Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Imagine being, one day, king of the campus here, where literally girls are slipping their phone numbers underneath your door, people are giving you things, inviting you to parties, to...you're picking up and doing toilets after the same kind of college kids that you were actually worshiped by...within three-four years they don't even remember you."

Former Syracuse basketball player Marty Headd and the first SU player to score inside the Carrier Dome, who now works as a janitor. Check out the free video on the SUAtheltics.com homepage about his story.

Moving

I hope to Christ Devo and Paul watch this. I did like that he seems happy at the end, but that has to be a tough pill to swallow some days.

Mike Williams?

At least Devo and Paul finished their seasons. I wish them well. Mid-season quitters? Not so much.

Ain't nothing wrong with being a janitor

We’ve all got to do something. Like my Pop used to say: “If you’ve gotta shovel shit, make sure you’ve got good shoes.”

I'm old enough

to have seen Marty Headd during his playing days. He was a freshman when I saw my first SU game in person (I was 9) at Manley. It’s as cliche’ as it gets, but if they had a three-point line back in those days, Marty woulda had half again as many career points.

I first read about Marty last year in the Daily Orange online. His is a story that’s sad but also kinda cool at the same time because he finally got his degree.

Oh, and in the late 70s/early 80s (pre-NBA-Jordan-era), basketball players with receding hairlines didn’t routinely shave their heads like they do now. Marty was a trendsetter who not only had the shiny dome, but had the greatest last name for a bald guy ever.

Both Headd and his back court teammate Hal Cohen shaved their heads.

They were the “Cohen-heads”.

Great Guy

Marty worked in Flint when I was an RA up there, and we used to talk all the time but it took me about half the year to figure out he used to play basketball. He always preached getting the most out of the SU degree, and I can tell you the pride and perspective he shows in that video is him every day.

Plus to this day he still hates Georgetown, and we all know that will get you far in life.

I was there. Everyone used to chant “Give us Head”. :)

Tremendous pure shooter

Glad he got his degree and seems happy. Wonder what Dr. Cohen thinks.

Nice story

Great video – I really enjoyed that. His quote, “If you can make baskets in the rain, you can make baskets in a gymnasium” has quickly become a favorite quote of mine. I like that attitude.
