Recruiting Numbers (Ranking)
I heard something on ESPN yesterday or today about (according to them) one of the things making this years team so special is that no one was ranked very high in the rankings coming out of high school but how wonderfully everyone has developed. (Case and point, Andy--who they said was ranked in the mid-700s). It got me thinking about two things. 1) Where were our guys ranked coming out of high school (a curiosity thing, I'm not that big on numbers---not sure how you can gauge how a 17 year old fella will develop physically, mentally and emotionally--- case and point, supposed one and doner Paul Harris). And 2) How is it then that ESPN is also always seeming to say that 'Cuse is like Top 5 in recruiting class? I'm not understanding how our guys aren't like Rivals or ESPN Top 100, but our overall class is Top 5. None of this really matters---bottom line is we kick ass (for the most part, usually, I'm a little worried about the G'Town game). But I figure we have a few days off and people around here are typically insightful, so its something to talk about.

Recruiting Rankings
This is just a bizarre year. Technically we should be loaded with highly rated players, but due to people leaving early or transferring, all those guys are gone. Donte Greene (ranked #9 in the country by Rivals), Jonny Flynn (#22), Mike Jones (#40), Paul Harris (#12), and Eric Devendorf (#46) should all be on this team right now. The highest ranked player that’s actually on the team right now is Mookie Jones of all people (#35), and none of our starters cracked the top 50. Of the four players coming in next year, all 4 are in the Rivals150, led by Fab Melo at #16. Like I said, this year was just a bizarre perfect storm in which the last bunch of highly ranked guys left, but the new ones haven’t arrived yet. It seems to be working though!
Yes, next years recruiting class is ranked top 5
And nobody currently starting on the team was ranked high in high school.. I think out of our 7-man rotation, Scoop was actually ranked highest
The announcer Wednesday said something weird
He said, although Scoop and Rick went to HS together, they were recruited independently. I always thought the reason Scoop chose SU over, say, Nova, was because we also offered a scholarship to Jackson. Does anyone else remember hearing that in Wednesday’s broadcast?
I remember hearing that and thinking it was wrong.
I was pretty sure they were not necessarily a package deal, but both signed with each other in mind.
(Huh, I rhymed while making my point. Jay-Z ain’t got nothin’ on me. Did it again! How you like me now? Oh, oh. One more time with feeling!)
Sorry, I’ll stop.
Thanks
Orange Chirs—I knew people here were so wise. And Mr. Plow, I recall the Scoop/Rick Jackson story you are referring to. I thought Scoop pretty much flat out wouldn’t go anywhere without Rick and Nova wasn’t even willing to give him a look. I didn’t hear it in the broadcast Wednesday (had to listen to a bit in my car), but anything outside the package deal story would be news to me.
I personally think
that Syracuse succeeds with coachable players, not necessarily the most talented ones.
