TCU To Big East Today, Start Play In 2012-2013

Photo

When an airplane crashes, they say the worst thing that airline can do is advertising of any kind. Even advertising that promotes how safe the planes are or how sorry the company is. The idea being that regardless of your ad's intentions, they only stand to reinforce everyone's memory of the horrible crash.

Same thing applies to BP and the oil spill. Remember when they did all those ads afterwards about how bummed they were and how they were going to fix everything and all you kept thinking about was how messed up the oil spill was?

So keep that in mind when the Big East announces today that TCU is officially joining the conference. So says Dicky Weiss...

In a move designed to prop up a weak football conference, The Big East has convinced TCU to leave the Mountain West and join the league as an all sports member, sources told the Daily News early this morning. Commissioner John Marinatto and Associate Commisioner in charge of communications John Paquette both flew to Dallas yesterday for the official announcement at 1 p.m. today.
I'm all for the Horned Frogs joining up for quite a few reasons. That said, I think the timing is awful for two specific reasons:

1. All it's going to do it remind everyone how much better TCU is than every other team in the Big East and how bad Big East football has been this year.

2. Let the "can TCU have the Big East's automatic bid this year?" jokes begin.

Then again, when have we ever assumed Big East officials know how to do things like this? Let's see how this goes...

Update: Fanhouse says TCU will begin playing in the Big East in the 2012-2013 season. So go ahead and book that hotel room for our 2013 basketball game in Ft. Worth. Brett McMurphy also mentions that the conference expects an answer from Villanova by the end of the academic year about becoming football team No. 10.

I don’t care how good they are at football. That’s embarrassing.

Good move

Hope it’s true.

Those “problems” are only issues for a very, very short period. TCU joining now or two months from now completely changes the BE landscape for the better. Making sure to avoid those two questions is meaningless in the ultimate goal of this move…

I like it. Hope DePaul gets booted yesterday.

But I don’t even go to Rutgers for a game, and they’re like 20 minutes from me. I go to the Carrier Dome and the Carrier Dome only!

Besides, who cares if we go to the games? The important thing is that Texas football recruits at Syracuse would get two games in their home state during their four years. That can’t do anything but help HCDM recruit.

Keeley, there's one flaw with your analogy

In both those business moves involving advertising, the company did something wrong and the company is trying to rectify it and get back to being a safe, responsible company. Here, the conference just sucks, and the move does nothing except improve the conference. I think it’s a great move and I’m happy about it.

Actually...

This will accomplish a goal many who dislike the BCS system have been trying to prove and that is, how well can the TCU’s or Boise State’s hold up in a better conference through a 8-9 game schedule and the Big East gets a team that could potentially play in the BCS championship game this year if Auburn loses to South Carolina in the SEC championship game. There are some SU fans in Texas who will enjoy this, it should help recruiting aspects because now Syracuse will be shown on TV in that area once a year at least and if Nova finds a way to make it fiscally possible, that puts the Big East that much closer to a conference championship game as well (can we play that in MSG somehow?).

by Orange Chuck on Nov 29, 2010 10:45 AM EST reply actions

one down, three to go.

Big east needs to get to 12 football members so we can get a conference game. Unfortunately the big east is run by morons but hopefully they get this done.

baby steps
  1. is either ’Nova moving up or a CUSA school. After TCU and ’Nova or the other newbie is establshed a bit (and just before our next TV contract), we go to 12 and split.

It's messier then that due to the non-football programs already in the big east for Hoops

Lot of revenue issues involved inter conference that need to be worked out.

A conference championship game at the New Meadowlands would be serious coin though.

So TCU, Nova – okay and okay. After that?
UCF and Memphis….meh

by JonnyNYC on Nov 29, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

We may only need 10.

I think the Big 12 is petitioning to keep their conference game even though they will be down to 10 schools. If they get that, no reason we, as another 10 team conference (in theory), couldn’t reference their petition as reason we should have a conference game with only 10 as well.

by NOLACuse on Nov 29, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Different circumstances

Even if Big 12 gets their petition granted, it would likely be based on the fact that the conference has had a championship game for years and lost two teams involuntarily.

We, on the other hand, would just be another 10 team conference. I think the more appropriate analogy in that instance would be to the Big 10 or Pac 10 (neither of which is permitted to have a championship game at this time). if the NCAA wasn’t going to let OSU and Penn State battle it out in a 10-team league, I don’t think they’ll be in a hurry to allow TCU and South Florida do so.

This is a good first step

thought we should have waited until after they blow the doors off some B12 team before we made the announcement. Now we need Nova, then a good TV deal, then lure BC and MD over.

That being said, we really need to get our league on national TV…. because there is no way NJ and Penn State leftovers from PA can continue to provide the talent we need to stay competitive diluted amongst this many teams.

**FREE FreeBradshaw***

by ryanwk628 on Nov 29, 2010 10:50 AM EST reply actions

There isn't enough talent even counting what Penn State takes as it is.

We need to get some southern recruits as a conference to even get competitive. If Texas becomes an area we can mine as a conference it will be a big, big help.

