I don’t understand how one person can be dictator over your son’s future."

So says Tom Savage's father in the CBS CFB blog entry, referring to Greg Schiano's adding Miami, Florida, Florida State and Michigan to the list of schools that Savage won't be allowed to transfer to if Schiano has his way.

That ticking sound is the Rutgers football program getting ready to implode.

I might understand

If those teams were all future Rutgers opponents. I think SU has a similar transfer policy. But I think only Miami is on their upcoming schedule.

Can he transfer to UNC Central?

I just wanna tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

or

Teams Greg may want to coach at if a job opens up in the next three years haha

it’s a double-edge sword. Not only is Savage barred from transferring to schools that won’t ever be on Rutgers’ schedule (any team that has been ranked in the top-50); he’s also not allowed to transfer to any schools that Rutgers may play in the future (every low-level FBS and FCS team out there).

Id love to see a player

challenge this in court, because its pretty much a form of indentured servitude by limiting options like this. Since when is being on a college sports team a contractual obligation?

We pay you with room and board, and you work for us. And you cant get out of the contract very easily at all.

Sounds kind of familiar.

Especially when you consider

the fact that the school isn’t comitted to you for four years and can pull a player’s scholarship for no good reason at the end of an academic year.

well they are

supposed to have a reason, but its easy to make one up

I can see

the teams they will play, but Miami isnt on Rutgers sch until 2019 or something. I would take them to court over that.

I'm not well versed on the rules of transferring, etc

but how can Schiano bar Savage from talking to particular schools? What power/right/leverage does he have to do this? When they sign to go to the school is there some clause about paying back tuition or something? And if that’s the case why does it seem like Schiano’s just adding schools now to that list willy nilly?

My understanding is

that in order for a player to transfer, the school has to release him from his scholarship so they can play at that school. Coaches can refuse to release a player from scholarship if he doesn’t want them going to a certain school. Most Coaches will say no to a kid wanting to transfer to a conference rival, for example.

The other thing is

coaches are allowed to do this. Dan Mullen was allowed to leave UF to coach at miss st who they played. It happens all the time. And a transfer player has to sit out a year. Not true for coaches.

by ryanwk628 on Jan 25, 2011 5:25 PM EST reply actions

Personally

I dont even understand the rule of them having to sit out a year. What, is it some sort of punishment? Who cares? Let the kids play. Were kids just willy-nilly transferring all over the place every year before it was in place? I guess I dont get the genesis of this rule.

Its kind of disgusting, college kids have to abide by more (NCAA)rules (recruiting, transferring, the draft) than NBA players do in their professional careers !!!!!!!!

The rules are definitely put in place for the benefit of the Div1 School overlords and not really designed to have the players best interests at heart.

What are some rules that are obviously in the schools best interest and not the players?
