LOST Episode 2 - What Kate Does
Can we get some LOST discussion up in this piece?
Here, I'll get things started with a few links:
- Jeff Jensen's initial post on LOST (not his normal 18 page episode summary, which I assume will be coming soon)
- Did you notice the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia dude in last night's episode?
- Follow the Lostpedia episode entry as the general LOST public adds more and more tidbits of information.
Anyone else have sites they read?
Questions:
- Maybe this is obvious, but has Claire been stricken with the same crazies that made Rouseau the way she was? Is this "virus"/"darkness" actually in Sayid? WTF is it?
- Have we seen some connections between the Alterna-World and the Island-World? One thought: Last night Kate reminded us that she originally came back to the Island to try and reconnect Claire with Aaron. In the end of the episode Kate encourages Claire to keep the baby. Are our LOSTies subconsciously fixing their fucked up lives in the Alterna-World?
- Ethan Rom as a doctor?! Is he evil in this world, too? Or did blowing up that bomb cause him to never get on the Island in the Alterna-World and as a result he's a genuine doctor now? Or are the Others so goddamn all-knowing that they are keeping tabs on the LOSTies even in this Alterna-World?
- Why were these new Others so insistent that all the LOSTies need to stay in the temple? And yet the dude from It's Always Sunny was going to kill Jin? Temper issues.
- Why does Nike always ruin our goddamn uniforms? And will changing the uniforms mid-season change our luck? (there's your Syracuse connection to this post)
Alright, that's all from me for now. Let's talk it up, people!

Jensen's Recap
Still digesting the episode. Feels like one of the ones that make a lot of sense once larger questions are answered but for now doesn’t seem to have moved the story very far along.

I would agree with that.
Kind of setting the table for more to come. And as Jensen pointed out somewhere, LOST writers tend to make the opener action packed, and then slow things down for the next episode, setting the pace for the season.
Mac (Always Sunny) was awesome.
I’m so damn confused right now. This season was supposed to answer questions, not make more…
Q's
1. Yeah I think we’re looking at “the sickness” that Rousseau described way back when.
2. I think the Alterna-world LOSTies very clearly have some kind of memory of the other world. When Kate was in the cab, frantically trying to get out the airport, she looked back and saw Jack standing there. She had this look on her face like she recognized him and wanted to call to him for help because she knew he would help…but she also realized she had no idea who that strange man is. It’s like this giant case of Deja Vu.
3. Ethan Rom WAS a doctor in the normal world as well. And I think he was completely nice…LOVED the line about how he didn’t want to go unnecessarily sticking her with needles… I get the sense that since the island isn’t there to attract him and The Others to it, he led the life he was supposed to…as a nice doctor.
4. Cause they realize Man in Black is loose and coming to kill them (the LOSTies are obviously extremely valuable to them because their names are on that list). And of course, in true island fashion, you cant just tell people why you’re helping them, you have to be extremely mysterious and vague.
5. Alvar Hanso runs Nike.

Goodspeed
Also the fact that Ethan Rom is now Ethan Goodspeed (as in Horace)…not sure what that means…

I had forgotten that Horace is Ethan's father
Horace’s wife gave birth to a baby in 1977 and told Juliet they had named the baby “Ethan.” I guess Ethan was generally a good person on the island, but that whole mess with Claire and her baby and the needles and such made me feel otherwise since, then, the Others were evil evil evil.
Goodspeed
They’re setting up a “The Rock”/“Lost” scenario where Sean Connery returns to his second place of captivity (The Island) and helps lead a second Goodspeed through a wacky set of obstacles and trigger-happy anonymous goons to a heart-stopping final scene where Ethan jams a widdled wooden hypodermic needle into his heart while holding up smoke monster flares telling everyone that they are in fact safe.
The Goodspeeds
Coming to ABC this fall

Three years
According to IASIP Guy, it’s been three years since the LOSTies left the island. Does that sound right to everyone else? I feel like that’s longer than I thought it had been.

I forget why,
but that’s the established timeline on the show. I think we meet up with the messed up LOSTies in 2007 after their lives have gone horribly wrong when returning home. And it was 2004 when they originally landed on the island.
This seemed to make sense in my head at some point, but with time travel and 5 seasons and island time moving much slower than real life time, I’m actually have a very hard time having this make sense in my head.
This also works
For the time travelers, as they’re stuck in 1974 when Locke stops the flashes, and it’s 1977 when Jack et al. return and the bomb gets set off. So it seems that the 3 years passed at the same rate on the past-island and in the present-LA.

Oh, true,
I do remember this because, for those that were having trouble understanding why Sawyer would be more attached to Juliet than Kate, Doc Jensen reminded his readers that Sawyer and Juliet had been dating for 3 solid years. That’s plenty of time to fall in love.
You guys are right

Agree that it feels shorter than that, though...
Since they told so much of the LA story line as isolated events (Sayid the hit-man, Jack and Kate shacking up) so we have no context for how long it actually lasted.

Other sites
The TWoP forums are generally decent (although there are more than a couple of whack-a-doos trolling in there) and their recaps are usually entertaining (albeit late)

Oh, which reminds me,
a friend had told me to start reading the VideoGum recaps, and here’s the latest. Haven’t read it yet.
Also, though it takes time for her (I think it’s a her) to put them together, I love the Ack Attack summaries.
I wonder...
…what happened to Michael and Walt in the Sideways reality… haven’t seen them yet. I can understand not seeing people like Eko and Ana-Lucia, but those two were pretty major and we’ve seen all of the other Season 1 main characters thus far.
okay time to stop thinking about Lost for a while

Good point
they HAVE TO come back. But how do you show 12-year-old Walt in the sideways reality? He’s 6’3" now.
