Let me preface this rant by saying that, this is coming from a football-first 'cuse fan. Pitt is the only remaining BE team we have not beaten in the football since before the GRE and whooped us bad in the last two outings under HCDM, so naturally when hoops comes around I'm looking for some extra payback in some form already. But this is further compounded by the fact that, well, Pitt has owned us as much as one could reasonably expect to be owned on the basketball court too. And as unnacceptable as any loss may be, I had already rationalized in my mind in every which way going into last nights game that losing was not the end of the world. Those rationalizations included, but were not limited to: it was tough road game vs a top 5 team, KJo being out, a 'good loss' will help a pay divedends down the road, no one will get through the Big East unscathed, Pitt's not really our rival and will crash and burn in the tourney...etc etc etc. In other words, I was at peace with what went down last night. This, even with going down 19-0 at the start, which nearly a) gave this 28-yo a heart attack and b) NEARLY forced an unprecedented move on my part to turn off the TV during a nationally televised 'cuse sporting event. As it was, late in the 2nd half, the game was playing out exactly as most expected.
And then it happend....
Pitt fans started up the "overrated" chants. F off you a**monkeys! Are you F-ing serious?!?!?! F those F-ing MORONS. Ok, seriously, I know that was a lot of F's to handle there, and y'know what, I thought chanting overrated was cool too once upon a time. When I was in 5th grade, before I started to develop rational thought. And I'd expect that out of, say, those jihadists at G'town, inbreds at L'ville or WVU and maybe even a stinker like Rutgers or USF on the verge of a massive upset. I mean, wouldn't you like to be able to go around and brag that you just beat up the #3 team in all the land? Apparently Pitt fans don't. I guess they didn't realize that they were ranked #4, favored and playing at home. So in effect, by beating overrated Syracuse, Pitt must be overrated too. I mean, they did lose to a mediocre Tennessee (11-6) team after all. So maybe that's what they were trying to point out to Dukie V and the rest of the college basketball world? Good job Pitt fans. Way to represent the conference, you toolboxes.
Truly, I'm a guy who has criticized this SU team to everyone I know up until the Big East sched started. And I'm not one to get too caught up in rankings, but at this point we're deserving of as much credit as anyone. So if we had won after going down 19-0 to start, who's to say we're not the best team in the country? Has any team won after being down by so many to start the game, let alone to a top 5 team on the road? Obviously thats not what happened, but coming all the way back to tie it up is impressive on it's own, regardless of the final outcome. My hope is that this is the kind of loss that we bounce back from and come out and dominate the next game because of it. I think it will. And I know that Pitt is not our rival or a team we should really care that much about. So in the end, good game Pitt basketball players. You deserved to win, were expected to win, and thats exactly what happened. It's just too bad your fanbase is a collection of retards though.
I know this all was mentioned before by others on various comments and such, so I'm truly sorry if this sounds repetative...but now I can quit brooding and look forward to 'nova.
