The Iroquois Have Been Shut Out...
...but not on the field of play. According to the open letter penned below by the Nationals team itself, the United Kingdom refused to allow the squad to travel on their indigenous passports. However you feel about this issue, I have to say that I respect these guys for refusing to back down and for holding true to their identity. That said, in the age of air travel restrictions, what good is your "own" passport if you can barely use it? It's a messy situation all around.

Their hand made passports are outdated.
“We continue to work to upgrade our documentation to a level of security consistent with the requirements of an increasingly security-conscious world. Though we are unable to travel to the United Kingdom to participate in the world lacrosse championships, the team and the Haudenosaunee nations will continue to pursue solutions so that we may continue with our global development in many respects.”
As soon as they can acquire Haudenosaunee passports with RF chips and modern security features, they’ll be back in business.
It was never an issue of national sovereignty. Just improper paperwork.
True
But I think that in a way it’s good that this happened, because it raised awareness that this group even still exists as a quasi-sovereign entity. At least that’s how I see it!

Yes, but it sucked for Sid and Cody
and all the other team members who wanted a run at the title this year.
Oren Lyons, the author of the letter, spoke in one of my classes last year
He talked about the identity of the Haudenosaunee people and the importance of it that they keep that identity. While I understand their motives, they need to realize they aren’t recognized as a country and this is a major issue. There has to be a way to compromise.
Well, what do you know...
Iroquois spend $1.5 million to upgrade passports:
The Iroquois lacrosse players who refused to travel on passports issued by the U.S. and Canada are set to travel overseas next year and this time around they will be using newly issued passports the Onondaga Nation says will meet “every international security measure” currently in place. Oren Lyons of The Onondaga Nation tells CNYcentral the Nation has spent $1.5 million to upgrade the Confederacy-issued passports.
The upgrades to meet strict security guidelines put in place after the 9/11 terror attacks were not ready in time to allow the team to fly to the United Kingdom to compete in the World Lacrosse Championship Games. The team, including 5 players from Central New York, returned from New York City over the weekend.
The Onondaga Nation says the team is due overseas again next May, at the Lacrosse Championships in the Czech Republic – and plans to use the new passports for that trip. The Nation developed the new passports with the Siemens Corporation which is doing work on them in Germany.

Well there you go
Nice find on that story – I’m glad that they got their act together and created these new passports, because the kids deserve a chance to play. Hopefully this can be a happy ending, but you’re right, it sucks for this year’s team.

I know this sucked for the SU boys
but, after reading Ryan’s fanshots on the whole situation, this might be a good thing for them.
Oh, and Rec on the story find.
Go Orange(men)!
If they already had this project in the works (it just “wasn’t ready”) and they knew it wasn’t ready, why all the BS making the kids wait at the effing airport for a week when they knew this would happen? Why raise awareness, if they were already in the process of caving and following procedure?
Well, just that
to raise awareness. Got people talking about their plight and whatnot.
Go Orange(men)!
I hope all those kids knew ahead of times they were pawns
and weren’t actually expecting to travel to England and play in a cool lacrosse tournament…
I doubt it
They seem like great kids, but yeah, they were pawns and probably didn’t even know it.
Actually they were probably told some propaganda story about defending their culture’s pride overseas or something.
Go Orange(men)!
what a terrible situation
