Thinking over the magnificent 7 that was SU's rotation in most games this year, I'm wondering if it makes more sense to have Riley start and keep Joseph on the bench.
I know Riley isn't as experienced, but there are a few good reasons to consider starting him vs KJ:
- Given his youth, Riley coming off the bench is not the emotional or energy pick up you can get from Kris.
- If you start Kris and KJ, RJ or WJ gets in foul trouble, then you are force to bring Riley in with a bit more pressure on him and the rest of the team to fill the void
- You only adjust one part of your team, vs. 2-3 pieces. swapping Riley in for AO keeps everyone else in their current roles. Having him come of the bench requires 3-4 players to adjust.
- Finally for Riley, I would think there is a better chance of him getting comfortable and playing into confidence if he starts at 0-0, and without being asked to eat minutes while RJ or someone else sits. Gives him a clean slate to try and build from.
End of the day using 7 guys in a zone D, a lot of the above may not make that much of a difference. I think for me the biggest thing is maintaining the flexibility that bringing Kris off the bench provides. He can completely change the pace of the game.
