I also came across an article titled "Why Jonny Flynn's D-League Assignment Could Be Most Important in League History" - It seems that Flynn might be the biggest name ever to suit up in the D-League & even though this is very common in baseball to re-hab in the minors, it looks like a new approach for the NBA.

Also while browsing the D-League i notice that Paul Harris has been tearing it up avg. over 15 pts and almost 10 rebounds a game through the 1st 6 games of their season (LINK)
