No. 1 Syracuse Orange (27-2) vs. St. John's Red Storm (15-13) GameThread

St. John's Red Storm at Syracuse Orange, Mar 2, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Onu_lock_medium

I think that image speaks for itself.  Arinze and Andy (and Wes) play their first game as the No. 1 team in the nation and their final one in the Carrier Dome.  Bittersweet doesn't even begin to describe it.

Hopefully the No. 1 team in the land takes care of business against St. John's and doesn't give anyone good reason to doubt them any further.

Special note: FingerLakes1.com will be doing a live remote if you want to look in on the action.

Leave your pre-, in- and post-game comments below.  G'Orange!

His freshman year

I was in the pep band, and anytime he did anything monstrous, my section would yell, “ONUAKU SMASH!” Fair warning, I might break this out tonight if he does anything monstrous.

Other people look, Andy Rautins can SEE.

Can't watch the game!!!

I’m in Buffalo (for school) and the game is not on here. I tried to turn it on on ESPN 360 but it says it’s blacked out regionally. I just checked my local TV listings and it’s not on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU! How come I can’t see my Cuse? I know the Louisville game will be on on Saturday but this one isn’t.

This sucks.

he has averaged has 27 points per game in the last 7 games and 13 turnovers.

I know we don’t need him to score but he is dribbling way too much

He’s become a strict jumpshooter and rebounder. pretty noticeable.

by krackatoan on Mar 2, 2010 8:26 PM EST reply actions

Think he looks like that more than is the case

He’s not pushing things because he doesn’t need to. Why go for the forced penetration when he can lay off a nice pass to a teammate. He has fallen a little farther than I’d have hoped.

there is nothing we can accomplish this year

where that won’t show up in the season retrospective. If we never lose again, its the anomaly, if we lose out, its the early warning sign

by Sadler1 on Mar 2, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

An early warning sign?

That we were going to start the season 27-2, attain the #1 ranking and THEN succumb to the humiliation of losing to LeMoyne? I think we’re sufficiently far from that game that it’s just a humorous footnote now.

by Matthew Ventolo on Mar 2, 2010 8:36 PM EST reply actions

I actually like these announcers tonight.

They’re hitting the SU Announcer Bingo stuff pretty heavy. And they keep referring to Scoop as a smart player, which I don’t think is the case 100% of the time (as much as I love him).

But they actually seem to know the team and the conference really well. And they are focusing on the game they are announcing, rather than everything else but the game.

I thought it was pretty astute to point out that we might learn something about the lineup when RickJack and Rautins were out for a few plays.

Added bonus: neither is Dickie V.

by adselver15 on Mar 2, 2010 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

Wes injury

might have forced Jax and Arinze to step up and take up the slack that his minor injury left in the lineup. Also, Andy has broken out of a mid January slump to be just ridiculously good lately, which means he’s hitting more shots and passing the ball like he did early on.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Mar 3, 2010 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

Andy did make a few stupid passes during this game

But they were certainly heavily outweight by smart, impressive passes. Just wish we could lower that number of stupid passes to zero!

by voteprime on Mar 3, 2010 6:19 AM EST up reply actions

aggressiveness

rick kept saying in an interview i watched that JB just told him to be aggressive. i honestly think that’s all arinze and rick need to do to control the game. i’m loving watching them this year because they get the ball and go straight to the hoop, as opposed to last year when both of them would all too often catch the ball, gather himself, maybe dribble, then go up and get blocked because the defense adjusted. they both definitely polished their footwork and moves in the offseason, but i think the biggest change is the decision to go for it.
