So all this talk about Syracuse and a BCS bowl has me stewing a bit. As much as I would LOVE to see Syracuse win the Big East crown, playing in a BCS bowl may just be a tad premature for this team. Believe me, I'm still pulling for Syracuse to finish 10-2 (6-1) in any case, regardless of what Pitt or anyone else does the rest of the way. There's absolutely no way to justify at this point us getting the BCS slot over them, barring a total melt-down on their part (which is always possible). They're undefeated in the conference and flat out embarrassed us on our own turf. They deserve it, not matter how dissappotingly awful they looked losing to Notre Dame.
So in dreaming up an ideal bowl scenario, I gotta think long-term. If Syracuse immediately hops back into the BCS bowl scene, there could be a lot of undesirable effects, both long and short term. Rather than focusing on the amazing turnaround season Syracuse Football has had, the media would focus on the weak Big East, and Syracuse would immediately become the poster child for why the conference needs to lose its AQ status. It sucks to say it, but no one wants a Big East team in a BCS bowl this season. And as big of a fan as I am, I also have to recognize that Syracuse very well could get destroyed by the likes of any team in the BCS top-15, and not only would nothing good would come from that, it would be devastating. Even though we're 6-2, Syracuse is still rebuilding. I'm not saying we wouldn't stand a chance, just that winning a BCS bowl game would be a mighty tall order for a team who was annihilated by Pitt and Washington not too long ago. So lets let Pitt take the national stage ass-kicking for us. If we've learned anything from their OOC games, we know they're good at embarrassing themselves when it counts the most.
At the same time...as much as I admire the quest for the Beef and believe it is still the goal until bowl eligibility has been achieved, I think being that Syracuse is, y'know, the #2 team in the conference, we very soon need to set our sights higher than the #6 Big East Bowl slot.
That being said...I think the ideal scenario is the Champ Sports Bowl. Number one reason is, looking at potential matchups from the ACC, I think we can beat any of those teams. Secondly, it's still a reasonably good bowl game. Third, not winning the conference and missing out on a BCS bowl gives the team something to set it's sights on for next season. If making a bowl was this goal this year, following that up next season becomes equally important. Syracuse followed up a great 10-3 season in 2001 with a 4-8 stinker the next, and we all know what happened after that. Lastly, it's also played in the state of Florida. It's no secret HCDM is looking to re-establish Syracuse recruiting ties down south, and there are none better than those that come out of Florida. In addition, there's still a lot of Syracuse players from Florida who will be ready to go, and you can count on a good showing from Orange fans.
Enough of my deranged logic, what do you think?
Which bowl would you most like to see Syracuse go to?
Fiesta Bowl all the way. F*** Pitt. Why not us? (56 votes)
Champ Sports. Site of our (and coach P's) last bowl game where we were slaughtered by Georgia Tech. Time for Syracuse and HCDM to right that wrong once and for all. (52 votes)
Car Care Bowl. 3rd place aint bad for a team picked to finish in the basment. And a good chance for us to demolish an ACC team. (9 votes)
Pinstripe Bowl. The Bronx aka HCDM's hometown. If that's not enough incentive, its also in Rutgers backyard. In your face, a**holes! (48 votes)
Birmingham Bowl. Hey, maybe HCDM can make it a twofer and steal some of 'bamas recruits while we're down there. Or not. (0 votes)
Liberty Bowl. Not a likely destination for any Big East team...but hey, still a chance we can tee off on some CUSA scrubs. (1 vote)
Beef O'brady's Bowl. F*** everything else. We want da beef!!!! (0 votes)
WTF are you smoking and why are we even discussing this? ANY ol' bowl will do. (7 votes)
