Recruiting Classes Throughout The Years (1986-2010)

While watching the Orangemen over the weekend with a few friends and my cousin we started to think about if there was a better recruiting class than this years class. So, that got me thinking... I immediately thought of 01's class with Pace, Warrick, Edelin, Forth, and Mark Konecny (remember him?) Anyway, I went back through the years and looked up our classes back to 1986... really it didn't take me that long. I'd love everyone's thoughts and input.

For the record: I believe this years class is the best (on paper) but obviously unproven.

Here's the list:

1986- Derrick Coleman, Stephan Thompson, Matt Roe (can't stand him), Keith Hughes, Earl Duncan (had to sit out due to prop 48

1987-N/A

1988- Billy Owens (#1 overall), Dave Johnson, Rich Manning, Dave Siock

1989- Micheal Edwards, McNasty McRae, Hopkins

1990- 'Red' Autry (fill in for Kenny Anderson), Scott McCorkle

1991- Poetry in Moten, Anthony Harris, Luke Jackson, Glenn Sekunda

1992- John Wallace, Z Sims, JB Reafsnyder

1993- Otis Hill, Charles Gelatt (who?)

1994- Todd Burgan, Bobby Lazor, Marius Janulis

1995- David Patrick, Elivir Ovcina ----> worst class ever, but I think we were coming off of the NCAA infractions

Star-divide

1996- Jason Hart, Etan Thomas, Ramel (Rock) Lloyd, LeSean Howard

1997- Allen Griffen, Eric Williams, Damone Brown

1998- Kueth Duany, Tony Bland, Billy Celuk, Preston Shumpert

1999- Mark McCarroll, Jeremy McNeil, DeShaun "Thug" Williams

2000- Greg Davis, James Thues

2001- Billy Edelin, Forth, Konecny, Pace, Warrick

2002- A guy named Carmelo, G-Mac, and Matty Gorman

2003- Louie McCrosky, D-Nichols, Terrance Roberts, Mookie Watkins

2004-Josh Wright, Dayshawn Wright (I take that back---->this is our worst class ever)

2005- 8-Mile Devendorf, Arinze, Andy Rautins

2006- Devin Brennan-McBride, Paul Harris, Mike Jones

2007- Jonny Flynn, Donte Green, Rick Jackson, Scoop Jardine, Sean Williams---> could have been the best class ever

2008- Kris Joseph, Mookie Jones

2009- DaShonte Riley, Brandon Triche, James Southerland

2010- Fab Melo, Dion Waiters, CJ Fair, Baye Moussa Keita

I would say that the 2007 Class is the best but two left early. Second thought is that the '01 Class or the '02 Class because they were the reason we won our only Championship. Also, the '87 Class has to be up there too with Stevie opening up the West Coast for recruiting and DC killing it as a freshman. I wish Hughes and Duncan stayed. I wanted Matt Roe gone before he transferred.  I would have to say that this 2010 class (#2) overall rated has the most talent but time will tell.

I'd love to hear some of your thoughts and feedback!

JUST WAIT!

Cooney, Christmas, and MCW will be one of the best recruiting classes to ever come out of Cuse.

PS I dont think people realize how good Cooney is going to be (hes the least talked about player out of the 3 and he was the youngest player on the USA team this summer and did pretty well). Analysts say he may be the best pure shooter in the country his age. Also, MCW may be the next Evan Turner (big PG or a SG)…and Christmas is one of the only very athletic centers that have committed to the Orange that is ready to go (not a project at all)

According to Rivals...2011

National Rankings:

Syracuse – #6

Rakeem Christmas (12)
Michael Carter-Williams (16)
Cooney had offers from Pitt, OSU, Notre Dame, Villanova, Wake, WVU, St.Joe’s and Rutgers

That '05 class was actually quite excellent.

For all his flaws, Devendorf was a very talented player and brought a lot to the team. Rautins goes without saying and Arinze turned into a force down low (and his absence most likely cost us a Final Four appearance last year).

I voted ’02 because a player like Melo is so rare they make a class stellar by themselves. Throw G-Mac in there plus an overachieving Gorman and you have an excellent recruiting class.

Remember when the ’03 class was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread? Kind of funny to think that was a highly ranked class at the time.

’07 is up there because while Greene was frustrating he was still talented. Flynn was amazing, Scoop has become a great player and Rick is now the man.

by NOLACuse on Dec 1, 2010 2:49 PM EST reply actions

was thinking the same thing

which is why I don’t put much stock in which class is the best “on paper”. because that ’03 class was the best on paper.

by MrPlow99 on Dec 1, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I think we all remember the hype about the ’03 class. However, we did get 3 quality starters out of it. Yes, they def underperformed at times, but they all at least held their own

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Dec 1, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

By the end Roberts, Mookie and Nichols were all certainly providing quality minutes.

But that class was supposedly good for a couple Final Fours, so ultimately I would have to say it fell far below expectations.

by NOLACuse on Dec 1, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

Watkins was the most disappointing

Absolutely dripping with potential…that kid could have been something. What a shame. And Roberts should have been so much better, but the problems were always between the ears.

