Maybe Paul Tagliabue is exactly what is needed in Providence. I think the Big 10 is getting cold feet. They can't lose by adding, but they are afraid that they don't win by doing so. Whichever direction they move is going to lead to cataclysmic changes that could lead to the Big 10 losing.
Take Nebraska only... now the feeding frenzy on the Big 12 starts a chain reaction. Take Pitt only... same with Big East. Take 3? Take 5? Pros and cons.
The best news for the Big East is the Big 10 moving slowly. This gives the conference time to change things. Can Pitt, Syracuse, Rutgers, and UConn be sure that they will be invited to the Big 10? No. Is it possible to conceive of a Big 10 expansion that leaves one out? Absolutely. Syracuse is private, no research. Pitt adds no new market--SU, UConn, and Rutgers could deliver much NEW revenue. Rutgers is a newcomer to relevance and is no sure thing for NYC. UConn... also a newcomer, a bit of a geographic outlier and non-AAU. In the fear that all share regarding one being left out, this is the time to strike and make a new plan that prevents disbandment.