Another interesting note on this I read here:

One other item to note from The current four-year evaluation period for the BCS concludes in December 2011, so TCU’s past BCS rankings – three consecutive top 11 BCS rankings, including this year – will transfer to the Big East since it joined the league before the 2012-13 school year.

This will work out just fine, long enough for the ACC-16 to snap us, UConn, Pitt and ’Nova up.

Two repeats instead of 3

It’s not hard, and no less crazy than the current system. If football member #10 also gets an all-sports invite, it’s just one repeat (presumably a traditional rivalry if possible, and so Georgetown for us).

by drothgery on Nov 29, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

Good move

Traditional geography doesn’t mean squat in college football anymore. Just look at what the Big-10/Pac-10 did. It’s all about money. TCU will bring more football respect and money. I just wish Auburn had lost on Saturday, then the Big East would be adding a team from the title game.

by upstateNYYFan1984 on Nov 29, 2010 11:27 AM EST reply actions

I tend to agree

… but the Big Ten and Pac 10’s moves don’t really make your case. Nebraska borders Iowa. Utah and Colorado border Arizona.

And Auburn still could lose their rematch with South Carolina. Their defense still isn’t very good (Oregon will kill them).

by drothgery on Nov 29, 2010 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Does anyone else really feel sorry for Boise right now? I mean, they join the MWC looking to join up with Utah and TCU, and likely get a potential AQ spot for the BCS. Instead, Utah runs off to the Pac-10, TCU to the Big East, and Boise might be in a worse position than they are in the WAC.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

By brother is a ’Nova grad and generous donor. He was home for Thanksgiving and told me that ’Nova will join the BE Football. They will play in a soccer stadium (PPL Park) for a few years (with 1 game/year in “The Linc”) until such a time that the Temple contract with the Linc expires.

by AlbanyHDTV on Nov 29, 2010 11:30 AM EST reply actions

Isn't it NCAA rule

For D1A team to have a 15k avg? And if you don’t meet this you can be sent to 1AA? I don’t think it is enforced but it would be very embarrassing to the Big East if Nova cannot meet this. They avg 8500 this year so where are they getting 6500 more people? The Big East teams travel very poorly so they can’t count on road teams making up for that. I am sure they can steal some of Temple’s fans but Temple only gets 20k themselves.

And how will Nova pay for the increased schollies, recruiting budget, facilities, coaches salaries, etc?

Not to mention for SU, RU, and UConn you now have another BCS team (along with PSU and BC) to compete against for the already weak NE talent pool. I will love the road trip but this is awful news for SU FB.

Great news for Boise St

If the BCS deal stays the same. Currently the highest ranked non BCS team gets an auto bid as long as they are Top 14 in the BCS. If that rule remains then things just got easier for Boise St. Before they had to win the WAC and finish higher than BYU, TCU, Utah, the rest of the MWC, the MAC, CUSA, and the Sunbelt. Now with Utah going to the P10, TCU going to the BE, and BYU Indy things are easier.

Doesn't matter

ND has a special rule to get an autobid if they’re in the top 8. The top non-AQ conference champ gets in if they’re in the top 12 or in the top 16 and above the lowest-ranked AQ champ. Any other indy or non-AQ school is just in the generic at-large pool (if they’re in the top 14).

Whether it is good for SU or bad for SU

or good for the Big East or bad for the Big East…. there is no choice regarding these events.

by ezcuse on Nov 29, 2010 12:08 PM EST reply actions

This is ridiculous

Based here in RI and just see so many problems with this. Sure football pays the bills, but you have all those other sports (tennis, Girl’s hoops, Field Hockey, soccer) that draw 1,000 fans at most and the cost of travel now grows exponentially for those participating in those sports. How do you get from Morgantown to Ft. Worth? They’ll have to do like the Ivies and schedule weekend road trips (Friday at Columbia, Saturday at Princeton) and nothing during the week. In a perfect college world (yeah right), the Big East would bounce the catholic hoops schools and let them start their own conference. St. Johns, G’Town, DePaul, Providence, Nova if they stay behind for football, and maybe add Boston University, Xavier and form a Pope Benedict Conference. There’s some serious talent there still. Keep Notre Dame in that catholic conference if they keep wussing out on football. But, trust me, that Syracuse to Ft Worth flight for a girl’s tennis match is going to drain the color from Dr. Gross’ face and the money from the athletic budget pretty quickly no matter how much more we get from football.

by Orangedoug on Nov 29, 2010 1:06 PM EST reply actions

What about travel to Tampa?

The difference between Tampa and Ft Worth is there, but it’s not that drastic either.

football

pays for all that too… well, for the womens sports at least. On the men’s side, a lot of that money comes from alumni donating. Men’s non-revenue sports alums are amongst the biggest donors at SU.

Theres also the option of playing two teams at a neutral site. i.e. we all travel to cincy, we play cincy, TCU plays cincy, then SU plays TCU at Cincy.

Gross will be supportive because 1) it saves football and 2) all those sports count towards the directors cup he is so enamored with
