best front line in the country by the time they were juniors. And I thought that Watkins would shatter the career blocks record. Roberts at least had half an excuse in that he had the knee injury and was never really able to overcome it. McCroskey was just a bad apple. The second coming of Deshaun Williams.
Nichols, though, was a solid player and a good kid. He wasn’t the type of player you could built a great team around, but he knew that he was the team’s best option and worked his butt off to try to live up to it. If a kid is willing to work, that’s all you can ask for.
To me the worst class ever was the one with Josh and Dayshawn Wright. When you only have a two player class, you can’t afford for them to both be busts. I remember going up to see Syracuse play Siena in Albany their freshman year and Dayshawn made a sick baseline spin move. I was excited about his future with the Orange. too bad there wasn’t one. I never found out why he left. Does anyone know?

I’m the same way. I typically reserve until they are on the court or field, but those star ratings do have some merit to them.
I think its much more of a barometer of the program’s direction that Im interested in. Usually a 4 star recruit is someone whos touted as “Div1-ready” meaning they dont need a lot of work in getting up to speed with Div1 play, and a 5 star being someone who could start as a freshman most likely.
3 stars and below I see as a work in progress, where they may need a bit of work and should perform well by their junior/senior year.
I still think the ability to offer immediate playing time to good talent is a real position of strength we have right now in recruiting.
I think
We are still in the running for a 4 star this year, per scout, 4 star tight end Ron Thompson is expressing high interest in the program. Its between us and Indiana or Michigan….hopefully Wheatley can work his Michigan Magic.
We'll get the big name recruits when....
the football program starts having consistent success. Once Marrone is able to consistently be in the top 25 with the talent he has available, recruits will start choosing this team. That’s the big catch 22 of college sports… success brings higher level recruits, but how do you get better without better talent? Can Marrone do what Boeheim and Desko have done in their respective sports? One big plus for Marrone is his NFL connection and his pro-style offensive style… any kid who has been through this program will be “pro-ready” when he graduates, and the scouts love these type of guys… they’ve already proven they can excel in this system and are not as high a risk as a kid coming out of a spread or other “high-octane” offense. I guess only time will tell… he needs at least 2 more years to see what the trend in recruiting will produce.
