Syracuse 29, Akron 3 Post-Game Discussion Thread

There will be time for nitpicking on Monday.  For now, Syracuse Football is 1-0, scored 29 points in a game, blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown and held their opponent to 3 points.  How many times have you been able to say all that in the last five years?

Big East Title...we wantz it.

Go on the road, play an inferior team, and take care of business by whooping them by four touchdowns. Hell yeah I’ll take it. I’ll save my nitpicking for later. THIS is how you start off a season. We beat our MAC team by more points than Florida beat theirs, and they were at home. Very solid win, boys. Bring on Washington!

theres been a few good plkayers coming out of hofstra lately

marcus colston first comes to mind there a couple more recievers just cant think of them right now

Ask the Saints

about Hofstra. Colston came out of there and is their number 1 WR

+1

Yeah, had no idea – he could be a major weapon, especially in the red zone.

I watched a lot of football this weekend....

we looked pretty damn good, even against a lesser team. We dominated this game. Now for the negatives,

Nassib does stretch the field, however, when he felt the pressure he made risky throws, he could have easily had 3 pics today, in addition to his fumble. Hope that was just nervousness.

That fade to chew, and post to provo were beautiful throws Paulus doesnt make. VERY EXCITED about this year.

YANKEE BOWL OR BUST!!!!

The mistakes he made were very very typical mistakes you see from a “rookie” QB. The key is to see if, and how, he improves.

by wildcatlh on Sep 4, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets see what they do against Washington

We’ll see how that defense stacks up when they face Jake Locker. Solid workman like win.

by upstateNYYFan1984 on Sep 4, 2010 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Very solid game overall

The two main concerns I had were Mike Holmes muffing/looking lost on almost every punt return and 2 out of the 4 PAT kicks were missed/botched. Those should be easy things to correct in practice though. Overall, great game, stellar defense, and bring on Washington!!!!

I know I'm late on it...

…but Aaron Weaver can BALL. Nothing against Hofstra, but how did he end up there and not at a bigger school?

by MrLebowski7 on Sep 4, 2010 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

This is the kind of recruit that SU needs to specialize in. Someone that fly’s under the radar but is actually very talented and coachable. I believe there are thousands of great football players that go unrecruited by the major schools or who are ranked lower than they should be.

by Tom Mitchell on Sep 4, 2010 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

[Typical fan]

But they only have 1 or 2 stars from Rivals! Why would they recruit this guy? We should only be getting 4 and 5 star guys!

Sounds like Jim Boeheim’s M.O.

(i suppose this means I’m comparing Weaver and Wesley Johnson)

by DRBSouthington on Sep 5, 2010 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Sean hit the nail on the head

Lots to nitpick about but overall a dominant performance by a team in a conference that has been far from dominant.

We’ve got work to do, but you can’t tell me that you aren’t expecting a heck of a game up in Washington.

The real issue is this...

We went to the game…

What happened to Otto?….he looks like a tangerine!!! He lost like 50 pounds….

Zippy was actually cooler than I expected….

4.5 wins is still the over/under on the season….

1-0 ATS…

Meanwhile

Since I still remember the people who (at least initially, before HCDM won them over) wanted Turner Gill to take over in ’08:

North Dakota State 6, Kansas 3

Ouch.

by wildcatlh on Sep 4, 2010 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

still think

Turner Gill, Skip Holtz, or Tommy Tubberville would have been better choices……………….however his tenure is still young, and I hope HCDM can make me a beleiver

by 86trash on Sep 5, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

What does he need to do to make you a believer?

Not meant to be confrontational, but a serious question. Do we have to go to a bowl game this year? I guarantee you that none of those other coaches would have done much better than 4-8 last year either, btw. Not saying Marrone is the guy for the job, but I THINK that he is. I like what he’s all about, in terms of philosophy, toughness, etc.

Gill, Holtz and Tubberville would have used this is a step up.

Coaching at Syracuse has been HCDM’s dream and, as long as the university will have him, he will be there. I like that.

by voteprime on Sep 5, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you

I DO think Marrone is the guy for the job. That is a huge reason why.

