Andy Rautins
Hey guys, this is Brandon C., a writer for the SB Nation Yankees blog, Pinstripe Alley. I recently asked Greg Anthony if he thought Andy Rautins projects as an NBA player in his future. (via my twitter)
@GregAnthony50 Excellent perimeter play high skill set YES
Thoughts? When do you think he will be drafted? Thanks and great job with the site, keep up the great work!

If I were an NBA GM I’d take a late second-round flyer on him. He’s got surprising height and length for the way he plays like a smaller guard, he’s got good defensive instincts, and he’s as good a perimeter shooter you’ll find in the country.
He’s also improved so much in his four (five) years, which shows he’s willing to work on weaknesses and become a better all-around player.
Yes, he turns the ball over a lot but on an NBA team he wouldn’t have to be a huge ball-handler. Just come off the bench, stroke the three, and play some solid defense.
One other thing I’d be worried about is that he’s not used to playing man to man defense against players that are likely more athletic than he is. He’s used to being able to rely on shot blockers behind him and being able to jump passing lanes, so he’ll need to learn to take less risks on defense.
Would Kyle Korver be a good comparison?
Can anyone give me an NBA equivalent? Thanks for commenting

Thanks...Gibson is average at best
It’s tough to compare college to NBA for me

You've broken the cardinal rule of NBA Comparisons
You can only compare white guys to other white guys. Frankly I think Andy looks like a young Larry Bird, or Steve Nash, or Bryant “Big Country” Reeves.

nbadraft.net has him going in the 2nd round to the Mavs with the 49th pick. He has been slowly climbing their board in the last 3 or 4 weeks.
NOOOOOOOOOO
Least favorite team is the Mavericks. I’m a Spurs fan.

Yes
Then again I’m bad at comparing players..

Yes
I watched the Magic last year, and Rautins has what Reddick has and more.
Andy has the range to shoot in the NBA, he’s improved every year, he’s shown to be a great leader, he’s played with the national team, and he can play great defense. Not to mention that he is taller. He can play as a PG or SG as well.
PS- Does the Yankee’s blog writer liking Syracuse mean we are “New York’s College Team”?
Well who else would be?

Agree and siagree
I don’t think he has the ballhandling skill of an NBA point guard. THat’s just my opinion. But he can be a quality sixth man. If I had to compare him to any one player it would be Manu Ginobilli
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
I'm not sure who I'd compare him to, but I'd definitely say yes on the NBA point.
Worth a 2nd round pick I’d say. Excellent shooter, decent height, great passer when he wants to be (and could be excellent if he works at it). I think what will benefit him is his quick release. Closing out on him shooting is really difficult and that may help his NBA prospects quite a bit.
I think someone
takes a flyer on him if we get to the Final 4. He’s just too good at doing a lot of little things. Besides, the turnovers can be fixed just by watching more game film. Really, I’d say that’s probably the only hole in his game, but I’m not a basketball expert.
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
2010 Draft
With the first pick of the second round.
The Brooklyn Nets take A.Rautens/PG-Syracuse!
Don’t write to me and say this is to high for A.Rautens.
Its not about to high of the second round it is about getting a piece of the puzzle for your team.
So you pass on a certain player of talent whom plays another positon.
With all the injuries in the NBA, he would be a ideal fit as the third PG on the Nets team.
D.Harris, K.Dooling and A.Rautens.
He could learn under the first two PG’s along with coming in for spot duty to hit the three.
A wiin-win situation for the Rautens and the Nets.
Someone will take him
Or at least someone should. The guy can flat out shoot the basketball from NBA 3pt range. He has a really fast, high release and he seems to be a legit 6’5" so it’s not like he’s some shrimp that will struggle to shoot over people.
Will he start in the NBA? No, but I also didn’t think he would ever start for Syracuse and he proved me wrong there. He is committed to getting bigger, stronger, and faster – compare him now to his Freshman or Sophomore years. Hell, even compare him to his junior year – he just keeps getting stronger and faster (and his hair isn’t so ridiculous any more). Not to mention, it seems that he really developed his ball handling skills this past off-season. Unlike so many guys that play their full allotment of eligibility, it doesn’t seem like he has reached his ceiling as a player yet.
The guy is a winner and a sharpshooter. There is always room in the NBA for people who can shoot the ball. Even if it’s only 10-15 minutes a game.
