Gottlieb now has some love for the Cuse

Doug Gottlieb has finally seen the light...and it's "orange". I think most of us true hoops fans can accept constructive criticism but some people are just haters as Doug has been known to be. I think since he has actually seen us play a few times this year he now truly understands what our team is about this year in this article. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4891060&name=ncbexperts

Fair

I think when Gottlieb first started he said things to just say them (ripping on OOC schedule, calling teams soft, etc). Now I think he’s the best studio analyst they have. The dude watches a ton of college bball and calls it like it is.

I think a lot of Syracuse fans hold onto what he said 3 years ago about the schedule against him. He’s gotten 100 times better. He doesn’t start fights like he did and continue on. Bilas still does it and doesn’t get nearly the same amount of crap that Gottlieb gets.

Disagree

He is still giving us back-handed compliments throughout the year. It’s not just 3 years ago, he still pulls the same nonsense, even while doing the commentary at one of our games just last week.

When it comes to overall analysis, maybe Doug G is best (and that’s a big maybe), but when it comes to SU he has been about as negative as you can get despite the 22-1 record.

Yeah, Bilas is a Duke shill but when it comes to us he has been more neutral (is that possible) than Doug G. Doug G will continuing getting shit from me (and many other SU fans), and an ESPN Insider blurb is not going to change that.

Which is why

Syracuse gets the short shrift from ESPN. Many cuse fans gang up on announcers when they don’t hear what they want to hear. How about 3 years ago when Cuse got left out with Bilas destroying the OOC schedule and saying Michigan was better?

I like how no one remembers that but always gets on Gottlieb. Also read what Gottlieb wrote and has said about SU last year and this. He has been VERY complimentary especially to Boeheim.

Yesterday Jay Williams said Syracuse hasn’t beaten anyone out of conference on ESPN pre-game. Gottlieb then stood up and said Syracuse can’t control how teams play afterwards. Maybe some venom should be sent Jay Williams way.

Let go of the grudge. Dude is good. Time to admit it.

He is good overall (mentioned it above)

But for Cuse he has still been dogging us this very year, hell just last week during the flippin broadcast, time to admit it.

BTW, our OOC schedule was exactly why we didn’t make it 3 years ago (and the year before that, same reason). Bilas was right then. It is obvious that SU has changed it’s scheduling philoshophy the last two years.

I agree

I find that Gottlieb is not really dogging us at all this year. What have you been reading and watching SUmonkey? Sure he’s made a couple of comments but at this point people are trying to find something wrong with this team and are having trouble. He’s written a few things about SU this year that have been very gracious towards the Cuse. Whatever feud Boeheim and Gottlieb had is gone now. I listen to Colin Cowherd every day and a couple of years ago Boeheim was on the show and the Herd was telling Boeheim that Gottlieb is a big ball buster but he actually likes Boeheim. Listen to the replay of Gottlieb talking to Boeheim on his radio show from a couple of weeks ago. I’m in no way denying that Gottlieb and say Pat Forde havn’t said some retarded things about Cuse, but if you’re a journalist/analyst and you say something and get a million emails from the fans of that team bashing you isn’t that what you want? You want people to be looking for what you’re gonna say next. So you want it to stop? Stop sending them emails about how wrong they are.

Forgot something...

I’m not ragging on you SUmonkey you bring up excellent points, I’m just trying to see it from their point of view and I know if I was a journalist/analyst and I said something and got all the response they get from us I would keep saying those things. I just think we should let the team do the talking for us. Let SU prove them wrong and not give those guys the satisfaction of being right. Haha I clearly have an opinion on this cuz I’m ranting for sure.

No apologies needed

I enjoy spirited debates that don’t get personal.

You know it probably has been only a few comments here or there for this year, it just is his smug attitude when he delivers those comments truly stick with me (and others).

That terrible job he did announcing the SU game a few weekends ago did not earn him any brownie points with me either. He certainly is a better analyst than a color announcer.

P.S. I never sent him an email about his job (nor any analyst), and yes the team is certainly doing a better job speaking than we ever could.

agreed

he is a much better studio analyst. That color announcing gig he did was atrocious. His play by play guy didn’t help but Gottlieb was pretty awful. It’s a good debate to have over Gottlieb. I’ve turned the corner on him, but can see why some Cuse fans may have an issue with his smugness and sometimes arrogant attitude.

As an analyst

He “can” be better than Lunardi however where as Lunardi can be too stat-happy, DougG is all too often too….I dunno how to explain it….too “douchey”?

Maybe next time I will cut DougG some slack…… maybe.

I got a little more respect for him after what he said on Axe the other day...

He says that SU fans particularly noted his negativity, but he does that for everyone. Maybe not equally, but he’s generally known for pointing out the flaws of teams. The explanation he gave for this default position was that a lot of his colleagues are coaches or former coaches and may want a job in the future or they are overwhelmingly positive and in the end, no one takes the time to point out why teams aren’t good. So I can appreciate him a little more as being that asshole who always rains on your parade.

Yeah exactly

I mean the 2-3 zone comment earlier this year was beyond retarded, apparently he hasn’t taken note of a staple of Boeheim’s coaching style for the passed 30 + years. This is probably the best it’s ever been and with the success the programs had over time the fact that he said we rely on it too much is dumb.