As always,

we are in agreement once again.

by voteprime on Sep 5, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not overly concerned with a coach using us as a step up...

… as long as they succeeded in their goal, we’d be a much better team when they left, and we could presumably either poach one of the new guy’s coordinators or make a lower-risk hire with the next guy (I think HCDM will work out, but with no previous college head coaching experience and several years removed from the college game, he was a high-risk hire).

by drothgery on Sep 5, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

yea i guess?

Turner Gill just lost to North Dakota State. Tech is in a game with southern methodist 28-14 in the 3rd. I think Marrone will be just fine. Drothgery, ask Louisville if they are better off since Petrino left. then ask Penn State how longevity has worked for them?

by shamMARKED4death on Sep 5, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I didn’t think to add a qualifier ‘assuming the coach who used us as a stepping stone isn’t a jerk about leaving, and so goes shortly after the end of the regular season, and assuming we don’t make a disastrous call on the next guy’. Besides, Louisville is not Syracuse. If the Orange had been coming off of a BCS bowl win and the guy we hired instead of GERG was hired away, we would not have hired Krags.

HCDM almost certainly wants to be head coach at SU until he retires. But JoePa was probably the only coach in all of college football that could avoid being fired at an school of PSU’s prominence after 2000-2004 (one winning season in five years); situations nowhere near as bad got Bobby Bowden and Phillip Fulmer and Tommy Tubberville forced out.

by drothgery on Sep 5, 2010 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

question:

With Cincy falling to Fresno State last night Cuse is the only team in the BE to beat a D-1A opponent this weekend (unless Coast Carolina is also D-1A). Not wanting to look to far ahead , or have unrealistic expectations is it wrong to start the “we’re number 1” chants?

by SUMB44 on Sep 5, 2010 9:21 AM EDT reply actions

You've seen it before

It’s just that under GERG, it was more likely there would be a 1 on the left at the end of the season than after week 1.

by drothgery on Sep 5, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't watch the game

but thanks to Twitter, I get that joke!

by voteprime on Sep 5, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

So here's the deal

We’re 1-0 for the first time in a long time. Doug Marrone has 5 wins already, which means in 13 games he is already halfway to the win total of “he who shall not be named”

Our defense looks TOUGH. Seriously, we could have one of the top 20 defenses in the country if they play anything like they did yesterday for the rest of the season. I think we stay competitive against almost everybody b/c we shouldn’t be giving up 40 points per game anymore. So even if the offense has some growing up to do, they shouldn’t be forced to get points back quickly.

It’s crazy to think that in just 2 years we’ve gone from not being able to stop anyone to a VERY physical defense.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Sep 5, 2010 10:50 AM EDT reply actions

I'll take a beat down of Akron any day of the week

Yes, there are things to work on, but look where we are compared to just a couple years ago. Agreed that the D looks great and will be good to see what they do against a better team. And how about Van Chew!

Anyone else notice Nassib gimping around after that run at the end of the game?

So pumped to see the Orange next week in Seattle. Sean, tailgate starts around 7:00 am?

by SF Cuse on Sep 5, 2010 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

I didn't get to see the game.

But looking at the score says our defense isn’t entirely bad. And that’s probably the most important thing.

by adselver15 on Sep 5, 2010 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

They were absolutely dominant

Granted, it’s against Akron…so I’m not going to go nuts. But they only scored 3 points because they recovered a Nassib fumble at the Syracuse 18 yard line, and promptly went 3 and out.

I consider it to be major progress, given that Akron scored 42 points IN OUR BUILDING two years ago (a game I was at, unfortunately). Yes, the Akron players have changed since then…but it’s still progress. They couldn’t do anything yesterday against our defense. We lost the turnover battle 0-3, and STILL shut them out (basically).

Something tells me

that we have probably only one more year after this one with Scott Shafer. This guy has SEC d coordinator written all over. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before he gets another shot at a huge university. I think it’s obvious now that the Michigan fiasco couldn’t have been all his fault and that a lot of the blame should be shouldered by Rich Rod.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Sep 5, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Heh

As if that’s a shock! I love how after yesterday’s game, they are saying “Rich Rod has it turned around” and “he may have found his next great QB!” Um…didn’t they say that about Tate Forcier last year, when they won their first few games? People need to get off of Michigan’s nuts. That program hasn’t been relevant for years…almost as long as Syracuse, now that you think about it.

