What will it take for a week 2 win? What would it mean?
What will it take? A lot of things not in any particular order:
1. Take the crowd out of the game
2. Control the clock
3. Minimize mistakes on offense
4. run early to open up Play Action against a soft secondary.
5. Use Hogue or Smith to spy on Locker. Advantage of having former RBs at LB could be big in this regard.
What would a W mean
1. Husky stadium is an absolutely awful place to play as a visitor. The crowd will be fired up to get the first win on the board after the loss last week and overall this stadium is consistently a top 5 toughest place to play deal. So it would be a tremendous road win for SU.
2. It would be a good win for the Big East
3. Both of these points would be reduced given it would mean UW is 0-2 to start the season.
I feel good about SU's chances, thinking back to the PSU game as a comparable opponent - though I don't think UW is quite as skilled overall offensively, they have a comparable or purely better QB. Also a tougher place to play, but I think the PSU game will serve as a good experience for SU in this game.

I agree
Without getting too specific, I think the best way to take the crowd out of it is to play great defense the whole game. PAC-10 teams, even the bad ones (which is most of the conference, mwhahaha), are used to being able to score at will. Make UW go 3-and-out a few times by forcing Locker to beat us with his arm and the crowd will be shellshocked.
Quite simply, if our Defense does its thing, and our offense doesn’t commit too many turnovers, we will dominate ToP and have a chance to eek out a win. Regardless of how good UW is or isn’t, we beat another BCS team in their stadium, it’ll be a monster victory for our team and the conference.
GO ORANGE
Your
Right on when you say it will be good for the big east, but thats what sucks about college football is statements like that! I could care less what other teams in my confrence do, if one of them wins a game, I’m suppose to be happy because they brought reputation to my confrence and that can help in many different ways. GARBAGE I say. Lol. I agree with what you say. This is my main thing, Make your extra points. No 2 fumbles and 1 interception Nassib. Bailey, you hang on to the ball. Nassib needs to be more careful with his throws to. If they do that and play tuff defense and SHOW UP in a tuff environment with the cards stacked against them, then they got a lot of my respect unless they lose to either maine or colgate, but i’m quite sure the Bville Varsity team from last year would give them a game. It doesn't matter what sport it is - you are always better when you are facing better competition
Certainly in the NCAA the illusion of ‘better competition’ is out there more then the real thing since there are so many schools. But having a strong conference standing allows for perceptions to change, and in the NCAA perception is reality more so then in other places.
The stronger the Big East is, the better each SU win is, the stronger the recruiting opportunities become, the stronger the program develops.
Over at the UW Site...
I have been bickering with some UW fans over at one of their sites… and let me tell you… They are expecting a Blow Out victory over the Orange… Frankly, they are very arrogant, and over-confident after losing a game they were up early in, choked big-time in the 2nd half, and their ‘Heisman QB’ was referred to as ‘Deer in the Headlights Jake’… THEIR words, not mine…. Oh, and it was the Refs that beat them, not BYU…. The way they talk, you would thing their program is a perennial Top 10 Team with a long string of Bowl appearances…
If their Coaches, and Team is as irrationally optimistic as their Fans… They are ripe to get beat… They are expecting the SU Team that they beat 42-12 a couple years ago when GRob was coaching… Did I say coaching… I meant standing on the sidelines looking befuddled…
After dealing with the delusional UW Fans… I want an SU win even more… GO ORANGE!

Well....
They “should” beat SU by at least one possession.
Vegas line: WU -14
I think going on the road to the west coast, and having the defense keeping SU in the game by forcing WU to be one-dimensional on offense would be a moral victory in all honestly.
Expecting SU to win this game is optimistic at best. Of course SU “can” win, any team can win, but seriously, SU would have to play way over the heads in a notoriously difficult road house.
Go Orange(men)!
UW Scared...
Take a look at their first part of the schedule:
1.) The Fighting Mormons in Provo
2.) us
3.) Nebraska
4.)@USC
5.) Arizona State
6.) @ Oregon State
If they don’t beat us… then they could start the season 1-5 and there goes Lockers Heisman bid. They are scared therefore they NEED a blowout Victory.
By the way we are 1-11-1 on the West Coast since 1964. You don’t think Marrone is using that has motivation to be that team to get win #2!
Where is this 1-11-1 stat coming from?
When I look at the scores, I see the following:
1964— Loss @ Oregon State
1965—Loss @ UCLA
1967—Win @ UCLA
1968—Loss @ Cal
1972—Loss @ Washington
1977—Loss @ OSU
2002—Loss @ BYU
That’s 1-6. What am I missing?
Plus, we beat UCLA in 1962 and 1963. And we beat Oregon St. away in 1961. So if we are counting the 1960’s, we might as well pretend we are 4-6.
And what about our bowl games? Do Hawaii and Phoenix count? Won the Aloha Bowl in 1990 over Arizona St, the Fiesta Bowl in 1992 over Colorado. Lost the 1997 Fiesta Bowl to KSU, but won the rematch Insight bowl against them in 2001. If we count those, we are 7-7 on that general side of the USA.
Interesting notes: (1) we sure did play Pac 10 teams a lot in the 1960’s. Wow. (2) Look at the early 1960’s… we played a lot of games in the NYC region. One a year.

I don't know
I think the 1-11-1 stat is worthless, other than it might motivate our team, in that they can further make a statement that this years team is different.
Your post also got me thinking about what beating a PAC-10 team on their own turf would mean for the conference. Obviously, a huge win for Syracuse. For the Big East, this would help ease the pain of the horrid road showing last week. A win here should be looked at as being on par with Cincy winning @ Oregon St. last season. At least, if we are to believe any of the hype surrounding Locker. In the end, people will probably just say “eh, I guess UW isn’t any good after all.”
Speaking of Oregon St., L’ville makes that roadtrip next week. Yecch.
GO ORANGE
Never said it was worthy
Just wondering whether it is true.
The more interesting thing is how often we played Pac 10 teams in the 1960’s and how often we played a home game in NYC back then.
Look at our schedules from some years in the 1960’s too… we would play a Pac 10 school, a Big 10 school, Holy Cross, and then the Eastern powers. We never have been much about crap schedules, that’s for sure.
Those kind of stats....
….mean nothing to me. Unless the data is recent, I don’t see how it’s relevant. What does the 1962 Syracuse team have to do with the 2010 Syracuse team. Most of the fathers of the players on the current team weren’t even alive in 1962, so what good does it do to extrapolate information from that era when trying to imply relevance to this era? I’m not saying that’s what you’re trying to do ezcuse, I’m just saying in general that I hate when I see things like that. Like, you’ll be watching a game and they’ll say, “College X hasn’t won at College Y in almost 40 years.” So your first thought is, wow, what a mismatch. But then you see that College X has only played at College Y three times over those 40 years, and you kind of roll your eyes.
I like that Marrone took them out early to adjust to the time change. As long as we play good defense and minimize mistakes on offense and special teams, we can absolutely hang with the Huskies.
"(BARF)" - Donovan McNabb, during his game winning drive against Virginia Tech in 1998
So we are clear, HCDM's record on the west coast is 0-0
As far as I’m concerned, that’s all that matters.
Who Knows...
Maybe they count Nebraska, Texas and Baylor part of the “west-coast” trip… is it any game west of the Mississippi River? Good point about bowl games. I agree, throw the records out the window.
