Nichols, Watkins Land Summer Gigs With The NBA

via blog.syracuse.com

You already knew Wes Johnson and Andy Rautins would be spending their summers in the NBA Summer League.  The question was whether or not they'd be joined by any familiar faces...perhaps not familiar to them but certainly familiar to us.

So far, we can expect to see two blasts from the recent past pop back up for Summer League, one in each of them.

Ridiculous Upside has a handy-dandy roster list for all of the Vegas Summer League teams and Syracuse fans will recognize one guy in particular added to the Portland roster.

Demetris Nichols, last seen plating in France for something called BCM Gravelines Dunkerque Grand Littoral after approximately 47 different NBA and NBDL stops, will suit up for Portland in the Vegas League.  The Blazers (who have the least user-friendly website I've seen in a while) will play Wes, Jonny and the rest of the Timberwolves on 7/17.

Meanwhile over in the Orlando Summer League, the Pacers will be featuring a certain Darryl Watkins amongst their players. Watkins spent brief time with the Kings, Clippers, Spurs & Cavs and most recently played for TianJin Rongcheng in China.  The Orlando league goes first, playing between July 5th and 9th.

when you can cut and paste it from 4 years ago.

And Devo?

I wonder if he comes back to play some summer league games. Or if Arinze is healed enough to give it a shot.

Darryl Watkins

…such a missed opportunity to have a “Darryl Watkins wants you at Watkins Glen! Buy a Nationwide Series race ticket and receive two free tickets to a future Syracuse basketball game” promotion. After he graduated to avoid NCAA violations, of course.

they brought in Devo on drums as a last minute replacement

after McCroskey quit the band.

Or maybe he exploded on stage, Spinal Tap-style.

Why isnt this a yearly thing?

We could make guesses as to who plays what position in the band…

Like next year, KJ is lead singer, RickJack is on drums, Scoop is lead guitar and…Fab Melo on Bass?

See the problem with the team in the photo above?

No lead singer. Explains a lot about the season – just a band looking for a lead singer.

The Blazers (who have the least user-friendly website I’ve seen in a while)

Wow, that really is a mess. I’d always thought NBA teams used some kind of template and they all were basically the same. Portland decided to break the mold. And failed.

Also, this photo looks like Greg Oden has gone blind in his old age and has a personal guide to help him get around.

One of the key contests in Syracuse's march to the national championship in 1959 was a titanic clash with unbeaten Penn State on Nov. 7, 1959 in University Park, PA. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 7 and the Orangemen No. 4.

The 20-18 victory propelled Syracuse to the No. 1 in both the AP and UPI polls which they held for the remainder of the season to claim the consensus National Championship. This is the Universal Newsreel account of that contest.
