Syracuse Taking It One Day At A Time, Giving 110% And Other Such Things

SU is ranked No. 4 in the nation.  We're coming off a shellacking of our rival, who was also ranked in the top ten at the time.  Folks are bandying about one-seeds and Final Four nods. You know, it's probably a good time to take a step back and remember we've still got a loooooong way to go.

Mike Waters reminds Cuse fans to stay grounded today with his piece on how the players are trying to do the exact same thing.

With its 73-56 victory over Georgetown on Monday, the Syracuse Orange improved to 20-1 for just the third time in Jim Boeheim's 34-year coaching tenure.

That's the good news. Here's the bad.

The other two teams that shot out to 20-1 starts both failed to realize their promise.

Geez, way to bum everybody out, Mike.

He's got a point though.  Along with the '79-'80 team that went 24-2 and lost in the Sweet 16 and the '04-'05 team that started so strong but faded down the stretch, I'm also reminded of the '99-'00 Orange.  SU started the season 19-0 (we had t-shirts!) in my senior year.  Finishing the regular season 24-4, they won the Big East regular season title.  We were going to the Final Four.  There was no doubt in my, or anyone else's mind.  Alas, the team faltered late in the year, losing three of their last five games, including their first game of the BET and in the Sweet 16 against Michigan State.  That was that.

Great, now I'VE bummed everybody out.  It's contagious!

Anyway this isn't a time to be bummed any more than its a time to start booking tickets to Indianapolis...I think that's the point.  Live in the now.  Give 110%.  Believe in God.  You know...it's cliche time!

Star-divide

"We take it a game at a time, " Syracuse sophomore guard Scoop Jardine said. "I don't even know our record in the Big East.

"We still have a lot to work on, " Rautins said.

"Every game, every team is gunning for us because they know that can put them on top, " Syracuse center Arinze Onuaku said. "We gotta just keep taking it one game at a time, like we've been doing."

"When you start the game, it's 0-0, " Onuaku said. "Anybody can be beat, especially in the Big East. It's such a tough conference. You can't worry about the rankings or any of that stuff and just go out there and play."

Tim McGraw was right. Live like you were dying, Cuse Nation.

Yep

When Syracuse plays at MSG or even in Albany/Boston… it is a “home game.”

But MSU can play in Pontiac without so much as a whisper? A state school playing within the state? Not surprisingly, we had some “foul trouble” that game. And so began my hatred for MSU…

Except when they play Michigan

and, of course, the fact that Tom Izzo is really a great guy/coach… based on the local radio interviews anyway.

Why do you hate Michigan?

ANd Tom Izzo is a HUGE douchebag. He does not teach great defense he teaches his players to be thugs and punch others and grab their jerseys when they get beat.

Even in the top 5

we still cling to the underdog, people have been doubting us mantra.

Here is a message to the players: Wes is the only one who would be a starter for Texas, Kansas or UK, and that wouldnt be until mid season.

Chew on that.

Oh God I remember the 19-0

I was at Community College before transferring to Cuse, but I was also working board-op at the local station carrying Syracuse games.

Incidentally, the highest rank we got when 19-0,

#4.

The 'Cuse is in tha house, oh my God oh my God.

We had such a comfotable lead at halftime, that I turned it off and have always assumed we won that game and the next to go to the Final Four…. am I wrong?

That team was really good

Jason Hart, Blackwell, Etan Thomas, If we would have beaten Michigan State, we could have gone all the way.

I actually hope we get them again this year.

What with them being right next to us in the rankings and some people thinking they’re better than us despite that any way you put it we’re by far better.

THere is no way in HELL east lansing community college

Is even close to SU. I watched them play last night and they lucked out against a mediocre Michigan team thanks to some horrible officiating on the last play.

If Syracuse did not beat MSU by 20 points, I would say it was a well-below-expected performance from the Orange.

It's DePaul Week!

I was too lazy to put up a fanpost, so I wrote here. It’s that wonderful time of the year when the lady and I go at it. The stakes aren’t as high this year as they were last year, but it’s always an important game for me.

Is anyone else in this great interweb community venturing out to Rosemont on saturday?

Any requests?

i thought of that

but with a small car and a carpool full, i won’t be able to fit a giant scoop head in there. Unless it rides on top, where it might not survive the expressway.

We need to be careful.

Otherwise we might be seeing DOCTOR Gross on a big head sign.

I forgot what section I’m in, don’t have the ticket handy, but it’s on the 200 level. I got them through the alumni club, and we sold out our blocks, so our group will be over 200 strong.

Were we really 20-1 the Vermont year?

I did not know that. I remember the year we started 19-0 and blew that huge lead against (who else?) east lansing community college in the Sweet Sixteen. I thought that team was even more talented than the 2003 team (we had Shumpert, Deshaun Williams, Tony Bland off the bench, Etan THomas, Hart, Blackwell, Burgan, Griffin starting)

No

We lost to vermont in 04, I believe. One of the worst officiated games I have ever seen.

I think we caught Saddam the same day.
