Back in my day, we trudged from South Campus to the University through ten feet of snow without shoes, or clothing, while carrying forty pounds of textbooks on our back AND WE LIKED IT!

“Getting the band back together.” Not sure if that’s a joke or an encore is forthcoming. The piano player transferred to Maryland so they will be a three man crew.

"it's a moral imperative"

that phrase never gets old, does it?

Syracuse players have a lot of length.

This is BULL

We only got school canceled when the Tornado came through after Labor day in 1998….

by Otis Hill on Feb 25, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

that was a crazy storm

all the power lines down all over – the block long BBQs were fun though

by sportzbelle on Feb 25, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

We had a BBQ at my house on the Tuesday I think and had about 40 people watching McGuire break the HR record on a little 3 inch hand held portable TV.

by Otis Hill on Feb 25, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

that strom was nuts

I had just graduated, but drove up for the Tennessee football game. I remember that it was a beautiful day, and my friend and I drove back to NJ afterward…

…then the tornadoes hit and my friend’s car (she lived on Euclid) was destroyed by a fallen tree limb. Crazy shit.

Hell of a way for me to start my college career

Welcome to Syracuse. You knew about the snow. Well, we also have crippling tornados.

Enjoy Day Hall. Oh, by the way: Everyone in Lawrinson is dead.

I lived on South

and that storm made the place look like doll houses

by jgrupposo on Feb 25, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Drove through campus the morning after

Trees down everywhere, power lines all over the road, not a soul out on the street (10am). Was like out of a bad end of the world movie.

Almost got crushed by a collapsed chimney.

Go Orange(men)!

Not sure

I ever had class cancelled for snow in my four years of college. And I went to school off of Lake Erie.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

well you have to hallow out your text books and put the cans in them … come on , havent you ever been to college haha

by blindmole on Feb 25, 2010 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly

I don’t even bring my textbooks to class.

by actioncuse on Feb 25, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly

 I don’t buy textbooks anymore.

I always think the people who bring textbooks to class (unless it is test day and they are studying furiously) are trying to hard.

seriously ...

having been born and raised in syracuse proper … ill never figure out how it is that people cant handle this snow … its kind of pathetic , i never even owned a car it was either bike or walk my mile and a half to campus every day …

wusssssssies … hahahah

though its even funnier here in NYC , cause noone can handle the snow so i love spending my lunch break drinking cofee and watching people fall over haha

by blindmole on Feb 25, 2010 2:01 PM EST reply actions

Same here

Except I am in Florida. Don’t complain, you never have to worry about sunburns!

by actioncuse on Feb 25, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Easier to walk in this than to drive.

Same here in Binghamton

BU called off classes all day.

Broome Community College pulling a half day.

It’s not this morning. It’s the trip home later. The worst is gonna hit around 4-6.

Absurd

Even Syracuse has gone soft. Back in my day we walked through two feet of snow in 50 mph winds, and won bowl games. Now, we cancel school and the football team sucks. Coincidence? I think not. You bet your ass that a little snow won’t stop Doug Marrone from pumping those tremendous thighs of his (nh) and trudging up to South Campus today, do you? That’s yet another reason why I believe in HCDM.

ridiculous...

i told a current student “when i went to SU we walked miles through the snow to class, to games and to the bars” – and we did!!! heck the dome roof caved in and we still had class

by BlondeBomber44 on Feb 25, 2010 2:10 PM EST reply actions

Oswego State here

Never had school cancelled once…and my dorm was 200 feet from Lake Ontario. But like Afroman said…“my daddy said he walked 10 miles to school everyday…and I say, ohh…is that why you didnt graduate”. Afro mother Fuckin M-A-N

Haha

you guys and your ropes to pull yourselves to classes.

Yeah, I know it’s not true, but I love bringing it up to Oswego alums and get them all frustrated at it.

by PoetryInMoten on Feb 25, 2010 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

Really? Canceled?

It’s only 1-2 feet of snow. I can’t remember how many times I went to class after/during a foot+ of snow. Or even a 2 foot snowfall at one point. I know I lived in one of the snowier parts of the Syracuse area (Onondaga Hill) and we always got more snow than the campus itself (can’t remember how many times there’d be 3-4 inches+ of snow on the ground at my apartment, but barely a dusting at the bottom of the hill and on campus), but still.

The Syracuse lifers I went to class with proudly told me that the only time class had been canceled in their memory was for the Blizzard of ’93. Guess things have changed since…

by wildcatlh on Feb 25, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions

Blizzard of '93 was great..

I’m only 5’9" but I remember shovling snow drifts higher the me. My wife was expecting and couldn’t help at all.

Now, as a teenager living in Watertown for the Blizzard of ’77, we missed two weeks of school. I still have pictures of my dad standing on a snow bank holding his arm up and only being 2 feet from the power lines.

Blizzard of '93

Only time I know of SU to cancell – and it wasn’t because we couldn’t walk in it. It happened at the end of spring break and Hancock was shut down – no one could get back to campus from spring break.

Syracuse University.

Classes and partying, as scheduled.

It was a derecho!

First of all, it was a derecho, not a tornado – c’mon, those who were there know this!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_State_Labor_Day_Derechos

And then Big Pun’s stage got blown apart and concert canceled – and he died a short time later, never able to reschedule. Big dagger of my college career.

Second, if this snow storm ruins my road trip up there for the game, I will punch Mother Nature in the teeth (and what am I going to do w/my fantastic tickets if I can’t get there?!? I will be out a lot of $$$. And never able to wear my special game shirt.)

Finally, kids these days are such pansies – we used to walk 10 miles, up hill both ways, in 2+ feet of snow, wearing only a tube top and thin black pants. All for some Coors Light or maybe a fishbowl. Man up, SU students. Man up.

I was playing bball at archibold

and we needed a 5th man. Low and behold Demetris Nichols walks in and agrees to play on our team.

He ended the game on a big dunk over some kid who was trash talking him the whole time, wish I had a picture/video of it.

I do commercial production and graphics design for a living.

Have a pretty flexible schedule.

Going on Vaca next week so I worked double hard Monday Tuesday to free up the time to do next week’s work today and tomorrow. Sadly, that work is “on-location” production.

Cancelled.

Now I’ve got all my work done for this week and I am BORED OUT OF MY MIND sitting and watching snow fall.

Catching Chery Bernard and Team Canada earlier was nice though…
