Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

The new look, it's coming.

OK, so there has been some talk of a new Syracuse (as shown here). Well I'm been off line all of last week when the talk begin to get louder. So it caught me off guard when I heard about it. To be honest, I don't like the current ones, not enough blue, too much Grey (or sliver or silver). So to be honest, I was looking forward to the new look. That was until, I saw this. And with the rumored target date this WED on national T.V. against UCONN, it going to be VERY interesting. So what's your take.

I just saw Burnt Orange Nation’s story on this and was about to post the same thing. Note the dots on the shorts. We’re definitely getting something along the same line, part of Nike’s new “HyperElite” jerseys.

I really do not like the junk on the back. A basketball jersey isn’t supposed to have a mural on it. Maybe the prediction I made a year ago will come true.

Go, fight, and win.

A few thoughts:
  • I like that, at least on the front, this Texas jersey is pretty simple. Just two colors and an interesting (if sort of cliche) font for their name. I can live with the dots on the shorts if the rest of the jersey is just orange and white with no silver.
  • The back is just too crazy for a jersey. And what would they put on a Syracuse jersey for that? A big orange? Maybe DOC Gross would convince them to put a silhouette of the Empire State Building since we’re NYC’s team.
  • This is actually most important: why fiddle with the jersey mid-season when things are going well?! Doesn’t Nike understand superstition? Changing the jersey just seems like asking for terrible luck.

I was watching the Texas/Kansas game ...

and I couldn’t help but notice something weird. In the link you posted, it’s definitely more noticeable since it’s their dark jerseys. BUT, in their white unis, I kept wondering a) why is their white so see-through, and b) are those t-shirts underneath with designs on them?

Anyway, HATE it if that’s what SU is going to do. But I’m with agent. I don’t like the current unis, so I’m looking forward to a change (mid-season change is dumb, though).

I'm against the new unis.

We’re winning in the old ones; why change a good thing?

by adselver15 on Feb 9, 2010 5:40 AM EST up reply actions

Seconded

All i was saying all game was that Texas’ jerseys are so ugly with that mess on the back.

Christ I hate Nike

Why do they have to mess with our uniforms every goddamned year? Maybe I wouldn’t mind it so much if most of their uniform designs weren’t so hideous. That design on the back…whoever came up with that idea should have his teeth kicked in by a donkey. Can’t we just wear nice orange uniforms that say Orangemen (yeah that’s right) on the front, with white lettering and blue trim, you know, like we did for years before Nike introduced the duct-tape look for the “elite” programs? ARGGH.

That was my cranky old man post of the day.

unfortunately

our current jerseys suck and our new ones probably do too. nike is a disaster!!

by orngfan on Feb 9, 2010 10:01 AM EST reply actions

when is our nike contract over?

adidas and under armour is better… frankly, holy shirt could probably design better uniforms

by chrisbee13 on Feb 9, 2010 11:18 AM EST reply actions

i bought an under armour syracuse sweatshirt last year on campus

and its better looking than any nike syracuse item i’ve bought in the last 5 years..

by orngfan on Feb 9, 2010 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I bought an Under Armour golf polo at Manny’s last year, white with the Syracuse logo on the breast, and it’s far better than the Nike monstrosity polo I bought that is made of, what feels like a tablecloth.

Haven't been a fan of any of the moves since the Nike contract

-Going from Orangemen & Orangewomen to fruit
-Statue with Nike logo
-Removing the blue from our colors
-Overall just altering the school as more of a corporation than a university

No sir, I don’t like it.

Go Orange(men)!

To be fair...

the statue and the blue have nothing to do with Nike. For the statue, someone wasn’t thinking and gave the sculptor modern equipment to base his work on. The unblueing was a Nancy Cantor call. When it was originally announced, they made it clear that blue would still be used as an accent color for the athletics department.

I’ve been surprised by the recent blue backlash. Blue never was one of “our colors.” I love the fact that Syracuse is the only school with a single official school color. It’s been that way since we got rid of the pink and green.

Go, fight, and win.

by Alex O on Feb 9, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

But it seems like blue is an unofficial official color.