You’re totally right about Shafer, though. He has proven to be an outstanding defensive coordinator, and the fact that Rich Rod made him a scapegoat and swapped him out with Greg Robinson (!) just shows how dumb Rodriguez is.

don’t ask for something, u might get it". tactfully put, i would have some trepidation about traveling 3 grand miles and taking on a team in their home stadium with probably the best opton qb-oops dual threat qb in college football ranks.it will be a much more realistic chance to evaluate this team.

Because that's what we're going to run into in exactly how many Big East games?

Playing a good team out west is not something an East Coast team should really be doing very often (ask Cinci and Pitt about why), but losing such a game does not immediately signify DOOM.

Bar-Hats are fairly easy to find if you know where to look

If you google “Syracuse Bar Hat” you can find several places that sell them.

I personally bought mine at http://www.thecollegeshack.com

They have a great selection of college sports gear and good service.

I have a feeling

that Syracuse could be actually very solid if the offensive line can hold up. Ryan Nassib certainly has potential and I looked at the stat sheets and came to the conclusion that he can’t handle pressure (one INT and two fumbles) but if he’s given time he can throw for 250 yards and a few scores. The offensive line will be winning and losing games for the ’Cuse this year. If they hold up, we will be going to a bowl, and probably a decent one to boot.

Post-game thoughts

#1… was at game… Syracuse section was louder than the rest of the stadium. Akron can be disappointed in losing, but the fans should be embarrassed for their own performance. 1,000 people shouldn’t make more noise than 14,000.

#2… defense looked great all game. A lot of plays stopped just short of first downs. Nothing to be concerned with.

#3… kind of hoped that our o-line would open up bigger holes, but we were mostly running up the middle with Carter. Not sure we called any plays for him that went outside the tackles. Bailey had a few. Any time you get 150+ yards rushing, no complaints. As always, need to work on the turnovers.

#4… Holmes should not be returning punts. Give it to someone who can focus on that. I don’t care who. Someone who is not on the 2 deep anywhere. That way, Long and whomever it is can practice. The wind was tough for everyone—but I think we can do better. It stinks when you are hoping that your punt returner does not eve try to fair catch it.

#5… Great game all around though. I thought the play calling was fine. Going for the TD at the end of the first half was completely new for our program. Coach P never quite liked being aggressive (at all, but certainly after 1998). G-Rob never had anything to be aggressive with. Maybe if he reviewed the film, he would have determined that he should have been aggressive.

A lot to be happy with. We won a game we were “supposed to win.” We won a road game—a rare accomplishment in the Coach P era. We won a game despite losing the turnover battle. We won a game with a QB making his first start in front of a generally new offensive line, with a lot of new receivers. Given the woeful Big East showing against FBS opponents (we were the only one that won) and the upsets by FCS teams, take it and run.

As for Washington, we’ll see. Maybe they come out flat because the championship picture just got real cloudy. Maybe they come out extra fired up. Who knows? But what I do know is that we are not going to get any big name team with FEWER injured players. These are the games to make statements. I’ll take a Minnesota-like performance (close loss), but let’s hope for a Northwestern-like win!!!

by ezcuse on Sep 5, 2010 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

We can't afford a loss this early.

Let’s save those for the Big East season; we can only afford 5 losses and I have little confidence against Pitt, WVU, Cincy, and Boston College.

I MISSED IT!!

I live in MD and the game wasnt on TV here.. either way, its great that we got the win, but i cant help but not to be excited, playing Akron really dosnt say much and lets face it, the big east as a whole didnt say much… i just dont know if SU will ever get the BEAST OF THE EAST status back, well at least in football… go Jimmy B!! But I’m a die hard and I have faith in Marone so as always I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Couple of questions though….

How did carter do? and did Loeb get in the game? How’d Nassib do?