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

That has to be a joke

Terrence Roberts actually got worse every season he was at SU. Without question the most irritating player I ever watched. I was so happy the day I realized I’d never have to watch him play in person again in my life.

by tashmo56 on Dec 1, 2010 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Which one

had the serious big man knee issues? Watkins or roberts? I cant recall now

by Pinker on Dec 2, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

'03 Class

Yes! I remeber going to the first pre-season game that season and seeing them on the court all at once and I even said this could be the best class we ever had! Remember, we lost to Charlotte that year, the first game of the season when that dude hit like 11 3’s?. We were ranked #7 coming in…. ended up going to the Sweet 16 and D-Nichols had a pretty good freshman season.

I would say the ‘07 Class has/had the most talent but I was actually glad when Donte Green left so it’s hard for me to rationalize that as being my choice.

by mikecollinsjr on Dec 1, 2010 3:06 PM EST reply actions

BRENDAN PLAVICH.

AND BUTTER JOHNSON.

That’s all.

It's the most bullshit thing I've seen in thirty years.

by Girardi Party on Dec 1, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

One class won SU more than 10 fucking games!

oh, and that title too.

Choice is clear folks.

Go Orange(men)!

by SUmonkey on Dec 1, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions

Thanks for putting together the list

I went with the ’07 class even though 2 of them left early. 3 future NBA draft picks + Scoop is pretty damn impressive. Whatever happened to Sean Williams??

2010 definitely has a lot of potential and without a doubt is one of the better classes we’ve seen throughout the years.

by crouton on Dec 1, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions

2 left early

and Jax is becoming a beast. Another fine job by Bernie. May the man live to 130 and coach Cuse big men until the age of 125.

Sean Williams

quietly left for Cal State Fullerton. I wondered that too, since I thought he would be off the bench last year when AO got hurt instead of DaShonte, didn’t even know he’d left the team, thought I had actually seen him on the bench.

Sad, we could have used him last year, he would have brought a lot more to the table then DaShonte.

SUmonkey...

You’re Absolutely right… Extremely hard to argue Melo (with apologies to Dave Bing) will be the best player we have every had here and the NBA , G-Mac, a local legend in his own right and arguably the best shooter the hill has ever seen, and the over-acheiving Matt Gorman.

I voted for this years class (I know, I know, I will catch some major flack) but I really like this class and what it could possibly offer. The future is bright with Orange.

Looking back I probably should have included the class with the Pearl or the class with Roosevelt Bouie and Louis Orr….

by mikecollinsjr on Dec 1, 2010 3:44 PM EST reply actions

Sorta partial to the '05 class

Loved every one of them.

I mean E, A.O. and Faux Hawk is a pretty good class considering how big they were for us at the end. Early developmental guys, contributors and later stars. Perfect college careers [maybe not for E, but still.

Also I saw these guys frosh-through-senior years so am a bit partial there.

by goober112 on Dec 1, 2010 4:08 PM EST reply actions

I had to vote for the 2002 class

It’s clearly a “hindsight” pick, but it’s hard to argue with the class that yielded you the freshman stars on the 2003 national title team.

Because his name is a glaring omission. I mean, how can you mention Elvir Ovcina and Ethan Cole with good ol Billy?

Winifred Walton

He was a big time recruit in ’96. That was a great class with Rock Lloyd. With Walton it was a fab 5. Anyone remember that name or know what happened to him?

by CuseItUp on Dec 1, 2010 5:43 PM EST reply actions

I know he tried

to transfer to Fresno St. to play with Tark. Not sure if he ever did. I know he didn’t get into Cuse b/c of academic reasons, something like a super low SAT score. I’m pretty sure he didn’t do anything but play for like a year or two and they were unspectacular at best.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Dec 1, 2010 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Winfred Walton

Walton was bounced based on issues with his SAT/ACT scores. He had two low scores and then suddenly posted a high score. Someone (the NCAA or Syracuse) made him take the test again and evidently it did not back up the higher score. He showed up on campus and then found out that he was ineligible. He was the jewel of that recruiting class (I think Top 5 or so) – the first class immediately following the improbable Final Four (I still love you Jason Cipolla for your fall away shot from the corner.) Walton did play at Fresno State but put up very poopy numbers and may not have started. I think he left Fresno State early to become eligible for the NBA draft and did not get drafted. He may be hanging out with Scotty Thurman.

By the way, do not even call the David Patrick / Elvir Ovcina class the worst ever. Both were role players on that 1996 Final Four team (okay, maybe not Patrick). If you never had the opportunity to witness a 6’11" guy stroke ugly threes, then you have not lived.

ElvirFor3

You provided me with a good laugh there! I remember Elvir very well. And if you look above in the original post… I later called DaShaun and Josh Wright the worst class ever!!!

Sorry...

Thanks for the ones I missed… HOW in the world did I miss Shumpert AND Celek… edited original post with updates. Shumpert was in the ’97 class

Shumpert

meant ’98 class with Bland

I don't even know how to answer

However, I highly value the Class of ’05 because of the countless moments they provided us despite how unheralded they were.

Regardless, this was a great post. Very nice work, mikecollinsjr.

Even though one kind of has to go for the '02 team

My first really solid memory of SU ball comes from the mid-90s, and the first really exciting NBA calibre player was John Wallace. I think I have to vote for ‘96, because I correctly predicted the Final Four outcome as a 10 year old (if only I could do that now that I’m old enough to bet money on things), and the Wallace-Hart-Thomas team is still my measure for SU Basketball teams of present day.