Any piece of Syracuse paraphernalia I’ve bought in my life is either all orange or orange & blue. Together orange and blue just looks like Syracuse to me.

That’s why I’m so disappointed that it’s sort of being thrown to the curb. To me, orange is the main color of the team, obviously, but the combination of orange and blue is almost as much Syracuse to me as orange alone.

by voteprime on Feb 9, 2010 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

what planet you been on?

syracuse has been the orange and blue as long as any of us can remember. we were never just orange, we were orangemen [and woman].

From an article printed in The Daily Orange – September 26, 1904:

THE SYRACUSE FLAG

For the protection of our honored college color, “The Orange,” we desire to call the attention of the freshmen to the fact that the only Syracuse flags or banners which are truly representative of Syracuse are the ones with the entire orange field.

Unfortunately there are among the stocks of the city dealers a few flags with a field half orange and half blue.

Some of these have already been sold to students ignorant of the fact that Orange is the college color. It is true that we use blue for lettering purposes; but this color has never been either officially or customarily adopted as a coordinate color.

Buy a Syracuse flag and buy it right away; but see to it that it has an all orange field.

Why orange?

Go, fight, and win.

These are changes made since the Nike contract

not necessarily blaming Nike, but if you think the statue’s logo wasn’t influenced by Nike, then I really don’t know what to say.

As for the colors, according to Glidden: http://www.mostcolorfulfan.com/teamfinder.php?s=3
The SU colors used to be Orange, Blue, and then White. I know this because I specifically purchased the team licensed colors to paint my kids room (which came out awesome, BTW). So Blue might be “unofficial” to some, but they sure as hell charge money to have the exact right shades or Orange, blue & white to be called Syracuse Orange, Syracuse Blue, etc. I still have several paint cans of the stuff still at home.

Go Orange(men)!

how many +1's can be given

for a room, and parenting style, this superb? bravo, sir, bravo.

Nice touch...

The Euclid Ave. sign really brings the room together

Ah, brings back memories of senior year

Though the kids do ask questions about the sign, and trying to explain “drunk logic” to a 5 year old is never easy.

Go Orange(men)!

Very nice.

I make sure my 2 1/2 year old is wearing one of his SU outfits every game day. I can’t wait for him to be ‘trustworthy’ in pants so I can take him to his first SU game.

Awesome!

Had our oldest at the previous attendance record game. You might want to think about earplugs for the little lad, the loud house is loud.

You need a new TV!!!

Nice job with the room!

Eh, the TV is only there so the kiddos can watch an occasional DVD

They don’t need high def to watch the latest Disney/Pixar/Barbie flick.

Other than Pixar I agree.

Truth be told, Pixar movies are so good I almost feel bad watching them on anything but a high definition big screen.

I might regret this

But we did have a Special LeBron

Got a take on this (now don’t go crazy).

What does Syracuse do...SHUT IT DOWN. Nuff said.

And

I know that Nike goes off the weird end sometimes, but this isn’t Nike

Yeah I’ll do Swish and not the “3 stripes”
Our colors with black will just about give me nightmares.

Just saw this on a Miami blog...

“The Hurricanes will be among just eight men’s basketball programs around the nation unveiling a new series of Nike uniforms this month, joining Gonzaga, Kentucky, Michigan State, St. John’s, Syracuse, Texas and UConn. Miami will debut its new unis in Coral Gables on Feb. 10 versus Georgia Tech.”

That’s pretty much confirmation right there. (Even though it was already all but confirmed)

Go Orange!

by MBorkowski on Feb 9, 2010 8:43 PM EST reply actions

I’m surprised to see St. John’s on there. Usually these new uniforms are debuted by teams that… ummm… win games.

Then again, UConn is on there, too.

Go, fight, and win.

by Alex O on Feb 9, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Miami, too.

Michigan St. is wearing their new one tonight.

Go Orange!

by MBorkowski on Feb 9, 2010 9:53 PM EST reply actions

well, if it is tomorrow

we just have to win, and then we’ll all be lauding the new uniforms as we’ll be undefeated in them
