Arinze Knew This Would Happen
I have a theory on why Arinze never smiles. He has known for quite some time that this is how his career would end. That is because Arinze Onuaku is unstuck in time.
I'm still not sure how it happened. Maybe Little-Arinze came into contact with a strong source of radiation, mutating him into this basketball beast, but also unhinging him from the normal timeline. Or maybe it had something to do with his ACL tear. Or maybe it has something to do with his birth place of ::Googles:: Lanham, Maryland - a mystical and mysterious place. (actually, it's not, trust me.)
I don't know. He may not even know why. But at some point in his time jumping he saw all this happening. Before it actually occurred on our timeline, he watched the moment when his quad tore. He watched himself on the court, like the rest of us, in shock and disbelief. Then he leaped forward and saw that he doesn't play for the rest of the tournament, and his college career is done.
All this time he's known, maybe even for all four years of his time here (or longer). He's been crushed! Not even able to even feign a smile for the kids.
Now, I know we're all in agreement on the time travel thing -- it's pretty inarguable. But there's still an unanswered question that we could cause some debate: Does he know how the team ends the tournament? Is he sad because Syracuse doesn't make it to the promise land and he blames himself? Or is he sad because they win it all but he isn't able to step on to the court to help them get there?

You're right about one thing
we’re all in agreement on the time travel thing.

Hmmm...
Upon deeper reflection I think Arinze is stuck in a dual-reality like John Locke in Lost. In one realm he takes the form of a man possessed by an all-powerful force and unstoppable within his own confines (much like Arinze on a basketball court). The other realm he is bitter, his body is crippled which is preventing him from reaching his own destiny (winning a national chamionship). Somehow during the Big East Tournament, the two Arinze’s must’ve switched realities, and the Arinze we all used to know is lurking in a different realm of time and space.

I think what it boils down to
is that Arinze’s quad tendons are made out of the same fabric that holds time together. So when he tore his quad, it temporarily jumped him backwards in time. That’s when he saw his past self & told him that SU was losing to Georgetown in the Big East Tournament during his senior season. Because of this news, past Arinze had been unable to smile for well over a year.
Syracuse players have a lot of length.
